Why a voice message is worth reading instead of hearing
A three-minute voice note holds about 400 words. Listening takes three minutes; reading takes forty seconds, and you can search it, quote it and forward the one sentence that matters. WhatsApp shows a transcript for some messages on some phones, but not for every language, not for forwarded notes, and never for the export sitting in your Files app. This page takes the exported file and gives you the words.
Where the file comes from
WhatsApp stores voice messages as Opus audio in an Ogg container, so the file you export ends in .opus. On Android, long-press the message, choose Share, and save it to Files or send it to your computer; the originals also sit in WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Voice Notes/. On iPhone, long-press the message, tap Forward, then the Share icon, then Save to Files. Either way the file is tiny — a minute of speech is roughly 100–200 KB — so uploading it takes a second.
What happens when you drop it here
Your browser reads the file first. If it is longer than 5 minutes, the browser itself keeps only the first 5 minutes and re-encodes that part as a 16 kHz mono WAV, so the rest never leaves your device. The audio is then sent over an encrypted connection to the same transcription engine that powers the SozAI app, run by AssemblyAI. The language is detected automatically across 99 languages, so a Portuguese note from a cousin and a German one from a colleague both come back in the language they were spoken. When the transcript appears, the audio and the text are deleted at the provider; nothing is kept on this site.
Formats and limits
- Accepted: OPUS/OGG, MP3, M4A, WAV, AAC, FLAC, WEBM, up to 25 MB.
- Preview length: the first 5 minutes of each file.
- Three previews per device per day; no signup, no card.
- On an iPhone, Safari cannot decode Opus itself, so the untrimmed file is sent and cut to 5 minutes on the server instead. Voice notes are small enough that this makes no difference.
When the preview is not enough
A single voice note fits comfortably in 5 minutes. A backlog of forty of them from a group chat, or the twenty-minute monologue a friend sent at midnight, does not. The SozAI app has no time cap: share the note straight from WhatsApp to SozAI on iPhone or Android, and the transcript lands in a searchable library with a summary and, if you need it, a translation. Does this work with the .opus files WhatsApp saves?
Yes. Opus in an Ogg container is exactly what WhatsApp exports, and it is one of the formats the preview accepts directly. You do not need to convert the file to MP3 first.
How do I get the voice message out of WhatsApp?
On Android, long-press the message, tap Share and save it to Files or send it to yourself. On iPhone, long-press, tap Forward, then the Share icon, then Save to Files. The result is a small .opus file you can drop on this page.
Is it free? Do I need an account?

What happens to my voice message?
It is sent over an encrypted connection to the transcription engine, transcribed, and then both the audio and the transcript are deleted there. This site does not store either; the text exists only on your screen until you copy or download it.
Which languages are supported?
The language is detected automatically from the audio itself, across 99 languages — you do not pick it. Mixed-language notes are transcribed in the dominant language of the recording.
The note is longer than 5 minutes. What do I get?
The first 5 minutes as text, with a note saying how long the full recording is. The trimming happens in your browser, so the rest of the audio is never uploaded. For the full note, share it from WhatsApp to the SozAI app.
Why is the transcript missing a few words?
Voice notes are recorded close to the mouth on a phone microphone, often outdoors. Wind, traffic and a hand over the mic all cost words. Notes recorded indoors come back almost verbatim; a note from a windy street may lose a phrase or two.
Can I transcribe many voice messages at once?
The preview takes one file at a time. For a whole chat's worth of notes, the app on iPhone or Android accepts several shared files in one go and keeps every transcript in a searchable library.
