Converting VTT and SRT in both directions
WebVTT and SubRip are nearly the same format with two different habits. And it is nearly always the other one you need: the web player wants .vtt, the video editor wants .srt, and the platform you are uploading to has its own preference. This tool converts both ways and works out which way on its own.
Drop the file and it looks inside: WebVTT becomes SubRip, SubRip becomes WebVTT. There is no format menu to get wrong. And because everything runs in the browser, the file is never uploaded.
How the two formats differ
The visible difference is in the milliseconds: SubRip separates them with a comma (00:01:23,456), WebVTT with a period (00:01:23.456). A WebVTT file also always opens with the word WEBVTT on the first line and can skip the cue numbering that SubRip conventionally carries.

This is a cue in WebVTT.WebVTT additionally supports on-screen positioning, styling and metadata that SubRip has no concept of. Converting to .srt drops those directives, because the target format has nowhere to put them. What survives intact is what matters in almost every case: the timings and the text.
Which format you need when
WebVTT is the format of web video: it is what the track tag of an HTML5 player expects and what most streaming platforms use. SubRip is the universal format of desktop editors and players — VLC, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut — and the one nearly everyone means when they ask for "the subtitle file".
After converting you can keep working on the file: shift every timecode if it drifts, merge several parts into one track, or pull out just the text. Each of those is a separate free tool in this section.

How do I convert VTT to SRT?

Does it convert SRT to VTT as well?
Yes, in the same place. The tool reads the content of whatever you drop and converts to the other format automatically: give it an .srt and you get a .vtt, and the other way round.
What is the actual difference between VTT and SRT?
The milliseconds: SubRip separates them with a comma, WebVTT with a period. A WebVTT file also starts with the word WEBVTT on the first line and supports positioning and styling, which SubRip does not. On the essentials — timings and text — they are equivalent.
Do I lose anything converting VTT to SRT?
You lose on-screen positioning, styling and metadata, because the SubRip format has nowhere to store them. Timings and text survive intact, and that is all a player or an editor needs.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. It is read and converted inside your browser and the result is generated on your own machine. Nothing is transmitted or stored anywhere.
Which format does a web player need?
