Free AI tool

AI Flashcard Generator

Get 10, 20 or 30 flashcards from a YouTube link, a PDF, a recording or your notes, in the language of the source.

  • Free, no signup
  • Made by AI from your source
  • Kept in this browser

Works with videos that have captions. Long videos are condensed evenly, from start to end.

Cards

Cards are generated by AI and can contain mistakes — check them before an exam. The text of your source is sent to the AI model only to write the cards.

How it works

AI Flashcard Generator in three steps

01

Pick a source

Paste a YouTube link or your notes, or choose a PDF or a recording.

02

Generate 10, 20 or 30 cards

Free AI writes the cards in the language of the source, usually in under a minute.

03

Check, study and export

Fix or flag any card, then study with spaced repetition, print or export to Anki.

Four sources, one deck

The generator needs text, and it can get that text four ways. A YouTube link is read through the same pipeline as our YouTube transcript tool, so it works for videos with captions. A PDF is opened in your browser with Mozilla's pdf.js: only its text is extracted, and only that text is sent to make the cards — the file itself is never uploaded. Scanned PDFs without a text layer cannot be read this way. Pasted text — notes, a chapter, an article — goes in as it is. An audio or video file is transcribed for its first 5 minutes, and the upload is deleted after processing.

A source needs at least 200 characters and is used up to 60,000 characters. You choose 10, 20 or 30 cards. The cards are written in the language of the source, so a lecture in Spanish gives Spanish cards.

What the AI is asked to do

Each card tests one fact, term, definition, cause or step from the material, with a question or term on the front and a specific answer on the back. The model is told to use only what the material says, to cover it from beginning to end rather than just the opening, to skip greetings and sponsor reads in video transcripts, and never to repeat a question. Every reply is checked on our server before you see it: empty and duplicate cards are dropped and over-long text is cut.

The cards are made by free open models through OpenRouter. The site switches the generator off by itself if a request ever costs money. That is also why there is a daily limit — 10 generations a day on one device, shared with the quiz generator — and a quick human check from time to time.

Can AI flashcards be trusted?

Not blindly. A model can misread a sentence, merge two ideas or state something the source only implied, and free models make such mistakes more often than paid ones. Read the deck once before you study for an exam. Wrong cards can be flagged with one click and fixed right in the editor; the flag stays on the card so you can find it again.

After the cards are made

The deck opens in the same editor as our flashcard maker. Change any card, add your own, then study with spaced repetition — five Leitner boxes, with reviews after 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 days — print the deck 8 cards per sheet double-sided, or export a CSV that Anki imports directly. The deck is stored in this browser only, with no account; export it to keep a copy.

For whole lectures rather than the first minutes of a recording, the SozAI app records and transcribes any length and builds flashcards and quizzes from your own recordings.

Answers

AI flashcard generator — frequently asked questions

Is the AI flashcard generator free?

Yes, with no signup. It runs on free AI models, so it costs nothing to use; to keep it that way there is a limit of 10 generations a day on one device, shared with the quiz generator. Editing, studying, printing and exporting the cards are unlimited.

Can I make flashcards from a YouTube video?

Yes. Paste the link and the generator reads the video's transcript, then writes the cards from it. It works for videos that have captions on YouTube. If a video has none, upload its audio instead and the first 5 minutes are transcribed.

How do I turn a PDF into flashcards?

Choose the PDF tab and pick the file. Your browser reads the text out of it with pdf.js and shows how many pages and characters it found; only that text is sent to make the cards, not the file. Scanned PDFs have no text layer, so copy their text into the Text tab instead.

In which language will the cards be?

In the language of the source. Notes in German give German cards and a Japanese lecture gives Japanese ones; the page language does not change that.

Are the AI-generated flashcards accurate?

Usually, but not always. The model is told to use only what the source says, yet it can still misread or oversimplify. Check the deck before an exam, fix wrong cards in the editor and flag them so you can find them later.

Where are my generated decks stored?

In this browser on this device, next to the decks you make by hand in the flashcard maker. We do not keep them in an account. Export a deck as CSV or TXT to keep it or move it to Anki or Quizlet.

How many flashcards can it make at once?

10, 20 or 30 per run, from up to 60,000 characters of text. For a long source, make one deck per chapter or part, or add your own cards to the generated deck.

Can I export the cards to Anki or print them?

Yes. The result opens in the flashcard editor, where Export gives you a CSV for Anki and a tab-separated TXT, and Print lays out 8 cards per sheet for double-sided printing.

Study from your own lectures
