[Music] Hello and welcome to From Dole Square to Where, a very special show where I've got a very special guest with me today, Jerry Payton. How are you, Jerry?
00:30
Speaker A
I'm very well, thank you.
00:46
Speaker A
Fantastic. I'm really, really pleased that you've joined me today as advertised. Initially, it was going to be Bob Wilson with us as well, but unfortunately, Bob's had to be taken into hospital.
00:59
Speaker A
So I'm sure that everyone watching and listening, and all the Arsenal fans, will be with me in wishing him all the very best with regards to that.
01:19
Speaker A
And hopefully, we'll be able to speak to him again in the future. So, Jerry, for those who don't know, where are you actually speaking to us from?
01:43
Speaker A
Right, I'm speaking from Japan. I'm on—I don't know if you remember in 2002 when England was in the Japanese World Cup, and yeah, the squad trained at Awaji Island.
01:59
Speaker A
And I'm speaking from Awaji Island now, at the actual training facilities that England used during the 2002 World Cup. I actually train a group of—I'm linked with Aoi Gakuen High School and Professional Football Academy.
02:15
Speaker A
And we train on the same facilities that England trained during the World Cup 2002.
02:35
Speaker A
And wow, funny as you get there, there's one pitch and it's a beautiful grass pitch, absolute, and there's a big photo of an England player.
02:50
Speaker A
And it's—they call it Beckham David.
03:01
Speaker A
Yeah, and they call it Beckham pitch. So we were very fortunate that we actually train on Beckham pitch.
03:16
Speaker A
Beckham pitch, fantastic. That's excellent. You've been out there for a little while now as well, haven't you? You've done a bit of traveling since you left Arsenal.
03:38
Speaker A
Yes, I live in Suzuka, but the academy is on Awaji Island, so I'm staying with the group. We played two games recently in the Yoga Championship, which we won, so we're through to the next stage.
04:01
Speaker A
We're three games away from the finals, and then if we win the Yoga Championship, we go on then to the whole of Japan Championship. So we're doing our best.
04:18
Speaker A
And we're training very hard, and things are going very well at the moment.
04:31
Speaker A
Fantastic. I'm really pleased to hear it. And how—I mean, it must be a bit of a change for you living out there. I mean, how are you finding it personally with regards to the food and everything like that?
04:44
Speaker A
Yeah, the food is top. I mean, the diet in Japan is, for me, it's the best, the best in the world. You've got sushi, the Kobe steak is almost all over the world.
04:58
Speaker A
The diet is top. You know, there's nothing about the service in the restaurants, the service generally throughout Japan, the way they've handled the coronavirus, the COVID pandemic, they're very disciplined.
05:16
Speaker A
Everybody wears face masks, everybody washes their hands, and it shows how articulate they are that they put the Olympics on and the Paralympics.
05:32
Speaker A
The Kobe situation got very bad where we were. I think we were doing 5,000 people a week, not 5,000 people a day at one stage.
05:46
Speaker A
And we now, we're down to, I think, 250 people.
06:04
Speaker A
You know, and life here has gone back to normal. We're near enough ending the native emergency, and we're coming back to normal.
06:20
Speaker A
That's fantastic. Well, I really enjoyed the Olympics. It must have been absolutely massive over there over the summer, of course.
06:36
Speaker A
And did you get to see any of it yourself?
06:54
Speaker A
Yeah, I watched on television because I worked all the way through. I was here working with the—we're about three hours on the Shinkansen from Tokyo.
07:10
Speaker A
And some of the events were nearer, some of the cycling events and some of the other events were quite near.
07:27
Speaker A
But I do, you know what, I was working the whole time. I was on the morning and afternoon with the group, going through exercises and just developing the young players.
07:38
Speaker A
And everything's gone very well. I'm well pleased, very pleased how things have gone.
07:57
Speaker A
And yeah, I'm looking forward to that. We've got another game on Saturday, so I'm looking forward to that one.
08:13
Speaker A
Oh, fantastic. Well, good luck with that. Good luck. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
08:28
Speaker A
But obviously, you had a long, very long distinguished career in goalkeeping, obviously mainly with Fulham and Bournemouth during your career.
08:46
Speaker A
Republic of Ireland, you were at the Euros, weren't you, in '88 and the World Cup in '90 as part of the squad, which must have been extremely exciting for you in those times.
09:00
Speaker A
I think in all, I had 16 years. I made my debut in '77, and I think I finished my last game was against Portugal in America in the US.
09:19
Speaker A
We played like a US Cup in America, so I think I finished in 2002, 2003, just before the World Cup in '94 in America.
09:42
Speaker A
And then I actually went to Japan then with West Ham. At the time, I was number two goalkeeper to Ludo McCluskey and traveled to Japan. That was my first time in Japan.
10:02
Speaker A
And yeah, that's why I've come back again because I enjoyed it.
10:20
Speaker A
And, you know, I like—I like my wife is Japanese. My son has just come back. He joined the under-13 elite goalkeeping group last week, so brilliant.
10:38
Speaker A
Yeah, he's doing very well. He's doing very well. He's come through the—he's at S-Pulse. He's one of the under-13s. He plays for the under-14s as well, goalkeeper.
10:54
Speaker A
So he's following in the footsteps of Dad.
11:13
Speaker A
Oh, excellent. Well, certainly to keep my eye open for him as well, wishing him well in his career.
11:26
Speaker A
Obviously, you had a very long career as Arsenal goalkeeping coach and being sort of an Arsenal channel but general football lover, I must say, as well.
11:42
Speaker A
But it must be very interesting for everyone watching about your time at Arsenal.
11:55
Speaker A
I see, I believe I'm right in saying that you pretty much didn't cross over with Bob, who was due to be on the show, but so you sort of followed on from him, didn't you?
12:10
Speaker A
Yeah, for 15 years as Arsenal's goalkeeping coach, correct.
12:27
Speaker A
To be honest, both me and Jens Lehmann arrived at the club at the start of the 03-04 season.
12:39
Speaker A
We both looked at each other. Jens was taking over from an Arsenal legend, David Seaman, and I was taking over from Bob Wilson, another—you know, the club was with the coach had done so much. They'd won the double and everything else.
13:00
Speaker A
And I remember looking at Jens and saying, well, yes, here we are, and now we've got to prove that we can do the job.
13:16
Speaker A
You've got to prove that you're a good goalie. I've got to prove that I can coach.
13:34
Speaker A
So yeah, I think both of us at that time, when we got together, me and Jens, I mean, Jens was already a very advanced goalkeeper.
13:44
Speaker A
I mean, he was number two to their Oliver Kahn, who was Oliver Kahn, yeah, one of the legends of Germany.
14:01
Speaker A
And they had a little bit—you know, Jens was, "I'm better than him," and you know, Oliver Kahn, a little bit of a relationship.
14:14
Speaker A
But when you know Jens, that's Jens. Jens always thinks he's the number one, and he wants to be the number one.
14:28
Speaker A
And that's been his strength all his career. You know, he's very pragmatic about what he wants to do, and he's very focused on what he wants to do.
14:45
Speaker A
And I think both of us at that time raised our levels because we changed a little bit how Arsenal goalkeepers played from that.
15:01
Speaker A
Because David was more a very good shot stopper, a very good reader of the game, very good understanding of the game.
15:17
Speaker A
And we went for a goalkeeper playing high, playing sometimes outside his box, more a sweeper goalkeeper.
15:32
Speaker A
We wanted Jens at the time—I wanted him to come for as many crosses as possible, you know, and help them.
15:49
Speaker A
So maybe one of the, for me, one of the finest cross-takers I've ever seen in football.
16:07
Speaker A
I mean, Jens would take balls on the penalty spot and sometimes further out.
16:23
Speaker A
And I think his shot-stopping, I think the strength was his sweeping and coming for crosses.
16:36
Speaker A
The invincible season, yeah, was—we went because I remember games when we went to Manchester City, Man United—
16:50
Speaker A
w
17:05
Speaker A
the goalkeepers the way that i saw it they were almost one of a kind weren't they yes and but then then in came sort of as you've rightly mentioned like the sweeper keeper um sort of late night maybe during the 90s
17:20
Speaker A
it was very much more of a fashionable thing for them to do um and coming through but then now the way i see it they are part of you know the full defense they are part of you don't just get the black
17:34
Speaker A
back four and the goalkeeper anymore i think i see the goalkeeper as part of the defense period the way that they're playing now with with their feet and i find it quite fascinating really and i think that's purely the way that um
17:50
Speaker A
arsenal have brought in you know aaron ramsdale now because he's so good with his feet i'm sure he could play you know out on the pitch as well you know as part as put on in midfield maybe because that's the way things are
18:02
Speaker A
nowadays i mean do you see that way do you see that they are more of an integral part of the defense as a whole and if so one further question to add on to the end of that what is the sort of the training routine
18:15
Speaker A
of the goalkeeper nowadays do they because i know that in days gone by and up until probably still the present day the goalkeepers go off and train on their own throughout the you know the um the period are they are they more brought into the
18:30
Speaker A
the the training with the the rest of the team nowadays and if if not why not because that's it's really important i think to build that relationship on the pitch with the gut with the defense good questions andrew the modern
18:43
Speaker A
goalkeeper first and foremost when i first went to arsenal i'd come from fulham i i i'd had two years at fulham before coming to arsenal and i'd worked with anderson and and van der sar was one of the
18:57
Speaker A
one of the players i i was lucky enough to have had a big input in signing you know going to see alpha ed at harrods and and saying listen i think at 31 edwin van der sar is one of the best goalkeepers
19:13
Speaker A
and he and i remember sit down then with alpha head saying well his distribution is top top level this edwin van der sark can play on the pitch out of his hands off the floor he can play change sides he can pick people out
19:30
Speaker A
out of his hands half volleying and volleying he can drop balls in behind and when you're running balls will be coming over your head so i've been working at fulham for two years with john tagana and christian damiano uh
19:47
Speaker A
with always using outfield players so i i'd spent two seasons but even before that when i was in sweden i always use outfield players so i always work with outfield players and goalkeepers and i use them for distribution and i use them for shot
20:05
Speaker A
stopping i use them for 1v1s because you know no no matter what a goalkeeper coach can do you know when you're working with outfield players you're getting real movement and some players where they're changing direction and they're shooting from all angles
20:23
Speaker A
it's very important that the goalkeepers are it's live and it's real you know so with jens and all the goalkeepers i work with and i work with van der sar with i used to take eight to ten players on crossing drills
20:39
Speaker A
and and finishing and shooting so he would be moving and then catching the ball and distributing the ball at the same time so a lot of the drills and i've carried on this uh the way uh i started at arsenal i took players to
20:56
Speaker A
work with yen's on crossing i took players to do shooting free kicks and you you're gonna you get goalkeep you get the goalkeepers actually uh live working quicker than the game so a lot of the drills that i i was
21:13
Speaker A
doing then was quicker than the game and then the development i always took the young goalkeepers like fabianski chesney with the ends and with the top goalkeepers we we i took mark poom who's a fantastic uh professional and still a
21:29
Speaker A
very good goalkeeper to arsenal to work and to help me to develop young the young goalkeepers so that sort of development and now you're talking about it now we would i think i was doing it 15 years ago 17 years ago with full of
21:47
Speaker A
arsenal so and and you can see now i mean chesney playing for juventus is very good with his feet the work that we'd already done and even people like vito manoni who's now at monaco is very good with his feet and and a
22:05
Speaker A
good shot stopper so and then fabianski is at west ham he's he's developed very well as a shot stopper maybe not as good with his feet as and emmy martinez now i mean for me emmy with his feet on the floor
22:24
Speaker A
out of his hands and he's power as well for me he's up there as one of the top goalkeepers i think he's the best goalkeeper we ever we ever produced at arsenal because of his physical presence and his recruitment of power and the any
22:40
Speaker A
size as well i mean emmy's six feet five he's the same height and but more power than against lehman you know and and he can recruit power very quickly and he's got a long body length you know so
22:54
Speaker A
so this all this put together you know uh you know and but you're right andrew the modern goalkeeper now has to be able to be a midfield player you know his vision his long vision um when you look at edison for
23:12
Speaker A
manchester city he can deliver a 70-yard ball into the corner of the 18-yard box yeah somebody right and he'll hit a diagonal ball on the other side same with allison beckham and um and when you've got mendy who's just
23:30
Speaker A
come to chelsea who i i like you know these i like him yeah yeah i like mendy i think and again big long body length lots of and power and big you know good shot stopping and a big presence in the
23:45
Speaker A
goal and has made a big difference uh since into chelsea and i think emmy emmy martinez is i think he's with these four you know you know he's you can i mean listen i've had him since he was
24:02
Speaker A
17 years of age so i'm a big fan of emmy you know yeah being his coach and and developing him over the years but i think emmy you know and i remember talking to emmy as a young boy
24:17
Speaker A
emmy had two massive dreams i want to play for arsenal and be the number one and i want to win the fa cup for arsenal uh and i want to play for argentina those you know to accomplish both those dreams
24:34
Speaker A
you know it's amazing it's amazing yeah and it's really amazing you know and and you know when you're when when you when you're developing from a very young age you've got you know there's there's a hundred people who will tell
24:48
Speaker A
you no he's got no chance he's no he's not that good he's not this good jerry you've got no chance with him okay yeah no problem but you know one thing a coach has belief and patience those two and the best
25:00
Speaker A
players have that as well obviously yeah there you go and and one thing with emmy for me you know and and wojciech and fabianski and and vito mcconney and all the other young goalkeepers that we we've brought through
25:16
Speaker A
they it's important that you give them the confidence and the belief that they can do it you know definitely 100 that's that that's one of the most important parts of coaching isn't it you know it's not just about
25:29
Speaker A
how to make them a better player but it's what you know what you can put up there for them as well exactly because you know i've always i've always felt this you know if if you've got doubts about a player
25:41
Speaker A
without you actually telling him he reads it from your body language he'll read it from what you say to him from you know how your mannerism is towards him you know so it's very important for the coach to
25:57
Speaker A
really believe believe in him and give him the confidence to go on you know yeah absolutely you know i i see i don't know how much you've seen so far of uh aaron ramsdale um with your schedule being up what it's
26:12
Speaker A
like over there at the moment whether you've had a chance to see too much of him but um i see a lot of similarities with aaron ramsdale to emmy martinez i know it's very early days for his career with arsenal but i do see
26:26
Speaker A
a lot of similarities there and i think that that's what puts him over and above and with the greatest respect to to leno um who i think is a very good goalkeeper as well and he's very rarely let us down if
26:40
Speaker A
any if any time you know everyone made everyone's make a few mistakes but he's been a very good goalkeeper but i think it's um his presence it's just not as great as martinez's was and what how it looks
26:55
Speaker A
like ramsdales is as well at the moment he's he's not as vocal um anywhere near as much as the the other two in the box as far as i can see um now i i think didn't from correct me from wrong didn't uh
27:09
Speaker A
leno come in just as you after you you yes arsenal yeah so yeah so you didn't have a chance to work with him personally one-on-one what actually happened was we sent emmy uh we sent him to be honest i was
27:22
Speaker A
responsible as well for sending emmy out on 14 loans and um just in 2018 uh speaking to the boss at the start of the season boss said listen get you need to send emmy somewhere where he's playing the whole
27:40
Speaker A
season at a good level so um spain there was two or three teams in spain who showed his own interest in emmy so qadhafi uh gaddafi who came in um for him and promised because i said to emmy and his agent he
28:02
Speaker A
has to be they have to promise us he's going to play he's going to be the number one he's going to play the whole season otherwise the long don't go you know so at the time the president this is the story the agent tells me now
28:21
Speaker A
uh but you know this is the problems but the agent told me that the president promised he would be the number one but the manager kuwaita who's now at crystal palace was there and the manager liked kuwaita and emmy went there played
28:43
Speaker A
kuwaita started the season and emmy came in i came over watched him play against real madrid played against atletico madrid and he played two or three he ended up playing five or six games but not enough games to uh establish himself
29:00
Speaker A
to prove to all the he had to prove to everybody at the club that he was good enough to be the number one and because he didn't play many games i said at the time before i left and
29:16
Speaker A
this is documented i said emmy martinez is better i think just go with emmy but the power said that they uh wanted to bet to bring in leno so you know i didn't argue you know that was that was their
29:33
Speaker A
decision but i said emmy for me is a top top goalkeeper so i i believed that he would and he had he had some bad luck because you know the president and the manager didn't agree and uh you know he didn't play didn't
29:50
Speaker A
play enough games to to convince the people at that time at arsenal that he could be the number one so they they paid 20 million for lena so yeah but now i think uh but going on to aaron
30:06
Speaker A
ramsdale uh aaron was on our he was at bournemouth for many seasons and we we watched him i i watched him on many occasions at bournemouth because i'd been at bournemouth and i knew of aaron and he is yeah no you're right you're correct
30:24
Speaker A
he's a very talented goalkeeper he re game very very well he's understanding he's good he's got a good personality he's got a he's got a presence on the pitch um and i think you know i think the more he plays at the level
30:42
Speaker A
he's playing at now it can only be good for him you know exactly yeah i mean 23 obviously yes we know he's very young for a goalkeeper and what's he i think what um me must be about 27 now i believe
30:57
Speaker A
28. so he's got five years on on aaron ramsdale and i and the signs so far that i've seen with aaron is very very promising for me i mean i think he's exactly what we've lacked for a while um
31:13
Speaker A
well obviously we had that short six months with emmy as number one which is incredible uh i think every arsenal fan will will vouch for that but um apart from that i think we've missed someone with that real box presence
31:28
Speaker A
of uh of an aaron ramsdale he has become a firm fans favorite so so quickly with his with his personality on the pitch i think that's a big part of it don't you i think it it's it's it's a
31:42
Speaker A
very big part when you go to a big club you must have character you must have a presence you must have a personality because at big clubs you know you can't you're in every in every big game and
31:57
Speaker A
you're correct andrew i watched i've watched every premiership game i i watch every every premiership i go through all the premiership games um over two or three days while i'm in japan and i've watched all the arsenal games and
32:13
Speaker A
i remember one save which was a very critical save a crucial save for the club was at burnley when he's going he's he's running out for a 1v1 situation and he changes he has to change because the guy gets to the ball first and just
32:33
Speaker A
moves the ball slightly and he goes in with his foot and he still he changes the angle of his foot so now he's touching the ball and pushing the ball out so for me this is top level because yeah
32:49
Speaker A
that was the penalty shout wasn't it thank you yeah that was absolutely unbelievable uh he did so well to not give away that penalty he don't because as he's running he changed the angle so he didn't go normally with goalkeepers
33:08
Speaker A
they think oh i've got to win the ball and they just go and try and win it but he he analyzed it to the last second so as the player touched it he changed the angle of his foot so now he's touching
33:22
Speaker A
the ball and the boy goes over his foot now if he doesn't do that last split second change of movement it's a penalty yeah yeah i i like him i like i like his presence in the goal he's come for a good punch
33:38
Speaker A
at crystal palace um and you know i i think he can only get better and i think he's part of the england squad now so i think he's got a big future yeah definitely he actually i don't know
33:53
Speaker A
what he saw the game yesterday he asked um did you did you see any of that i saw i've i've seen only the highlights i've seen the save on the left-hand side of the post the doubles and then they've shot and he's gone full
34:10
Speaker A
length and tipped it around the post yeah that was unbelievable but there's so many players in front of him blocking his view as well you actually see him like peering that between between the uh the players before he actually dived
34:24
Speaker A
full length to tip it around the post from um that was a a brilliant save yeah brilliant and you know all all i i say it all the time you must you must keep the the team being being a uh an arsenal goalkeeper
34:41
Speaker A
or being one of the top keepers you they make crucial saves crucial times of the game um this is part of being a great goalkeeper you know yeah definitely so so aaron at the moment has kept arsenal in games and and made crucial saves and
35:01
Speaker A
um i think he will only get better now at the same as um emmy now emmy's emmy's gone on now and and you know argentina the three penalty saves the first time in 25 years that they've got america so you know so that tells you
35:19
Speaker A
something about exactly yeah you know and and aaron is is doing very well at the moment you know he's doing very well and and you can see that the defense is calm with his presence that's the thing i think that's what
35:33
Speaker A
there was was the difference in the the fa cup run we had was having him as in the defense because i've never had that confidence with leno that he can marshal that defense in front of him he's just not vocal enough as far as i'm
35:50
Speaker A
concerned and he doesn't he just doesn't command the situation as well as emmy does and so far touchwood as well as uh aaron does because they will not let anyone get in their way they'll just happily sort of knock
36:05
Speaker A
out they're one of their their teammates if if it meant getting to the ball and commanding that situation but i don't see that with leno i see him being a bit more timid as far as that's concerned i don't know whether
36:16
Speaker A
you you agree with me on that i think i think 100 but i use the word brave and aaron in in the punch and in any every situation in a 1v1 situation same as the penalty situation at burnley
36:33
Speaker A
aaron goes there with his eyes locked on the ball and going for the ball and he'll go head first exactly the same they will put their bodies on the line to make saves they will put their bodies on the line to
36:48
Speaker A
keep the team in games i'm not saying i i don't like um you know saying anything bad about goalkeepers but i just think that these two have that they put their bodies on the line and they do everything they possibly can to
37:05
Speaker A
to keep the team in games now i've seen leno and i think he's he's a good goalkeeper but it's only small percentages you know turning away not getting there quick enough not reading it quick enough not you know trying to go with your foot
37:23
Speaker A
or you're trying to go with your hands so there's many many situations over a season but there's there's one particular that i don't know whether you saw this season that i was very um disappointed with with leno it was the
37:38
Speaker A
um uh the first game of the season brentford arsenal brentford yes and um they scored a goal from the throwing if you remember brentford and leno was being blocked off on the line by one of their defenders yes that
37:54
Speaker A
really infuriated me because he didn't seem to create enough of a fuss and make himself known that he was being fouled you know to the referee he was very quiet and just let it continue from looking back i've seen the
38:10
Speaker A
situation several times yeah and i just think in that situation you've got to do anything as a goalkeeper to get that guy off you and commander your area and um even if i made a joke on one of the
38:22
Speaker A
podcasts even if you like shouted as loud as you possibly could into the defender's ear who was fouling you to like burst his eardrum just to make your point that you're not going to put up with this and i he he was too weak in
38:35
Speaker A
that situation as far as i was concerned i agree what what i did see the situation and um uh what we worked on with emmy and um jens and i jens if you stood on yent jens would walk around you and stand outside you so
38:53
Speaker A
then the other guy so who's ever marking him would come walk round and mark jens again on the outside so jens then would walk on the outside again he'd walk on so now jens had created space off the line
39:07
Speaker A
so he can't block him in there because jens went around the other side he goes round he goes round again he goes around again so now again he's got a big space behind now he can come back into the
39:18
Speaker A
space and now go and attack the throw-in or depending on where the ball is going so jen's always like space behind him on the line so i come back off him and now i'm coming to the near if the ball is coming
39:33
Speaker A
to the near or the ball is going further towards the penalty spot jens comes around his back and takes the ball there and we do the same with emmy so you're right what leno got ended up being pushed in on his line
39:49
Speaker A
and blocking him coming off his line so just walk around the other side just walk around and let him walk back round and now you created half a yard straight away by doing that exactly you need that space that half a
40:04
Speaker A
yard to propel yourself forward towards the ball and knock the player flying if needs be just to make sure you do what you need to do exactly and you use your arm and you come back and then you push you
40:16
Speaker A
you're going to use your arm like there to to to create that momentum to come and get the ball you're not going to push them and give a stupid file away but what you are going to do you're
40:26
Speaker A
going to create a bit of space between you and him as well so yeah now you're going to go and attack the ball and you've got the space sometimes to come out and go back again so you you're
40:36
Speaker A
generating momentum to go and win the ball so this but you know it's there's many many situations you know in in the game where goalkeepers it's like many many uh different techniques different situations that they know how to
41:01
Speaker A
how to get out of or how to make you know make sure they can they can come and win the ball and i think the premiership now is probably the hardest league in the world because we allow more
41:14
Speaker A
contact more um blocking more difficult situations than than italy and spain you know it's it's i think for goalkeepers it's a very it's quite a physical league and it and and high intensity league definitely you know i mean something i touched on earlier
41:33
Speaker A
which um some people may find really stupid uh comment from me but when i talk talked about goalkeeper training and then joining in more with their defenders with you know becoming better players uh with their feet is it a situation
41:51
Speaker A
whereby a goalkeeper will actually nowadays go and join in like an eight v eight or a five you know five aside actually on the pitch to improve their ball skills on on the playing on the floor andrew in japan
42:05
Speaker A
i i take the goalkeepers for a warm-up for 15-20 minutes where they're just doing handling then straight after i've done a 15-20 minute warm-up where they're they're warm with their hands and they they're doing a little bit of catching i take them over
42:22
Speaker A
and i do all passing drills with cones and the goalkeepers are part of those drills and they do that every day for 25 minutes they will do passing drills in different angles their first touch having a good first touch
42:39
Speaker A
passing accuracy and then we increase the accuracy when we go into shadow play play dropping balls diagonally runners going behind balls going over the top so it's very very important to include your goalkeepers as as as outfield players
42:57
Speaker A
now because the game requires goalkeepers to be outfield players so exactly i treat the goalkeepers as outfit players yeah and they will do their own uh individual work when they're doing different techniques different uh techniques in the goal but
43:17
Speaker A
and like a center forward we'll do individual stuff the the defenders will do individual stuff individual stuff but the whole group become together in passing and being part of that you know they're very important past part of the team exactly
43:35
Speaker A
yeah and i i think that um nowadays more than ever they need to be training with the rest of the squad rather than like the old days where the goalkeepers were just if they got any extra training at
43:47
Speaker A
all goalkeepers back in the day i know that a lot of the time they didn't even bother but when they did it's all goalkeepers go off they do their own thing and the outfield players will go and do their own thing and it was
43:57
Speaker A
they're very much with them in our situation of thank you but nowadays like i said there should be and to build up the relationships as well on the pitch and it's very very important to know exactly what each of them were going to
44:11
Speaker A
do and be able to trust each other um and yeah and very much build that because i i i've made the conscious effort not to say the back four anymore i always say the back five because it's it's a one unit as far as i'm concerned
44:25
Speaker A
and they're all into the interchange nowadays of playing out for the back yeah i mean it's not it's not like it used to be no well the way the game's going andrew in the next five years the goalkeeper will be
44:39
Speaker A
coming out of the box and joining in with the two center banks he will and it's happening now at manchester city it's happening now at liverpool where allison will walk out sometimes and they'll push the two full backs in and the two center backs will
44:54
Speaker A
split and he's he's he's in the middle and then he's looking to hit 70 he'll hit diagonal balls and when you push six on to press he's the extra player the goalkeeper outside the box and he'll be passing the
45:08
Speaker A
ball and then passing through the lines as well passing into midfield or dropping balls over over the full back for the runners to go behind or he'll be dropping balls center forward they'll be dropping balls in for the wide player who once comes comes
45:23
Speaker A
short and they'll go over the top and then the pullbacks will be looking to go wide so it's very now within all the tactics now the goalkeeper's passing is is is crucial you know yeah he's he's precision of his pass
45:41
Speaker A
the accuracy of his pass the speed of the ball all very important part parts of tactics now with within goalkeeping and the modern goalkeeper not only has to keep his team in games with and be a superb shot stopper um
46:01
Speaker A
and you know when when we talk about the olden days it always used to be you know the goalkeeper couldn't play on the pitch and he was maybe a little bit fat or maybe he was the worst he wasn't
46:14
Speaker A
very good on the pitch but now he's the the goalkeeper physically has to be the best he has to be quick up his line so emmy does the hundred meters he's he was one of our fastest runners i was at
46:32
Speaker A
arsenal power no one was you know nobody had more power than emmy you know with his right leg in his and recruiting power quickly emmy was the strongest right physically strong he's and he jumps when we measured his
46:49
Speaker A
jump uh his jump and his power was equal to manuel neuer so you know the modern goalkeeper now the days of the the thin weakling and and going in gold those days are finished i i see it yeah i totally agree i see it
47:08
Speaker A
like the strongest tallest most powerful defender that a club recruits at a young age will just wear a pair of gloves yeah in the future they'll be a defender first and foremost on the ball and playing out like you say i've seen
47:27
Speaker A
um i've seen alison uh play standing on the edge of the center circle often during a match yes and i see that yeah i see that as the future the the big strong powerful defender will be able to just wear a
47:42
Speaker A
pair of gloves in the future and be out outfield much more than they will in goals and then his reading and his understanding of the game has to be very very quick as well you know he has to be
47:55
Speaker A
able to read when when when the ball is the pressure on the ball is there no pressure on the ball uh reading the body the body uh how he's kicking the ball is he is he going there who's coming into the box who's coming
48:10
Speaker A
there who's coming in far post should i be in this so his actual analysis of the speed of the ball the speed of the run can i come and get that one the speed of him coming in anticipating that one so
48:24
Speaker A
their brains the brains of all top players is very very quick very quick understanding of football from all angles you know and to be honest i do a lot of this now in japan you know a lot and i do a lot of
48:42
Speaker A
training about training about the speed of the ball and and scanning looking to see where the dangers coming from taking information from the game so all these all these things that we're talking about andrew is the modern game
48:58
Speaker A
you know yeah it's the future of football exactly well if pep guardiola could have 11 outfield players and not have to have someone in goal i think he would do that any every day of the week wouldn't he and i think that's
49:11
Speaker A
the way it's going potentially i'm not saying that he's not gonna have a goalkeeper but i think i'm thinking back to the days when i was in the playground playing rush goldbly yeah and that's and that could be a
49:22
Speaker A
simple more advanced way that pep guardiola is actually thinking nowadays of using his goalkeeper as a defender first and foremost but i think you know you know when you when you see allinson they won the champions league with
49:36
Speaker A
allinson in goal allison becker the brazilian number one because of the crucial saves he makes you know not all the good distribution he's got to be excellent distribution and a great goalkeeper you know yeah it's it's both you know yeah
49:54
Speaker A
and the the way that i think those two things join together is what and brave you know bravery is going to be a big part because you know there's not a lot of players now who put their bodies on the
50:10
Speaker A
line go great goalkeepers put their body on the line to keep you in games so absolutely please putting all these you know when you when you're looking for someone to play at the top level and you're looking for
50:23
Speaker A
somebody like for for arsenal or you're looking for someone at liverpool or manchester city or chelsea you you have to look for someone who's special you know i i think goalkeeping is very special it's a very special position it's a great position because
50:43
Speaker A
you you you you have to have you have your brain must think very quickly and it must examine three things at one time and analyze three things at one time and read the game at speeds quicker than sometimes the outfield
50:59
Speaker A
players you know yeah definitely and then you've got the physical side of the the physical thing can you recruit all that power very quickly to get to the ball you know or you have to recruit all that power to
51:13
Speaker A
get your body horizontal to make an unbelievable save so this all these things that you need to to is you know you don't find in a lot of people you know that's why the great great goalkeepers now you know this
51:31
Speaker A
all over the world now it's very very very few you know you know this exactly but and that means the price of them are going to go up and up and up and up you know i i totally agree i totally
51:44
Speaker A
agree i think um i think now you know when you you're looking at the top keepers now in the in in the premiership and and i've you know what the ones that have impressed impressed me obviously alison becker at liverpool i think
52:02
Speaker A
uh a very good goalkeeper you know he's the brazilian number one and um his distribution he's reading of the game his anticipation and he's shot stopping is very very good edison for man city number two for brazil also you know
52:19
Speaker A
excellent distribution um very good goalkeeper very good goalkeeper in all even making saves and you know mendy who is just going to jump but you know mandy was only 20 million he's the same as as emmy martin is
52:35
Speaker A
and both goalkeepers for me uh you know i if i talk about the top keepers in the premiership i mentioned emmy and mendy within that within the the top four goalkeepers in the premiership yeah i do as well
52:50
Speaker A
exactly i'm really conscious now of uh your time i've i've chat to you for ages actually i'm really enjoying it i must i know you must be very busy man i've got a couple one question here in the chat here as
53:03
Speaker A
well saying um from one of my good friends melvin marks and could you ask uh jerry if he always wanted to be a goalkeeper growing up and if so who is your role model yeah growing up um i always wanted to be a goalkeeper
53:20
Speaker A
and you know it was easy peter shelton and gordon banks i mean gordon banks to start with for me i loved gordon banks you know he had that cat like he could spring you know he stayed in the air he made
53:34
Speaker A
saves he came for crosses you know and he had a great personality and you know i studied uh he was in at leicester at the time he was playing for for leicester he went from sorry he was at stoke city at the time and um
53:52
Speaker A
uh peter shelton was at leicester and um and then schultz went on to to stoke city later on but i remember studying banksy and his work ethic was unbelievable i mean banksy was always the first one on the training
54:07
Speaker A
ground the last one off most days and um he worked and worked and worked at his game and then schultz came along and and and um worked you know schultz would do things like he'd do an army assault course every pre-season you
54:25
Speaker A
know to build up power you know so these were and these were goalkeepers in front of their they were 10 years ahead of their time you know because yeah they knew they needed all that power to keep to
54:41
Speaker A
keep their teams in games and to have great performances you know definitely the pitches at that time were disgraced remember there's no grass on the pitches then yeah and then we had some i mean and then ray clements came along ray clements great
55:00
Speaker A
reader of the game i used to love watching ray holding a high line and reading things and coming to to protect the back and and liverpool used to hold the high line and ray clements was the sweeper behind
55:13
Speaker A
so ray was probably advanced as well with the modern goalkeeper of today you know yeah i was reading things early and stopping things happening and and playing out of his goal so um and then and then you look at pat
55:28
Speaker A
jennings probably the most natural goalkeeper i've ever seen in my life he he'd be catching things with one hand he had the biggest hand you've ever seen he's on one v once and he'd just fall back and just catch the ball with one hand or
55:41
Speaker A
kick him away you know yeah so you know goal keeping and then i i still remember lev yashin always wore black came in had a massive present presence in the goal and comfort crosses for fun you know and
55:56
Speaker A
was very athletic but a very big goalkeeper he was very tall about six foot four i had a big presence and very strong you know so you know going through how the game has gone and the evolution of the game um
56:11
Speaker A
yeah i'm i put it like this your question was i i love goalkeepers i love being a goalkeeper i love goalkeepers it's a special position i think it's a great position and i think it's it's the best position on the pitch for
56:27
Speaker A
me you know in a position where you can keep your team in games and you know saving penalties keeping you you know making penalty saves and winning things is is fantastic 100 percent yeah and i'm going to finish off with one
56:42
Speaker A
final question and i think it's obviously a very very poignant one for you for when you joined arsenal have you seen the trailer for the arsene wenger invincible programme no i haven't seen it i haven't seen it but i'm looking forward to seeing it is
56:59
Speaker A
it good yeah i mean the the trailer itself uh just gets your hair standing up on your on your arms um so i mean being the season that you joined arsenal yes it must be something that you're going to be looking forward to watching
57:15
Speaker A
surely oh and you know what can i have one last question i mean just very very briefly and i like because this question could go on for ages however can you just give us a brief uh sort of idea of what it was
57:28
Speaker A
like working with uh arsene wenger during those those years well i'm still in touch with arsene i still speak to arson i still text arsene i went for dinner at his house a year after we i left um i've seen him in japan we go and i
57:46
Speaker A
went to the hotel we sit and have breakfast together and we we talk we text each other so i'm still in touch with arsen i have the uttermost respect for a guy from a to z in football everything you know and i mean a to z in
58:03
Speaker A
building stadiums in blood tests in analysis uh the gain knowledge of the game a to z and patience and allows people to he he builds a very positive atmosphere so people can grow and become great players and i've learned so much
58:24
Speaker A
from arsene being part of arsenal i think arsenal is the biggest and best club in london it's a classy club it's an elegant club so being part of arsenal and hybri in the marble step the marble halls and then moving to the emirates
58:42
Speaker A
it's for me my life you know it was the it's the greatest thing i've ever done and i'm the happiest i had 15 fantastic years there and i only speak about it with uh joy you know and my son my son used
58:58
Speaker A
to run around the pitch with arsene and at the end of seasons and uh he now he loves arsenal you know every time he looks for all the results and he's a big arsenal fan so arsenal is still a big part and i i watch every
59:15
Speaker A
game i watch every game and i study the game and so it's still a part of my uh love for the club yeah fantastic we're getting a lot of great comments of people saying really informative enjoyable they've really
59:29
Speaker A
enjoyed you being on i mean hopefully one day we can get you back on again and have a bit more of a follow-up because i think there's so many more questions i'd love to talk to you about um i think it's been brilliant and i
59:42
Speaker A
can't thank you enough for coming on it's been a lot longer than i said it probably would so thank you for your time as well jerry no problem andrew it's a pleasure and um good luck good luck to you and good luck to arsenal for
59:54
Speaker A
the rest of the season thank you thank you ever so much and obviously right back at you as well with regards to your season as well and i really hope to one day see your your son in the arsenal
60:05
Speaker A
academy coming through um maybe that'd be fantastic i'll definitely keep a lookout for his name okay and thank you as well and your results going forward thank you and take care and thank you to everyone watching bye andrew take care thank you
60:21
Speaker A
bye bye bye
