How it works

Flashcard Maker in three steps

01

Type or paste your cards

Term and definition per row — Tab moves to the next cell, Enter adds a card, or paste a whole list at once.

02

Study with spaced repetition

Flip each card and answer Know or Don't know; the Leitner boxes decide when it comes back.

03

Print, export or share

Print 8 cards per sheet double-sided, export a CSV for Anki, or share the deck as a link.

How the flashcard maker works

Each card is one row: the term on the left, the definition on the right. Tab jumps to the next cell, Enter starts a new card and Shift + Enter puts a line break inside a card. A ready list can go in at once: paste lines such as term — definition, term;definition, term: definition or two columns copied from a spreadsheet, and the separator is detected from the lines themselves. A deck holds up to 2,000 cards.

Everything is saved in this browser as you type. There is no account and the cards are not sent anywhere — which also means that clearing the site data in your browser deletes them, so export the decks you want to keep.

How does the spaced repetition here work?

It uses five Leitner boxes: a card you know moves up one box and comes back after 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 days, and a card you miss drops to box 1. The box idea comes from Sebastian Leitner's book So lernt man lernen (1972); the fixed day intervals are our timed version of it, chosen so that two buttons are enough.

Review intervals in this flashcard maker
BoxWhen the card comes backHow a card gets there
Newin the current sessionevery card you add
1after 1 dayfirst "Know", or any "Don't know"
2after 2 days"Know" in box 1
3after 4 days"Know" in box 2
4after 8 days"Know" in box 3
5after 16 days"Know" in box 4 or 5

A missed card also comes back at the end of the same session, and once you get it right it is due again the next day. Days are calendar days on your device, so "tomorrow" means after midnight. For comparison, SuperMemo's SM-2 algorithm, described by Piotr Woźniak in his 1990 thesis Optimization of learning and the basis of Anki's original scheduler, starts at 1 day, then 6 days, then multiplies the interval by an ease factor that begins at 2.5. SM-2 asks you to grade each answer from 0 to 5; Leitner needs only "know" or "don't know", which is why it is used here.

Printing double-sided flashcards

The print view puts 8 cards on a sheet, two columns by four rows, on A4 or US Letter with a 10 mm margin — each card is about 95 × 69 mm on A4 and 98 × 65 mm on Letter. Odd pages carry the terms, even pages the definitions, with the two columns swapped so that each definition lands behind its own term when the sheet turns over its long edge. Print with Two-sided → Flip on long edge and the scale at 100%. Without a duplex printer, choose the single-sided layout instead: 4 cards per page, term and definition side by side, cut and fold.

What is the Anki CSV format?

Anki imports plain-text files with one note per line and the fields separated by a comma, a semicolon or a tab. The CSV from this tool has two fields, Front and Back, separated by commas, in UTF-8. Its first two lines are the headers #separator:Comma and #html:false, which recent Anki versions read to set up the import by themselves. A field is wrapped in double quotes when it contains a comma, a quote or a line break, or when it starts with #; a quote inside a field is written twice.

Sharing a deck

"Share or embed this deck" compresses the cards into the part of the link after the #, which browsers never send to a server. The same link powers an embeddable flashcard player for a class page or a blog. A link holds a few hundred short cards; share a larger deck as a CSV file.

Answers

Flashcard maker — frequently asked questions

Is this flashcard maker really free?

Yes. It runs entirely in your browser and needs no account; a deck can hold up to 2,000 cards. Studying, printing, exporting to Anki and sharing are all free, and nothing is uploaded to our server.

Where are my flashcards saved?

In this browser's local storage, on this device. They survive a reload or a restart, but they do not follow you to another browser or phone, and clearing the site data deletes them. Export a deck as CSV to keep a copy or move it elsewhere.

How do I paste a list of terms and definitions?

Click "Paste a list" and put one card per line, with the term and the definition separated by a dash, a Tab, a semicolon or a colon — the tool detects which one your lines use and shows how many cards it found. Two columns copied from Excel or Google Sheets work too, and so does pasting straight into a card.

How do I import these flashcards into Anki?

Open Export & share, download "CSV for Anki", then in Anki choose File → Import and pick the file. The two columns become the Front and Back fields of a Basic note. Recent Anki versions read the header lines in the file and set the comma separator for you.

How do I print flashcards on both sides?

Open Print, keep the double-sided layout and press Print flashcards. In the print dialog choose Two-sided and Flip on long edge, and keep the scale at 100%. The definition pages are mirrored so each one lands behind its term. Test with one sheet first if your printer feeds paper back manually.

What spaced repetition system does it use?

Five Leitner boxes. A card you know moves up a box and returns after 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 days; a card you miss goes back to box 1, comes back later in the same session and again the next day. When nothing is due, you can still practise all cards without changing the schedule.

Can I put a deck on my website or share it with a class?

Yes. "Share or embed this deck" gives you a link and an iframe code. The cards are compressed into the link itself, so no account or upload is needed, and the embedded player lets students flip through the cards and shuffle them. Anyone with the link can see the cards.

Can it make flashcards for me from a video or my notes?

That is the AI flashcard generator next door: give it a YouTube link, a PDF, a recording or pasted notes and it writes the cards, which then open in this same editor for checking, studying and printing.
