Styling that travels badly
Advanced SubStation Alpha (.ass) and its older sibling SubStation Alpha (.ssa) hold far more than text: fonts, colours, outlines, positions, karaoke timing and animation. That richness is why fansubbers use it and also why it travels badly. Upload an .ass to most platforms and it is refused; hand it to a hardware player and the styling is quietly ignored or, worse, drawn wrong.
What the converter reads
Only the [Events] section holds subtitles, and its Format: line names the columns. That order is not fixed between files, so the columns are read from the Format line rather than assumed — a file written by a different tool still converts correctly. Lines beginning Comment: are working notes rather than subtitles and are skipped. Because the text column comes last and may itself contain commas, everything after the final named column is treated as text.
What is kept and what is dropped
Timings are carried across exactly, including the centisecond precision ASS uses. Line breaks written as N become real line breaks. Override tags in braces — {an8} for position, {i1} for italics, colour and font changes — are removed, because SubRip has no way to express any of them. This is a real loss and worth being clear about: signs, typesetting and karaoke effects will not come through. What you get is the dialogue, correctly timed, in a format everything accepts.

What is the difference between .ass and .ssa?
SSA is the older version and ASS is Advanced SubStation Alpha, which added more styling and positioning. Both keep their subtitles in an [Events] section and both are handled here.
Will my styling survive the conversion?
No, and nothing could make it. SubRip has no concept of fonts, colours, outlines or positions, so override tags such as {an8} or {i1} are removed. Typesetting, signs and karaoke effects are lost; the dialogue and its timing are not.
Why is my converted file missing some lines?
Lines that begin with Comment: rather than Dialogue: are notes left by whoever made the file, not subtitles, so they are skipped. Some ASS files also carry effect-only lines with no text, and those are skipped too.
Do line breaks inside a subtitle survive?
Yes. ASS writes a line break as N, and each one becomes a real line break in the SRT cue.
The columns in my file are in an unusual order. Will it still work?
Yes. The Format: line at the top of the [Events] section says which column is which, and that is what the converter reads. It does not assume a fixed layout.
Are the timings changed?
No. ASS times are given to the centisecond and are carried across exactly, written in SubRip's millisecond form.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The whole conversion runs in your browser. The file is never sent to a server, never stored, and no account is needed.
