Typing at the speed of talking

Most people speak at 130–150 words a minute and type at 40. Dictation closes that gap for anything you would otherwise type from your head: a first draft, an email, notes after a call, a message too long for thumbs. This page turns your voice into editable text as you speak, with no account and nothing installed.

How it works

The page uses the speech recognition your browser already has — the Web Speech API. In Chrome and Edge that is Google's engine; in Safari on Mac, iPhone and iPad it is Apple's. Audio goes from your microphone to that engine and text comes back; this site never receives the audio and stores nothing. The text stays in the box on this page (a draft is kept in your browser's own storage so a reload does not lose it), and you copy or download it when you are done. Firefox has no speech engine, so it shows a note instead of a microphone.

Getting clean text

• Pick the language before you start — the selector lists 35, and the engine listens for that one.
• Speak in whole sentences; the engine adds punctuation from your pauses and intonation, and it does that better on complete phrases than on single words.
• Say punctuation by name if you want it exactly where you mean it: "comma", "full stop", "new line" work in most languages on Chrome.
• The engine pauses itself after a long silence; the page restarts it, so just keep talking.
• The box is an ordinary text area: click anywhere and fix a word by hand.

Where it stops

Live dictation is for words you are saying now. It cannot transcribe a file, a recording of someone else, or a meeting that already happened, and it needs a network connection in Chrome. For recordings, use the file tools on this site — the first 5 minutes of any audio, free.
