Speaker A
It's honestly scary how much society undermines the importance of creativity. In school, all we do is consume information. At work, all we do is take instructions from our boss and follow exactly as he says. There's little to no room in the modern day for creativity. But most of us find it extremely hard to come up with new ideas, and that's what creativity is. It's the ability to come up with new ideas using your imagination. The first thing that kills your creativity is this right here. When you look at this diagram, what do you think it entails? You got a phone on one side, and you got a camera on the other. This phone represents consumption, and this camera here represents creation. All need to think of the word creativity, right? I'm going to write down here again. This is going to be really funny to think about, but this will stay in your head forever. Creativity is creativity. It's not consume. So why would you be surprised or confused or lost to find that you struggle to come up with new ideas when you spend most, if not all, your time consuming and barely any time creating? Think about it. In your day, what do you do that's creative? Let's say you're a student, or let's say you even go to work. You wake up in the morning, you watch videos on your phone while you're eating breakfast. Then you go to work or you go to school. And if you go to school, you just consume information by your teacher and write it down on a piece of paper, or you answer a few questions that need to follow a rubric or criteria. Or if you're at work, you just listen to the instructions of your boss and do exactly as he or she says. Then what happens? You go home on the bus or in the car, and you listen to music or a podcast. Then later in your day comes dinner. Do you sit down and talk with your family while you're having dinner or your friends? No, you probably sit there on your phone. Where is the creativity? And you wonder why you're not a creative person. Isn't this scary? If most of us are unable to create new ideas because all we do is consume, how are humans supposed to develop? Yeah, you think that creativity is a thing that only a few percent of people in this world have? No, we all have it. It's just that we've locked our brain in a cage through consumption. Let's say you don't go to the gym. You don't do any push-ups. You don't do any workouts to build on your muscle. Would you search up online, "Why am I not buff?" No, that's stupid, right? So think about that with creativity. Creativity is a thinking process, the ability to come up with new ideas with your imagination. Train that, and I'll teach you how to do that later. But I just want to let you know right now, look at your screen time, look at the activities throughout your day, and see how you can replace those activities with something more creative than consuma. Is that a word? I made it up. Now put that in the dictionary. Sorry to interrupt, but for anybody that is looking for more one-on-one help when it comes to marketing in music specifically, then I have one-to-one mentorship services. It's halfway through February, and we are already 75% full for this month. So if you are looking for mentorship services, go ahead and apply down below. The next thing that kills creativity is feedback. Most of us, especially in school, are encouraged to get feedback from teachers and people of authority. Yeah, the only reason why we ask somebody for feedback is because we assume that they'll give us good advice. However, feedback is sort of a mask for what we are really looking for when it comes to asking people for feedback, and that is validation. Think about this. Let's say you have a great idea. You wanted to create a car, design a car that doesn't work on fuel but works on energy. I think you know where I'm going with this. Imagine if you told your teachers about that idea and they said it was stupid and ineffective and practically impossible. Imagine if you told your parents that idea and they said, "Go and get a job and stop thinking about these big dreams that will never happen." For most people, they would take those comments and they would listen and then quit. How many times have you come up with ideas, didn't act on them, and then found out later on in life that somebody has swooped that exact same idea and became massively successful with it? It happened to me so many times. So many times with YouTube video ideas, inventions, things I came up with but was too scared to do because, you know, people told me that validation is a killer to your creativity. The more times you ask for feedback and you get shut down, and you ask for feedback and you get shut down, your mind will stop coming up with out-of-the-box ideas because you don't want to get shut down again. Do you understand what I mean? It's like a defense mechanism. We want to avoid getting bad feedback, so in turn, we become less creative. For you, let's say you're a content creator, right? And you want to make a video that you know is going to get attention. However, you're afraid of the feedback that you're going to get, negative feedback, and therefore you hold yourself back from making those crazy video ideas. For example, I made a video where I was hanging on a rope to make a point of how to catch people's attention, right? If I were to ask my friends, "Hey, what do you think about this idea?" Of course, all of them would say, "No, don't do it. That's going to get a lot of controversy," blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. But I did it anyway. Now, that video didn't go viral. It only got a few hundred thousand views. However, it's the act of holding yourself back or holding thoughts back because you're afraid of the negative judgment and feedback that you're going to get from it that will kill your creativity. If you want to ask for feedback, here are two things you want to keep in mind. The first one is becoming aware as to whether you're actually looking for some advice and help or opinions, or if you're looking for validation. And if you find yourself seeking validation, then hold yourself back from asking for feedback. Now, the next step is to choose what to spit and choose what to swallow. Pause. And what I mean by that is when people give you advice, listen, but don't take the advice unless you feel like it's actually applicable to you. Because quite often, people's words, especially from people who don't matter or don't even have the right to give an opinion, can hurt us forever, and it can traumatize us from even wanting to come up with creative ideas and lead us to just be mediocre. The next thing that kills your creativity is when you focus more on results over the process itself. So this is obviously how it shouldn't be. This should be the other way around. What happens when you focus more on getting results such as money and views over the process itself? Let's talk about creating content for now. Your style of thinking becomes more formulaic rather than intuitive because you begin to try and find formulas to become as efficient as possible with content creation or whatever it is to create the best piece of content as possible. You are not behaving intuitively on camera. You're trying to come up with hooks that are going to capture people's attention. You're trying to speak in a way that's going to capture people's attention, and you lose authenticity. And you can see this in real time. I am a victim of it myself, where I create videos where I try to give people formulas to becoming viral on social media, and I am guilty of this. And I do want to reduce doing this because it actually does more damage than it does good. Because I've noticed that for people, especially myself actually, when I look for formulas to achieving something, it sounds great at first. However, it seriously depletes your mind of thinking outside of the box because you try to find all these formulas to achieve things that should take a long time to achieve or that require skills to achieve. When it comes to how to make a viral video, we may get a formula that says hook someone's attention in the first three seconds.
