C tier is niche, and it has features that might rarely come up in play unless you're doing a very specific build or combo. There might also be a high opportunity cost for a C tier subclass, which means that there's some tradeoff that you have to do in order to make it function well. And D tier is for subclasses whose features are seldom useful and it doesn't synergize well with the base class features, spells, feats, or skills. It may be a trap playstyle which actually weakens the strength of the base class. So if we give a D tier out, that's us saying don't play it with that.

Let's dive into the 2024 Player's Handbook and look at the fighter subclasses. Let's kick things off by talking about the Battle Master. The Battle Master is the subclass that has Battle Master maneuvers and superiority dice. They use the dice to fuel their maneuvers so that they can do extra things whenever they are attacking or possibly as reactions or to just change the way that the fighter interacts with many pillars of play.

So, at level three, when you gain the subclass, you get your first pool of superiority. You're going to start off by learning three maneuvers, so you get to pick any three of the 20 that are in the Player's Handbook, and you've got four superiority dice which power those maneuvers.
