So, without further ado, time to grab a coffee, sit down, and get started. Okay, welcome to your first track in Ableton Live 12 Suite. So, for this first track, I'm just going to quickly break down what we're going to be learning. We're going to be making a very basic melodic house track. We're going to be using piano, we're going to use pads, we're going to be making a lead, we're going to be using drum samples to build out a nice drum loop, we're going to be using effects, we're going to learn sidechain compression, and we're also going to have a look at EQ and filters. And then we're going to also arrange our entire track into a full song.

Okay, so let's get started. When you open up Ableton Live 12 Suite, you should be seeing something similar to what I'm seeing over here in front of you. You might have different colors over here or different channels, but you should be seeing at least a MIDI channel and an audio channel. These are two different types of channels here, and we'll get back to that later on. You should be seeing some return channels here and your main—it's called your master channel in Ableton Live 12—they called it main. I'm not sure why they did that. And then you've got kind of two different views here. In Ableton Live 11, you might have noticed if you had tried using that before, that when you open it, it opens up in this session view. In this version, it opens up, I think, in the arrangement view. But if not, you can always click on these to toggle between them, or you can hit Tab. In Live 12, you can also open up this to have a look at your mixer, can click on that, or click on it to make that disappear, which is a nice little upgrade.

Think if you click here, Sounds—is it? Where is it? I think you might have to go to Drums. You can choose some drum kits over here. And there's also some—you can search. Like if you search clap, you can find a bunch of stock sounds here.

So, let's get started. The first thing I want to do is I want to get into our MIDI channels and how we can make something musical. We want to write some piano chords, so for that, we need to use our MIDI channel. And so this is a MIDI channel, and if you don't see a MIDI channel, you can always right-click here and go Insert MIDI Track, and that'll give you a new MIDI track. I'm just going to click on that and delete it with the Delete key.

to go to Drums you can choose some drum kits over here um and there's also some you can search like if you search clap you can find a bunch of stock Sounds here so let's get started the first thing I want to do is I want to

And how we can add some notes to that is we can highlight a section on our channel here, and we can right-click and go Insert Empty MIDI Clip, and that'll allow us to start writing notes, making some melodies and chords. But in order to do that, we need to have an instrument loaded into this channel. And what I want to do first is make some piano chords. So here, we can go down to Instruments, and maybe we can filter here. We can go down to Piano and Keys, and we can see we have a bunch of instruments here. The instrument I want to look for is the Grand Piano. So if we just click on the down arrow here in the instrument rack, you can browse and look for Grand Piano, or you can just search Grand, and then you can see you have the Grand Piano.

see a midi Channel you can always right click here and go insert midi track and that'll give you a new midi track I'm just going to click on that and delete it with a delete key um and how we can add some notes to

And if I try and drag that onto an audio channel, it won't let me drag it onto an audio channel. You can see here at the bottom, this turns orange and gives you an error. It says only audio effects can be inserted into an audio track. So we've got to insert it onto a MIDI track. So here, you can drag it onto there like that, or you can just click on the channel and then double-click it, and then it'll load it onto the channel.

need to have an instrument loaded into this Channel and what I want to do first is make uh some piano chords so here we can go down to instruments and maybe we can filter here we can go down to to piano and

So now you can see it's loaded onto the channel here, and it's got a bunch of knobs. Don't worry about that just yet, but now we should be able to make a sound with this channel. So if we click on this, double-click on this MIDI clip here, this is where we can put notes in. And you can also change the length of this clip. So what might have happened is you maybe would have created your own MIDI channel, but your own MIDI clip, but maybe you made a much shorter one than me. If you want to make it longer, you click and drag it. The problem is it's set to loop mode, so you can see these little dots here show that it loops. So if I put in a note here by double-clicking, you'll then get four notes spread across there, whereas on this one, you get one note. That's because loop mode is turned on here, so you can just turn off loop mode, and then you'll be able to drag this out to whatever length you want. So just be aware of that. So I'm just going to delete that.

Another thing you might notice is that this has a bunch of purple lines on it, and that is just highlighting the scale that we're in. You can see here it says C major, and at the top here, it also says C major. This is our global scale that we have set up over here. We can change that. I think today I want to work in A minor. It's one of the easiest keys to remember because even if we turn off the highlight scale, we can see that A minor starts at A, and it all makes up all of the white notes over here.

Okay, so I think at this point it's time to do a tiny bit of music theory before we start writing our first chords. So very basic music theory is we have these things called scales or keys, and all it is is just a collection of notes that sound good together. So here we have the A minor scale, which starts at A. It goes A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and then back to A, and it just repeats all the way up this keyboard. So we can move all of these notes across so we can hear each one of these notes. And I'm just going to hit my space bar, and it'll play them.
