A wrecker crew recovers a stuck Subaru on Grafton Mesa Trail after a broken belt and tensioner, then spots a Subaru out of a ledge and deals with a tow gone wrong.
Key Takeaways
- Routine maintenance like checking belts and tensioners matters, since a neglected noise can strand a recovery truck.
- Careful throttle control, momentum and steering inputs are essential for getting low-clearance vehicles over ledges.
- Recovery equipment has load ratings that must be respected, and recovering heavy or damaged vehicles can be difficult.
- Teamwork, spotting and clear communication between drivers and recovery crews greatly improve outcomes.
What the video covers
- The wrecker truck breaks its serpentine belt and tensioner en route to a stuck Subaru on the Grafton Mesa Trail.
- Uncle Wade, newly relocated from Oregon, joins the crew to repair the belt, which also drives steering, brakes and the water pump.
- The crew drives to the stuck vehicle near an old ghost town, noting the trail where they previously rescued a Prius.
- A spotting operation is planned to guide the Subaru back over a ledge without articulation, with the wrecker standing by in case of a hang-up.
- The driver of the Subaru navigates obstacles with coaching on steering, throttle control and momentum, lifting wheels and clearing rocks.
- Discussion touches on modern car complexity, drive-by-wire throttles and traction control settings that complicate off-road recovery.
- A later call brings a new vehicle with a snapped CV axle, requiring the wrecker to be turned around and the car dragged out.
- A winch-and-plow attempt struggles, with the team noting the load rating limits and the pull pal's poor previous performance in mud.
- The video ends with the recovered vehicle being brought to the yard, with the crew joking that it may be totaled.

I can't believe we got this stuck. Yep, there it is. So, things aren't looking too good here.
Speaker A
So, we got a call for I believe it's a Subaru. It was way down at the end of the Grafton Mesa Trail. I believe this is the same trail where I saved a Prius years ago. I'm going to have to see once
Speaker A
we get on it. Oh, what about the keys? Somebody have the keys to the truck?
Speaker A
No. No. Dang it. Well, we got to go back and get the keys on our roll back. They're not in Hurricane. They're in the roll back.
Speaker A
[music] All right, we're back where we were. Where were we? Grab the keys. We got them. So anyway, we got a few miles down here and then we're going to be turning left overlooking grass, an old golf ghost town down there.
Speaker A
It is a beautiful 70°. It's probably going to get a little warmer today. And I'm currently the middleman today.
Speaker A
How far down this road are they? 2 miles. They're They're all the way at the end of this and then beyond. and then beyond.
Speaker A
What? What was that? That's that noise we were hearing. We lost the tensioner. Okay, get the wrench out. Call Wade. A lot of you guys don't know this, but you're seeing Uncle Wade a lot more. He's my uncle. He just
Speaker A
moved from from Oregon back here. Started working for us. Oh, here. Let me get that.
Speaker A
It'll just rest there. There's the problem. Can I see the bull m? All right. So, we've been This has been making noise for a while. I should have addressed it. I was just hoping the noise would go away.
Speaker A
He He in fact turned up the radio and just kept driving. So now we're paying the piper, so to speak.
Speaker A
Mom and Uncle Wade are coming out. We've got one coming. So I'm going to take this one off. If we can get this off of here, then I can uh send a picture of it.
Speaker A
I'd love to help you, but there's only room for one person in there. It's not even hot in here. Everything's kind of 140°.
Speaker A
The scary part was I saw him starting like starting to reach for stuff and I was in his way cuz I'm in the middle seat. So then I started reaching for stuff. That's exciting. Look at that tree we were going for. At least we
Speaker A
found this out before we went up to your smash and dash. No, that's why we're even taking this.
Speaker A
We would just normally take the banana or the morva, but they are on their way up to the smash and dash. So, the wrecker was the only thing left to having a moment.
Speaker A
[laughter] She's been having a lot of moments lately. That's ruined. Okay. Yeah, that's ruined. So, we could drive like, you know, drive a little ways and let it cool down and drive and that might make things go faster except for it'll make
Speaker A
when we do get the parts um everything will be hotter. We have quite a bit of like cooling capacity, over capacity, but without the pump turning it, things are going to get hot pretty quick and it's not worth it. Not worth it. But I
Speaker A
I'd be lying to say I didn't think about it. Guys found a good spot.
Speaker A
Yeah, they should be getting here pretty soon. I just talked to them. Is that them?
Speaker A
We are so excited to see you. Oh, that's what they're supposed to look like.
Speaker A
Yeah, they're probably hard to tell on camera, but the pulley's gone on this one.
Speaker A
I don't even know how plastic pulleys work. Are you hot rodding? Is that why it broke?
Speaker A
No. million miles. Well, this should be pretty easy. Good. Good stuff. That took away your brakes and everything.
Speaker A
Yep. This belt runs steering and brakes. Oh, man. It's important. [clears throat] That's an important piece of the And it also puzzle there.
Speaker A
It also keeps the water pump moving to keep the engine cool. It was very exciting.
Speaker A
Yeah, sounds like it. Thank you. You're welcome. She's so sweet. You get a hug later.
Speaker A
That does sound good. [laughter] I'm going to give him his tools back. That's going to mean a lot more to him than a hug. All right, they're going to come with us. They're going to test out our seats.
Speaker A
We have this new divider to keep you guys with your bike. Oh, that's going to stay on back there.
Speaker A
I think we will. All right, onward we go. How's the ride so far? It's good.
Speaker A
A little bumpy sometimes. I think we forget that there's people on back, but it's okay. We're doing good.
Speaker A
[music] [music] [music] Getting PTSD? Yes. I spent about 4 hours one one day on this little stretch of road stacking rocks for a Prius. That little car is so helpful. And they're so heavy. They got such tiny tires. The Prius I picked up
Speaker A
right here. So, I wonder how stuck they are. Do they They didn't send any pictures.
Speaker A
No, they didn't have any. They just said that they couldn't make it back up any ledges.
Speaker A
Here we are on the edge ledge. Wow. Look at that view. So pretty. Oh, there they are.
Speaker A
Oh, they're facing the right way. They tried to get out. Oh, Kaitlin, we're going to spot you out of here.
Speaker A
Oh my goodness. This is going to be the best day of wheeling ever in that.
Speaker A
How was your ride? This is a pretty comfy ride. You enjoyed it? Yeah, a lot.
Speaker A
And the scenery was just beautiful. All right, so my preliminary plan right now is spotting Caitlyn out of here.
Speaker A
I love that idea. Colin's going to go ahead of us in the wreck in case we get hung up. Let's have a look at this thing and see what kind of ground clearances we have.
Speaker A
I I was talking about the ghost town. So there you see the old schoolhouse there. Yeah. There's a couple structures there that they've rebuilt.
Speaker A
Yep. The old ghost town of Grafton. The cool old cemetery right up there. I know. I've never been here.
Speaker A
You've been close to here. Places that I've never been. I just got to So, do you think they tried, got stuck, and then backed up here?
Speaker A
You think they tried? They must have. That must be the ledge they're talking about.
Speaker A
So, one thing we've got to be careful with this car is to get cuz it's not going to have articulation. So, we're going to need to keep as much weight on all four tires as possible. Um, compared to a Prius, this is a monster truck. So,
Speaker A
I think this is going to go really well. Okay, go ahead and put it in drive and let's see what happens.
Speaker A
Okay, it's going to happen. Well, that went really well right there. You know, after that, I'm actually not too worried. I think it's going to go well. All right, Caitlyn is just shredding this.
Speaker A
I mean, the car is going. I put it in manual mode and so it should be like in lowest gear and it's not giving me any issues.
Speaker A
Right now, my dad and Caitlyn are on a mission cuz I hopped in the wrecker and I can't find them. I haven't seen them for the last 2 minutes. Holy smokes.
Speaker A
They are just flying out of here. All right, this is going to sound wrong to you, but you're coming off this way on the tree side.
Speaker A
Okay, now come this way. Now come back. Nice work. You only lifted a wheel.
Speaker A
Nice. Okay. Come straight off. Come this way. Yeah. Hold your wheel right there and just come off.
Speaker A
Okay. Just drive out here. We're going to let the wrecker pass. That little car can do a lot of freewheeling.
Speaker A
Yeah. Don't get too far ahead of us. Slow down. Slow down. Nice and easy.
Speaker A
Okay. Hey, when that happens, just back up and use a tiny bit of momentum. Don't steer your wheel.
Speaker A
That did it. This is awesome. All right, this right here, this is going to be the real obstacle. You're going to want to swing wide here.
Speaker A
Back up just a little bit. Don't fall off that rock. And then bump it.
Speaker A
Okay. Back it up. Bump it 100%. Everything it's got. And then stop as soon as that tire pops up.
Speaker A
Okay. Back up a little further. Back it up. Back it up. You got to Okay, right there. Maybe a little further back.
Speaker A
Okay, just fold to the floor till that front tire pops up. That did it.
Speaker A
What's What setting is it? Oh, let's try this. Deep snow and mud. That'll turn off my traction control, looks like.
Speaker A
Okay, so you're going to need to steer this way. So, back up. Just uh Yeah, try that. Just try going forward.
Speaker A
Turn that way. Sharp. Sharp. Sharp. Oh my goodness. You almost hit that rock. You were You were so close. Hang on. Turn the wheel straight. Look at the steering wheel and get it straight and just drive straight to me.
Speaker A
Full throttle. Back it up. Full throttle. Come straight to me. See if you can get that tire to the ground a little bit more.
Speaker A
Okay, come this way. Okay, come straight forward fast as you can. We just needed to find the line. All right, I'm getting in.
Speaker A
It's kind of cool to watch that wrecker move through stuff. You need to go a little faster.
Speaker A
Yeah, I thought Colin said he wanted to get to lunch. All right, so there's some of you that are saying, "Oh, they could have drove that out." I would be willing to say that a high percentage of the people
Speaker A
watching this video couldn't drive this car out of this trail. We've got a couple of secret weapons here. We've got Caitlyn, a closedc course race car driver. She does professional rock crawling as one of her main things. And
Speaker A
she wins a lot. How many times have you podiumed? Oh, since I was 13.
Speaker A
About every time. Every time she goes out. So, no, this road is not as easy as it looks through your television. And I know that there's a few of you that are thinking I could drive that out. And
Speaker A
you're right, but the rest of you are wrong. [laughter] What do you think, Jamie? True story.
Speaker A
So Jamie could drive it out of here. But the other secret weapon is having someone outside to help spot you.
Speaker A
Yeah. And give encouragement like step on the gas all the way. Does that help?
Speaker A
Yeah, it does. Okay. Jamie, could you drive this car out if you're up here all by yourself and you had to get out?
Speaker A
Yes, I think you could. I think I could. I think she could, too. Jamie's actually an excellent driver. She's a little on the cautious side, opposite of Caitlyn.
Speaker A
Caitlyn's a little on the not cautious side, but Jamie is an excellent accomplished driver. So, we do get a lot of comments about like, man, what did Jamie do when she saw this video? Like, if I've done doing something really
Speaker A
scary, Jamie, what do you do when you find out I did something really scary?
Speaker A
Well, one advantage is I know he made it home before I see the video.
Speaker A
So, that helps. So, that helps a lot. Jamie's the first to usually hear about all the stories and everything. She gets the the breakdown the night of.
Speaker A
Yep. She calls me and she's like, "Why are why are you hung so late?" And I'm like, "No, it was a big one." [laughter] And then when I do actually see what they did, I just shake my head and
Speaker A
whatever. I just trust him to do what he's doing. It's what I do. Okay. So, going back to driving this out, one thing maybe not everybody has experience with is these new modern cars. And when I say modern
Speaker A
car, I'm meaning anything after like 1975. But they especially especially modern cars, they have a computer that overrides your inputs if they don't think you know what you're talking about. So that's what this one's doing.
Speaker A
It's just cutting fuel. Yeah. When you need just a little bit of just to just pop it over that rock, it's like you don't know what you want. I know what you want and you want nothing. So that's what I'm going to give you.
Speaker A
That's what the computer's saying. It probably says it in ones and zeros though. Well, and it makes me think about all of like the hardcore rock crawling vehicles. All of them are older than 2005.
Speaker A
Yeah. Like they before all the computers when you have full control over how much throttle and that's that's one of the problems with the Broncos is you can't step on the gas and the brake at the same time.
Speaker A
So you can't power brake and preload everything and then let off the brake. So, in really extreme rock crawling, you're controlling your speed with your brake. You're holding your your gas pedal constant.
Speaker A
Two foot in it. Yep. You're driving with both pedals the whole time. If you have a computer that's like, I'm not going to fuel if you're on the brake. That's a problem.
Speaker A
Like that. That's really hard to get out of situations. It could be life or death.
Speaker A
You get down to it. That's right, Caitlyn. Whoa. Woo. Oh, that was scary. So, this window only rolls up a little bit at a time. I can roll it down by just pushing that, but if I go up, it stops right there.
Speaker A
Then I go again, it stops right there. Can you hold it? No. If I hold it, nothing happens. So, there's some nanny in the door there.
Speaker A
Computer override. That's like I mean, I'm sure there's a setting on the car, but it seems like a guy could roll his window and up and down at will. Like if you don't have special settings for your window roller, you could probably get
Speaker A
by, right? Wouldn't you think? I don't know. I think cars I mean, this is this is my get off my lawn moment, but I think cars are unreasonably and unnecessarily complex. I don't think they need to be this complex. I just
Speaker A
don't think they need to be. I mean, I don't know who's driving all the gimmicks in the cars. Like a window that rolls up one inch at a time. That is bizarre.
Speaker A
Let people drive cars again. Should make that like a slogan. Make cars drivable again.
Speaker A
That would be great. And one thing that's really bad about it is the guys and gals that can actually drive. They can wheel a vehicle. They can make it do what they want it to do even when everybody else can't make it do that.
Speaker A
When you put them in cars like this, we're extra handicapped because we don't trust the car to do what we need it to do. We trust ourselves to make the car do what we want it to do. And now you
Speaker A
have to trust the car, which goes against how I'm wired. I don't trust I don't trust them.
Speaker A
Jamie, what do you think? Yes, you've had that problem to you guys blabber up there.
Speaker A
What about your Jeep though in the sand? If you step on the gas, let off the gas, and then step on the gas again, the gas doesn't work.
Speaker A
Oh no. It just doesn't work. No. I think we did it. I think we are going to get lunch today and only an hour and a half late. Oh, we have got a lot of comments. We did a job
Speaker A
where there was an active fire and we rescued this fire engine. We were digging through some red bushes. It's actually called scrub oak. And what was the comments we got?
Speaker A
People were really worried about us. Poison oak. I don't know how we got a hundred comments. Like a lot of people are like, "Oh, no, that's poison oak, Matt." Yeah, we don't. We're hundreds of miles from the nearest poison oak or
Speaker A
poison ivy. And I know this sounds crazy to some people, but I'm not allergic to poison oak. We've been all over Ed's gold mine. And we got poison oak all over us. And I don't don't react to it.
Speaker A
My kids don't react to it. Lizzy didn't react to it. TomTom did react to it. And Jake reacted to it. Both of them got got it and kind of got sick from it. Here's the thing. Not everybody is allergic to
Speaker A
poison oak, but those that are, it could be life-threatening. So, it's a pretty serious thing and you need to be careful. But here where we're at, h we don't even think about poison.
Speaker A
Jamie, we made it. Good driving, Caitlyn. That was good. Thank you. Okay, just head on out of here. We'll follow you. All right, we're back to normal.
Speaker A
Out we go. We're going that way. Okay, let's load him up. All right, we'll follow you to lunch.
Speaker A
Okay, you hear that, boys and girls? We're going to lunch. I just realized we can't go to lunch till after we drop the car off. So, we're going to go drop the car off and then we're going to lunch.
Speaker A
I'd pull right up in the middle under the shade. Pull up in there. Yeah, but we got it.
Speaker A
So, did you guys walk out or did someone come grab you? Once we realized like we couldn't go any further, um, and it was getting dark, we ended up calling 911.
Speaker A
Okay. We could send out an off-road towe or we could come and get you guys.
Speaker A
Yeah. So, we opted for the off-road towe. The company they sent out made it halfway down and decided it was too unsafe, turned around and left us.
Speaker A
So, the deputy called back, they came, grabbed us, and brought us back. Oh my goodness. That sounds like quite the night.
Speaker A
So, how do you get a hold of us? One of the deputies gave us you guys.
Speaker A
Oh, nice. That's like a They would suggest using you guys. Yeah. Wow. Awesome. Well, we got it.
Speaker A
Well, you get a shirt out of the deal. Well, thank you guys. So, thank you for calling us. That shirt.
Speaker A
It's time for you to start making plans for Matt's Off-Road Games 2027, March 18th or 20th. You are not going to want to miss it. We're gonna be doing some of this and this and that.
Speaker A
And we're bringing back the rad drags [snorts] this time with a little bit of safety.
Speaker A
Tickets go on sale October 30th. Make sure to bring your friends and family. We'll see you there.
Speaker A
We didn't film any of it. You're going to have to believe us. We did go to lunch. We went to Dairy Queen because that's what they voted for. But while we were there, another call came in. So, we're going to head out there and get it
Speaker A
while the rest of the crew loads trailers and heads up to the smash and dash. So, we're just kind of mopping up here at the very tail end before we have to leave. Oh, but now I've got to do the
Speaker A
thing. So, we got a call for a vehicle that has tumbled and fallen and fallen apart. I think it's broken both back wheels. They're actually sending me pictures right now. So, we're going to head up there, scoop it up, get it back
Speaker A
to their trailer or at least to the staging area. Anyway, we'll get it out.
Speaker A
What are you laughing at? We don't know what it is or where we're going.
Speaker A
Oh, yeah. Uh, the G. Okay, let me tell you. Let me try. Let me try. I'm going to try one more time. So, we got a call for a rig that is broke down on the bobsled trail out here to San Hollow. It
Speaker A
took a tumble, broke both back wheels, and uh we need to go scoop it up and get it back to safety. Is that better?
Speaker A
That was better. Well, today you got a two for one, even though one of them was flawed, not done correctly. But you can't really complain about free content, right? Oh, contrary.
Speaker A
You can complain about free content. I've seen it. We'll get him out. Needs to be trained, too, because she forgot to do the weather.
Speaker A
It is a beautiful 87°. It's going to be hot out there, but I got my ice creams. I'm all cooled off.
Speaker A
We'll get them out. All right, Caitlyn's piloting this rig today. This is probably a job for the spud truck, but the record was already loaded, ready to go.
Speaker A
Steering's not super fast. Out running the pump, huh? It was fun for the first one.
Speaker A
Well, there it is right there. This is almost exactly where that Hummer was. Yeah. Let's have a look at it.
Speaker A
All right. Let's have a look at this here. Oh, she's had a bad day.
Speaker A
Yeah, it's a brand new ride, too. Wow. Yeah. First trip. That snapped off right there and pulled that CV out. [snorts] The whole shot, too.
Speaker A
I wasn't like being crazy. I mean, we were going fast, but not crazy fast.
Speaker A
And I think I think it just when we came around that last turn, I think it just compressed it and catapulted it up.
Speaker A
Wow. I'm not positively sure. Normally, you could like feel if you're out of control. We weren't out of control at all. And then all of a sudden, we just felt the catapult and I think it launched us up. We don't
Speaker A
even know for sure other than we ended up on our side. Brand new. Is this a 2026 or?
Speaker A
Yeah. Wow. Got about 50 miles on it. Well, now That's insane. Got the key for it.
Speaker A
Yes, I do. In my pickup truck. Oh, and I forgot it. That's okay. We forget the keys sometimes, too.
Speaker A
Yeah, it happens. All right, we're going to get this turned around and pick it up from the back and see if we can drag it out. You may be riding.
Speaker A
Yeah, maybe riding the brakes. Keep turn your other way. Stop that. That's good right there.
Speaker A
You're Oh, yeah. That's perfect. You excited to use your football now that it is connected to everything?
Speaker A
Now that everything's connected. What do you need? Do you want I need the the sidebyside manufacturers to understand that their machines break down damn all the time and [laughter] they need grab bars on them. That's what I need them to understand.
Speaker A
We should send an email. my shift. [laughter] All right, we'll see what kind of a kind of a lift angle we have here.
Speaker A
Those brand new winch lines. All right. All right, Caitlyn. Here's the here's the trick. I want to keep this tight and I want to as little abrasion right here as possible.
Speaker A
I think we're going to be kind of high like that. Okay, Caitlyn, you've got rear steer and we're going to sneak around here without doing any more damage.
Speaker A
Sounds good. So, you're probably going to want to turn driver. All right, let's give it a shot.
Speaker A
Here we go. There were a problem right there. And I'm all high high centered up there.
Speaker A
It's raining. Well, I've got front locker, but no rear locker cuz I haven't fixed that broken wire yet.
Speaker A
Oh, really? Yep. I can't believe we got this stuck. You want to drop this down and get yourself out?
Speaker A
This is offering me no res meaningful resistance. You don't think? No. We can use the pole, pal.
Speaker A
I don't think that works at all. I think it'll be enough. I like your optimism. We have another side by side here, too.
Speaker A
Yeah, we could pull off with that. Well, let's try this pull pal. Okay, let's see if we're self-contained enough.
Speaker A
I've used the pull pal once and it didn't go very well. That was in the mud though, right?
Speaker A
Yes. Well, here's where we really prove it to see if we're carrying this for no reason, just extra weight, or if we're carrying it for good reason.
Speaker A
All right. Not if we're in a hurry or anything. Uh-uh. I'll hold something. I want to see if this can be done by [music] one person. It's okay. I'm going to struggle through this [laughter] if I was stuck out here by
Speaker A
myself. This is This is your only hope. Am I calling 911 or am I making it?
Speaker A
There we go. Okay. I'm glad to be having lunch before this. [laughter] I did not think I put the wrecker in a bad spot. Just goes to show, doesn't matter how much you do this, something can go bad. It's always good to be
Speaker A
prepared. Now, I'm not usually prepared, but it would be really good if I was. I'm only going to pull a couple of feet. Like, I just need to go forward a couple of feet.
Speaker A
Yep. There it is. Well, what do you think, Kaitlyn? I don't like being right. I don't think it gave you anything.
Speaker A
We moved forward about a half an inch. I just I don't think this is rated for 12,000 lbs.
Speaker A
Not in the kind of sand we have. Yeah, that's been the second time we've tried it. Exactly the same result.
Speaker A
Yep. Okay, I'm going to try one more thing. Okay. See if it'll pull me sideways.
Speaker A
Oh man. See what I mean? Mhm. Put your foot on that as it goes in.
Speaker A
Okay. No, it didn't. It came out. Okay, go ahead. Got to hold it. Don't have high hopes. I really don't.
Speaker A
I [snorts] think if you're planting corn, it'd be great. Yeah. What is happening? I don't even know if that would pull a Jeep out out here.
Speaker A
We should test that one of these days. I should. All right. So, things aren't looking too good here. I'm going to get another purchase. I'm going to set the weight down, air my rear airbags up, and see if I can get enough pressure on some
Speaker A
of the tires to move us. But, man, that is insane. So, we got the load dropped. Now, let's see if this plow of not yet [music] justice will do something.
Speaker A
It's not even like tight. The line's not. All right, let's try this again. There it is. There's going to Oh.
Speaker A
Unbelievable. It did eventually work, though. It did. Or pointed the wrong direction, but I've been pointed worse ways than this before. All might not be lost. Those new tires are partly to blame for this.
Speaker A
Yeah. And the other part is we've got them pumped up to 14 lbs. They were at 10 before or nine or eight.
Speaker A
Makes a difference. But hey, maybe your pull pal's not worthless. Hey, I'm going to keep carrying it just in case.
Speaker A
Yeah. I mean, it just got us out. All right, back to business. It's been a minute since you've gotten the recorder stuck.
Speaker A
Yeah, it has been. All right, Caitlyn. New plan. We're gonna not get stuck. And we're gonna come up around that and drop back in right here.
Speaker A
Perfect. Maybe Man, I love this color. That's pretty. Yeah, it was a lot nicer without the sand all over it.
Speaker A
I like these guys. This this whole plastic needs to be replaced anyway. Yeah, we're not helping it. The other side is digging into worse.
Speaker A
Yeah, it's it is what it is. Let's just go. Okay. [music] Oh, that was insane.
Speaker A
It was that last drop right there. Oh, well, this one should be just as good.
Speaker A
That is a lot. As every time we hit a rock, the steering wheel just wants to throw itself one side or the other. And so I am just clutching it with my hands on my knee trying to keep it straight.
Speaker A
[music] [music] [music] [music] [music] Well, we made it out of the difficult part. Now we just have the pipeline road to go down and we should be home free.
Speaker A
[music] All right. Yeah. So, just leave it here. We'll have them come out and get it.
Speaker A
