book of life was thrown into the lake of fire. This is hell. Probably not what you envision it to look like because most people believe hell is just one place, one giant room filled with fire where everyone who doesn't believe in God is

sent. That's it. One door, one destination. But the Bible describes hell as a place with different chambers, different residents, different compartments. And some of these compartments are occupied right now, and some are empty, waiting to be filled at

a later time. So, by the end of this video, we will take a complete tour through this entire map from top to bottom, every chamber, every name, and we're going to fill in this entire chart so that you actually understand what the

Bible says happens after a person dies. But most importantly, I've got a challenge for everyone at the end of this video that may make you uncomfortable. Let's jump in.

All right. So, before we dig into this complex map, there is one key that unlocks everything regarding hell. When you open up your English Bible, it's easy to assume the word hell is always pointing to the same general place. But

it's not because our English translators took several Hebrew and Greek words and translated all of them as hell in our English Bibles. But there are actually six of them and we're going to visit each one on our tour. Sheol,

Hades, Tartarus, the abyss, Gehenna, and finally the lake of fire. Six words and they are not all the same place. Now, if that's not confusing enough, the next key that makes this entire map make sense is that the

Bible's afterlife is divided up along two different lines or axes. The first is space, meaning there are different rooms, different space, different chambers, different locations. But the second axis is time. There is a temporary holding place that exists

before the final judgment and there is a permanent destination that exists after the final judgment. The best way to picture this if I'm being honest is to think of our justice system. So when someone is arrested, they don't just go

straight to prison first. They go to jail and they sit there and they wait.

What are they waiting for? They're waiting for their trial. And so jail is temporary. It's the temporary holding place before the verdict. But after the trial, after the sentence comes down, they get transferred to where? Prison.

And it's in prison where they will serve the actual sentence. So to be clear, jail is the waiting room. Prison is the destination. I want you to keep that picture in mind because the Bible describes hell the exact same way. There

is a jail and there is a prison. All right. Now, finally, I'm not going to spend much time in this video discussing what hell feels like in terms of the suffering, the regret, the pain, the torment, the conscious experience

the corner and a link in the description so you can watch that video after you've watched this one. All right, let's jump in. Okay, so the first stop on our tour is the upper level of this map. And

we'll call this the waiting place. And this is where those first two words come in. So in the Old Testament, which was written in Hebrew primarily, a little bit of Aramaic, the word for this place is Sheol. And this basically refers to the

place of the dead, place of the grave, if you will, where everybody goes whenever they die. So in the New Testament which was written in Greek, the word is Hades. Same place, two different languages. And here's the most

important thing I can tell you. This place is temporary. It is not the lake of fire. It is not the final destination. It is the holding place of the dead before the final judgment. It is the jail, not the prison. And Jesus

basically pulls back the curtain on this place in Luke 16 in the story that I mentioned a moment ago. The story of the rich man and the beggar named Lazarus. Now watch how Jesus describes what happens the moment both

of these men die. It says here the poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. And in Hades being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and

saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. So here we see our first word, Hades. And what I want you to see on this map is that inside this one waiting place, there are clearly two sides. Once

again, one place, two sides, two chambers. On one side, you have Lazarus, the beggar, resting and experiencing comfort at Abraham's side or Abraham's bosom. In other places, the Bible calls this side paradise. We'll get to that in just a moment. Now, on the other side,

you have the rich man who is conscious, awake, but suffering in torment. Now, by the way, he didn't go there because he was rich. He went there because he rejected Christ. Two men, same realm, completely opposite experiences. One is

in comfort, the other is in agony. And separating these two chambers is something the rich man discovered he cannot get around. Listen to how Abraham describes it. And besides, because the rich man was like, "Hey, how can I get

to where y'all at? Y'all look like you're having a party. Let me, let me, let me join you." Well, Abraham says, "And besides, there is a great chasm separating us. No one can cross over to you from here and no one can cross over

to us from there. A great chasm." And notice that one word fixed. It's locked in place. There is no crossing over.

There's no transfer between the comfort side and the torment side. Once you're on your side, that is where you stay.

The gulf is permanent. So already on this first stop, you can see that hell is not one room. It's a realm with at least two very different chambers divided by a gulf nobody can cross. Now I want to show you two things about this

waiting place that most people have never connected. And the first one is hanging on three crosses. Notice that when Jesus was crucified, he was crucified between two criminals, two thieves. And as they were dying, one of those thieves mocked him. But the other

turned to Jesus in faith and asked to be remembered. And look what Jesus said to that believing thief. And Jesus replied, "I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise." Notice that. Today, not someday. Not after a thousand years, not

at some point in the future. No. Today that believing thief would be with Jesus in paradise, the comfort side of our map. Now the other thief, the one who rejected him, he went to the other side to torment. Two men dying just a few feet

apart from each other on the same hill on the same afternoon and they went to two completely different chambers. And that's why those three crosses are on your map. They're a live snapshot of the two sides of Hades. Now, here's the

second thing, and this is where it gets really good. I told you that one of these chambers is standing empty right now.

It's the paradise side. And here's why. When Jesus died and rose again, something changed for the believer.

Today, you do not go down to a waiting chamber to sit and wait. No. The moment a Christian dies, watch what happens. 2 Corinthians 5:8. Yes, we are fully confident and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies for then we

will be at home with the Lord. Some verses say to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. And so this isn't the idea that we're going to be at Abraham's side or bosom. So the idea

behind this is that even if you died a saint in the Old Testament...

deferred. Kind of like credit card debt is pushed down and deferred. So you couldn't go into the presence of a holy God because your sins had not been paid for. You also weren't going to go into torment because you were a saint. So you

went to this place called Abraham's side, Abraham's bosom, or paradise if you will, right? But when Jesus paid the full price for sin, those who were in paradise were transferred to heaven to be present with Christ. That's why the

paradise chamber on your map is now stamped empty. Now, now I understand this is debatable, so I'm not going to spend much time here. Let's go down to the next level.

Now, this next stop takes a turn because these next two compartments on our map don't hold human beings at all. As a matter of fact, they hold spirits.

Specifically, they hold fallen angels and demons. These are, think of these like spirit prisons, if you will. Now, the first is described in 2 Peter 2:4.

Notice it says, "For God did not spare even the angels who sinned. He threw them into hell in gloomy pits of darkness where they are being held until the day of judgment." So once again, we have that same general word in our

English Bible, hell. But in the Greek, Peter uses a completely different word here. He doesn't use Hades. He doesn't use gehenna. He uses a word that is only used once in the entire Bible. It's the Greek word tarterus.

This is the only time it appears in the entire Bible. So when you think of Tartarus, think of this like a maximum security cell for a specific group of fallen angels. It's reserved for angels who committed some sin that was so

egregious that Peter says these fallen angels are bound. They are chained. They are locked down. Held in gloomy darkness. Held there until the final day of judgment. Basically, they did something so horrible, so heinous that God was like, "I'm not even going to let

y'all be free so y'all can wreak havoc on mankind." No, y'all going to be locked up. Think of Tarterus as solitary confinement.

Think of it as the deepest cell in the building and it's reserved for the worst offenders and there is no parole. Right?

I'm trying to use terms that we all understand. There's there's no hope at any time to get free. These fallen angels are serving a life sentence in spirit prison with no door that opens, waiting only for sentencing. Now the

question is how did they get there and what did they do? Well, many scholars, myself included, believe that this is the group of angels who procreated with human women in Genesis 6 and produced an offspring of giants called the Nephilim. Now, once

to the second spirit prison right next to it on the map. And this one is called the abyss or in some translations the bottomless pit. And this is a different kind of place. Watch. Because this one has a door that opens and closes. You

might recall when Jesus confronted a man filled with a legion of demons. Here's what those demons begged him for. It says the demons kept begging Jesus not to send them into the bottomless pit.

That was always funny to me. They they knew that Jesus had the power to like to shut him down and and to to to you know send them somewhere. They were like Jesus just whatever you do don't send us

to the abyss. Don't send us to the bottomless pit. Send send us somewhere else. So that phrase bottomless pit is translated as the Greek word abbyos, the abyss. And notice the demons are terrified of it. They are begging Jesus,

don't send us here. So the abyss is a real holding place for demonic spirits.

And we see this again in the book of Revelation chapter 9 during the time of the tribulation period. And God is going to take the top off of this bottomless pit. God forbid. Woo. God bless people who are going to be alive uh during this

time on earth. I'm a preerttrib rapture guy. So, you know, I respect those who who see things differently. Once again, we don't need to argue on that. But in my uh theological uh and escological view, I won't be present to experience

this. But God is going to take the top off of this bottomless pit filled with demons. And I interpret this as these demons are going to take the form of locusts to torment those alive during the tribulation. Notice it says here,

"Then the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen to earth from the sky, and he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit.

key to the bottomless pit. There's that word again. And a heavy chain in his hand. He seized the dragon, that old serpent, who is the devil, Satan, and bound him in chains for a thousand years. The angel threw him into the

bottomless pit. There's that word again. Which he then shut and locked so Satan could not deceive the nations anymore until the thousand years were finished.

Afterward, he must be released for a little while. So, as you can see, this abyss involves quite a bit of activity throughout the New Testament, but it's different than Tarteus, which is the sealed vault. This is a working prison.

It has a key. It has a door that gets shut and locked and then later opened again. Things come out of it and things get put into it. Now, let's get down to the turning point of this whole map.

Everything we've tooured so far, the waiting place, the two chambers, the spirit prisons, all of it is temporary.

Think of all of that like jail. Remember, everybody there is waiting. And now we arrive at the moment.

Everyone's been waiting for the trial. The moment the entire temporary system, the temporary system shuts down and everyone is moved to their permanent place.

The Bible calls this the great white throne judgment. Watch the scene unfold. And I saw a great white throne and the one sitting on it. The earth and sky fled from his presence, but they found no place to

hide. I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God's throne. And the books were opened, including the book of life. And the dead were judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books. So you see,

imagine this. This is the courtroom. This is the trial that everyone in the waiting place has been waiting for. And notice something. It says books were opened, including the book of life.

Underline that phrase in your mind, the book of life, because we're going to come back to it because it turns out to be the most important book in the universe. Hold that thought because right after the trial, look at what

happens to the entire waiting system. Now, watch closely because this is the hinge of the entire map. It says here, "And the sea gave up the dead who were in it. Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged,

each one of them, according to what they had done." Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. So notice what's happening here. Hades, our temporary waiting place.

The upper level of our map gets emptied out and transferred into the final destination called the lake of fire. The waiting room is shut down. The jail is closed and everyone who is being held there is now being transferred to their

final permanent destination. This is exactly why I keep saying Hades is temporary. It has an expiration date.

There is a day coming when the holding place itself is decommissioned in everyone and it is moved out. And now we have to answer the question that decides everything.

We just saw that everyone is judged according to what they had done. And we saw that mysterious book of life gets opened. So the question becomes, what determines which side of this map you end up on forever?

I'm going to answer that question. But first, let me take you to the very bottom of the map, to the final place, because you need to see it before you feel the weight of that answer.

This is the bottom of the map, the permanent place, the prison, not the jail. And the Bible gives it more than one name.

The first name is one that Jesus himself used more than anyone. It's the word gehenna. And this word has a real physical history.

Gehenna comes from the valley of Henim, a real valley just outside Jerusalem. And here is what happened there. I want you to listen to what the prophet Jeremiah said and how he describes it in the Old Testament. It says, "They have

built pagan shrines at Toph, the garbage dump in the valley of Benhenum. And there they burn their sons and daughters in the fire." "I have never commanded such a horrible deed. It never even crossed my mind," God said, to

command such a thing. That's what made this valley of Hinnimus because the people of Israel went to this place to burn their own children alive in the fire as sacrifices to a false god named Molech. And it became

the most cursed, horrifying piece of ground the Jewish people could imagine. A place defined by fire and burning and death. So when Jesus wanted a word to describe the final place of judgment, he reached for the name of that valley. He

said in effect, you know that place of fire outside the city where the unthinkable happened. He said, yet that's the picture of what hell is going to be like. The final resting place. Shouldn't call it a resting place. The final destination.

And listen to how Jesus describes this place. He says, "And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out. It is better to enter the kingdom of God with only one eye than to have two eyes and be

thrown into hell where the maggots never die and the fire never goes out." Again we have that word hell but this time the word hell is gehenna which we understand to be the lake of fire. A place where

the fire never goes out permanent. No waiting here. No transfer out. No parole. The Bible teaches this is a place of conscious torment and it is forever. As a matter of fact, Revelation says they will be tormented day and

night forever and ever. And my brothers and sisters, I know some of you watching this, you want me to soften it. You want me to not talk about it, but I'm sorry.

Notice who Jesus describes this place was created for. It says here, "Then the king will turn to those on the left and say, "Away with you, you cursed ones, into the eternal fire, prepared for people who do wrong things. Prepared for

bad people. Prepared for people who reject Jesus." No. Prepared for the devil and his demons. Notice that this place was prepared specifically for Satan and his demons. It was never meant for human beings. Hell was never God's plan for you. It was prepared for Satan

your name in the book. Jesus clearly instructed us how you get there. He says, "For this is how God loved the world. [music] He gave his one and only son so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have [music] eternal
