Speaker A

I [music] can see what's mine now. Finding out [singing] looking through the eyes of love.

Speaker A

[music] [music] Yeah. [music] Yeah. [music] Clueless walking down the street. Sunglasses try to beat us. Last night we hit it hard. My head is spinning.

Speaker A

[music] Sun is shining. Revelation. Right here is where I want to be. It's such [music] a perfect day. So what's a girl say when everything is cool? Except I'm acting like a fool. I got you on my mind and the rest of me is fine to the

Speaker A

stupid things you do. Just sit [music] back, enjoy the view. It's a perfect day.

Speaker A

[music] It's a perfect such a perfect day. Hey, Dad. Dad, I'm back. Hey, I'm starving.

Speaker A

What you doing? Next year is planting. Trying to figure out what's the best cash crop. Trying to Every year it gets harder to outsmart the market.

Speaker A

So, how was the pond? It was good. [laughter] Um, listen. I've been thinking about graduation.

Speaker A

No, I haven't. Yeah, I know that. We got to start thinking about what college is.

Speaker A

Okay. And what does that have to do with college? Nick goes to college and he's home for a pickup game tonight at the rink.

Speaker A

When you go to college, you're supposed to stay there until you darn well graduate. Do you want to come? I think I'm going to try to get a little practice in beforehand.

Speaker A

Well, I wouldn't miss it for the world. Here I go and again Starbucks. You got to pull tight.

Speaker A

There he is. Nick Peterson, last year's Eastern MVP. Too bad nobody saw it. Ah, who cares? Back from Michigan State for a potential career-ending injury in a piece pickup game for his boyfriend.

Speaker A

You still skate like a girl or what? Yeah. And and and you know now we actually wear dresses at Michigan State.

Speaker A

[laughter] That's my boy. I think you want a coffee. Yeah. I got to show these boys a thing or two.

Speaker A

Bring your homework. Do you hear? You kidding me? You learning anything besides hockey? Uh no, 'cause I'm going pro.

Speaker A

Hey, so is that a double or triple you just did? Triple. What? All right, everybody. The ice. Everybody off the ice. Thank you. And you're all welcome to stick around for the Let's go. We need everybody off the ice right

Speaker A

now. Thank you. The Iowa Invitational Junior Championships are in Cedar Rapids this weekend. I saw the posters for it. You want to go?

Speaker A

I want you to sign up. Yeah, right. You've been skating since you can walk.

Speaker A

You're darn good. Maybe it's time you showed someone. What's the point? The point is I know my sister. She always thought you could do more than skate around that darn pond. Compete. I just do it for fun now.

Speaker A

We could use the program we used for Christmas. The one your mother played. But I don't want to do it.

Speaker A

Oh, come on. It'll give me a chance to cheer you up for a change. [laughter] Hey.

Speaker A

Hey. Come on. All right, let's play. Come on. All right, let's go. Marco. Polo.

Speaker A

Marco. Oh, Marco. Paulo. Come on. You'll have fun if you go. You're going to be at school, though.

Speaker A

I know, but I'll come back. Marco. Polo. You took it off. Hey, you're going.

Speaker A

No. Yes, you are. Hey. Yes, you are. Give it back. You're going to regret it if you don't go.

Speaker A

All right. Yeah. Haven't been to Cedar Rapids in a while. That's my girl. [screaming] Ladies and gentlemen, there is someone very special here today. Let's give a big Cedar Rapids welcome to Olympic silver medalist Aiden Reynolds.

Speaker A

[applause] [music] Hey, how you doing? I'm all right. Are you having fun yet? I'm nervous. Keep breathing.

Speaker A

She's really good. [music] [music] [applause] [applause] Scores for Carol Sanders. Technical 39.92, components 38.88 for a composite score of 78.80.

Speaker A

[applause] Our next competitor representing Ice Castle Skating Club in Windsor, Iowa, is Lexi Winston.

Speaker A

That explains her outfit. Have fun. Okay. Hey, I love you. I love you, too.

Speaker A

[applause] [music] [snorts] [music] [music] I didn't know she was going to skate to this piece.

Speaker A

[music] [applause and music] [applause] Heat. Heat. [applause and music] Heat. [applause and music] Heat.

Speaker A

[applause] [applause] [cheering] Your mom would have been so scores for Miss Winston. Technical 30.25 components 41.76 for a combined total of 72.01.

Speaker A

They're a wonderful effort nonetheless. You coached that new girl, right? Carrie something. We're no longer working together.

Speaker A

I take it you haven't competed much. She was great. I didn't say she wasn't, but everything she was doing was level one. With the right training, hard work, and a higher profile, I think you could be a serious

Speaker A

competitor. I just ski for fun. It showed. Think how much fun you'd have if you won.

Speaker A

She did just fine. She could do better. You owe it to yourself. There's a whole world out there.

Speaker A

Would it be nice to see how far you can go? Mr. Winston, your daughter's a natural on the ice. I'm guessing she's a bit late in the game, but she's also got the strength and poise the younger girls

Speaker A

don't have. She can land a triple. That's good. Biscane today is a total package. Athleticism, emotion, and glamour. Lexi's got two out of three.

Speaker A

That may sound cynical, but that's just the way it is. You really want to coach me?

Speaker A

Regionals are coming up. There's barely enough time to train, but I'm willing to give it a shot.

Speaker A

Are you? It's your life. Thank you. Thank you. You train at Boston Memorial Rink, right?

Speaker A

I do. If I don't hear from you by tomorrow, I'll move on. My dad will be all by himself.

Speaker A

Dad's a sharp guy. I think he'll survive. Look, I got to get going. He hasn't been alone since my mom died.

Speaker A

You planning on living with your dad for the rest of your life? What about us?

Speaker A

I'll tell you one thing. I'm not moving in with him. I'm serious. You and me were like a rock. And plus, I'm going to be at school most of the time. Which reminds me, if I don't get going right now, I'm

Speaker A

going to drive off the road. But you'll miss me too much. Maybe. You know, I always miss you when you're out of sight. We'll see each other in a few weeks when you come down for our first game.

Speaker A

It was kind of exciting. You and me. Famous Redwing star and world. Hey, Olympic champion. figure skater fast.

Speaker A

What the heck? Oh my god, you are dead. You are dead. You must be Lexi. You're going to have to work on closing your mouth when entering a hotel. Sorry. It's just that I know it's just all too much. Just

Speaker A

wait. We are part of the hotel, but we're kind of off by ourselves. Everybody's really nice.

Speaker A

Hi. But um you're the new girl, so it's her. Hey. Oh, please. Everybody has their own room. We [music] eat in the slum section of one of the hotel coffee shops. And don't even think about escaping into town for a good

Speaker A

dinner because you're going to be working all the time. We have a workout room, aerobics, strength, stretch. Big deal for Mr. Reynolds.

Speaker A

Does everyone here train with him? No. There are several coaches that use Boston Club as a base.

Speaker A

So, what's the big deal about Carrie Turner? You don't get a lot of news in Idaho, huh? Iowa.

Speaker A

Same difference. Carrie jumped ship last week to training Frank Carol right after she took first in the Colorado Invitational. Coach is pretty bent up about it, so I'm not sure I'd bring it up. We have two full-time physical

Speaker A

trainers. They also do massage, so if you pull something, it gets fixed fast. Not a lot of wasted time.

Speaker A

Dance and ballet. 1 and two and three and four and five. Hey, look, I know you're from Ohio or somewhere, but this is real life, okay?

Speaker A

You want to do something, you want to get somewhere, this is your chance. Don't blow it up.

Speaker A

[music] You got to get there. Get your man. Get your man. Peterson, get on him.

Speaker A

[screaming] Turn it back up. Turn it back up. Nice hustle. Coach is only as good as his best skater. Watch out on the back.

Speaker A

He needs a new star and he's hoping somebody he's working with here is going to emerge. Emerge?

Speaker A

Yeah. Start to show she can take them all the way. All the way where?

Speaker A

Nationals, worlds. Seriously. Morning ladies. Welcome to Boston. Let's get to it. Hey, Lexi. See those girls out there, those coac

Speaker A

skating here after regionals. [snorts] She's replacing Carrie. And we're off. That's cute. Hey, you. So, I scored two goals today.

Speaker A

Really? Yeah. That's awesome. How's it going, Arthur? Good. It's kind of strange, but it's great.

Speaker A

It just takes a little getting used to, you know. Mr. Reynolds is a really great coach, though. I had no idea I could skate like this. both on the way up.

Speaker A

So, uh, I'm really looking forward to my first game so I can finally see you.

Speaker A

Tell you the truth, I actually might not stay at school too long. If everything goes the way it looks, I might get drafted early.

Speaker A

That's great. Nick Peterson, I miss you. and three and four and five and Okay, those turns need to be clean and deeper, more upper body. Come on, more drama.

Speaker A

You need to be at least level three if you want to be competitive. You've got regionals in less than 3 weeks. I want you going over these sequences every waking moment.

Speaker A

Four, five, six, More drama. That's it. That's level three. You got to get there to be in the top four. Otherwise, you don't move on.

Speaker A

Good. Now it's looking better. All right. Okay. Give us uh just go over it one more time. She'll get it.

Speaker A

Hey, it's Lexi. I'm probably skating, but if you leave me a message, I'll call you back.

Speaker A

Hey guys, come here. It's Carrie. Maybe she came back to say goodbye. Just wait here.

Speaker A

Call a break. You should be practicing. Go practice. Go, go, go. What are you doing here? That's the new girl.

Speaker A

Yeah, Lexi Winston. I hear she's competing week after next. See how she is. Talent pool's a little slim these days, huh?

Speaker A

Careful. It's slippery out there. Good luck. Don't worry about it, Lex. It's good work for today. She's all yours.

Speaker A

Excuse me. You've got to create a buzz. I want the whole skating world to know you're a force to be reckoned with. Give to the one. Don't give up. Give to the one.

Speaker A

Don't give up. Give to the one. Don't give up. This is your love. [music] Hey.

Speaker A

Hey. What time is it? I don't know. I'm having a serious affair with your voicemail these days.

Speaker A

I know. I'm sorry. I had a lot of practice and then coach sent me shopping.

Speaker A

Shopping? I guess I can see you can't find time to answer my messages. Well, I'm sorry. I just haven't had time.

Speaker A

What the heck's that noise? I'm getting my hair done. Thought you there to skate, Lex.

Speaker A

But Nick, you know, I don't know. This sounds like bold to me. You know, I got to practice in a couple hours, Lex. Like, I can barely hear you.

Speaker A

What? Yeah, exactly. I got to run. Wait, Nick. [music] We are lipstick and cleats. We are not going home and we are playing for keeps.

Speaker A

We are girls [music] with skinnies. We are concrete and wonderful. I love it. You're beautiful.

Speaker A

You're great. Oh, yeah. There you go. Just one more smile for me. Thank good. Now, spin, turn, pose, smile.

Speaker A

[music] No. Get that out of your face. Okay. Good teeth. Very nice. I think we have it.

Speaker A

Danny. Yes, sir. Yes. Is it awful? Awful? No, he's not awful. Believe me, it is a far cry from anything but beautiful.

Speaker A

This is Lexi Winston, my newest skater. I think she'll make it the sectional. Is the car favorite?

Speaker A

I wish her only the best, but I'm very excited about Miss Winston's regional debut.

Speaker A

Damn. Hey, Shane. You guys made it. Oh, you couldn't have kept us away. Mr.

Speaker A

How you doing? Good, thank you. No. Wow. Bad or good? Who is this incredibly beautiful young woman here?

Speaker A

Really? Yeah. Really? Lexi, hurry. We're up next. Lexi, let's go. Okay. Good luck. Thank you.

Speaker A

She's all uh grown up performance makeup. [applause] [music] [music] Heat. Heat. [music] Heat. [applause] [music] Heat.

Speaker A

[music] [applause] [applause] Yes. Yes. Scores for Miss Turner, technical 63.8, component 64.6 for a combined first place total of 128.4.

Speaker A

Oh, be careful. It's slippery out there. She's trying to rattle you. Well, unraveled enough as it is.

Speaker A

Well, shut it out. You can do this. Hey, Lexi, skate the program and you'll be fine. You're better than she is.

Speaker A

Okay. Our next skater this evening representing the Boston Skating Club, Boston, Massachusetts, Lexi Winston.

Speaker A

[applause] [applause] Heat. Heat. [music] Look at that. Heat. Heat. [music] [music] [music] Heat [music] [music] [music] up here. [music] Heat. Heat.

Speaker A

[music] [music] [music] Heat. [music] [music] Heat. [music] Heat. Heat. [music] [music] Heat. Heat. [applause] [applause] [cheering] [applause] Wow, sweetie.

Speaker A

You were fantastic. [applause] [applause] The scores for Miss Winston, technical 49.15, components 71.18 for a combined total of 120.33, putting her solidly in second place and on her way to section.

Speaker A

How long have you been training with Aiden Reynolds? Where'd you find this gym? Aiden on a pond in Iowa.

Speaker A

You think she has what it takes? What do you think? I think I'd like to do a story on her in skating magazine.

Speaker A

A great You ever pull a stone like that again in your route? What? You don't add, change, or place a jump unless I tell you to. I tell you to do a triple, you do a triple. I don't, you

Speaker A

don't. I I knew I could do it, and I I did it. It was sloppy.

Speaker A

I placed second. Well, you think you know something because you've been doing this a little while? You don't. You need to always skate the program. I have calculated every point and competition is not the time to throw in something

Speaker A

untrained. I'm sorry. This is your job and mine. And if you don't want to do it, you go home with your dad right now.

Speaker A

Please just let me stay. Go. Go say goodbye to your family. Hey, Nick. It's me.

Speaker A

We seem to keep missing each other. busy schedules, but we knew that would happen.

Speaker A

I miss you after regionals seems more than usual. I can't wait to come to your game.

Speaker A

I miss you. I already said that. Um, call me back. Bye. [gasps] [snorts] Lover boy, he scored a goal at practice.

Speaker A

You better not let coach catch you talking on the phone. He wants to hear 150%.

Speaker A

[snorts] I barely talk to him. Yeah, well, barely is better than never, which is how it usually ends up.

Speaker A

We haven't seen each other in so long. With all that's happened, you really miss him that much? What are you talking about?

Speaker A

I never thought I'd make it to sectionals. Maybe I could change my flight. Then I'd only miss a few practice.

Speaker A

Good luck. Hey, it's Lexi. I'm probably skating, but if you leave me a message, I'll call you back.

Speaker A

Hey, uh, I got you a really good seat right by the tunnel, so I'll give you a wave when I come out.

Speaker A

and um look forward to seeing you tomorrow night. What's the matter? Nothing. What? How do you know?

Speaker A

Please. supposed to go to Michigan for Nick's first camp. We've got sectionals coming up.

Speaker A

I'd only miss two days of practice. I thought we had this conversation. [cheering] Truman Elliot, you're up. Change.

Speaker A

Peterson, get in there. Go. [music] That's it, folks. A warm round of applause for another Michigan State victory. Congratulations, D.

Speaker A

Hey, it's me. I'm so sorry. I really wanted to be there. I did everything I could.

Speaker A

I'm sure you did great. You always do. [cheering] So, Miss Winston, do you have a boyfriend?

Speaker A

I do. He's a happy player at Michigan State. Sure. You want them on record?

Speaker A

Why not? I don't know. Something happens between you two. We're fine. I'm sure you are, but a little mystery for you either.

Speaker A

So, uh, have you got your story straight? I'm with Lexi Winston, who can barely contain her excitement. First major competition.

Speaker A

So, doing this well, do you have goals now? Have your goals changed? No one even knew your story. You came in, you had grown up in Iowa, skating on ponds, as you say. Did you dream about a day like this?

Speaker A

It's fun to be recognized. Media darling Lexi Winston is taking the ice skating world by storm.

Speaker A

You know, you always dream about it, but [music] you never really think that it's going to happen.

Speaker A

How do you handle that pressure? Um, I think of it as pressure. I think of it as excitement.

Speaker A

Oh my gosh. page 25. Told you be worth it. This is amazing. This is so cool.

Speaker A

Lexi Winston from Iowa to IO. Wow. [laughter] Did you get the magazine? Yep. You're like a celebrity now.

Speaker A

Kind of am. It's crazy. [snorts] What happened to you? I'm just sore. I have sectionals next weekend.

Speaker A

What about Thanksgiving? Well, I was hoping maybe you could come here to Boston. I thought you were coming here to Michigan.

Speaker A

I can. I have practice. Yes. So do I. Well, I want to see you.

Speaker A

Why does it say you're single? What? The magazine says you're single. That wasn't me. That was Aiden. He said that um I should probably just try to keep us quiet.

Speaker A

Are you kidding me, Lex? Nick, you know what? We knew this was going to be hard, and it it is. It stinks. But we said we would make it work. We said we would make it work.

Speaker A

Yeah. Well, look, it's not working. You know, we haven't seen each other in a really long time, and we haven't talked at all. And every time I do talk to you, you're not even there.

Speaker A

I can't help it. I'm doing the best I can. You can't help being a different person.

Speaker A

I'm trying. Maybe we should just take a break. This isn't working. You keep trying to get inside my head while I keep trying to lose you.

Speaker A

Can't you see I'm hanging back to my life? What I know? Yeah, I'm losing control.

Speaker A

Oh no, my walls are [singing] going to break so close. It's more than I can take. I'm [music and singing] so tired of turning and running away when love just [music] is safe.

Speaker A

I'm strong [music] enough. I've always told myself [singing] I never want to need somebody [music and singing] else.

Speaker A

But I've already fallen from that floor. So I'm dropping my guard [music] chance at my heart.

Speaker A

Oh no, [singing] my walls are [music] going to break so close. It's more than I can [music] take. So t [singing] turning around and know you will love just us everything you want but it's everything you need. It's not always happy. But

Speaker A

it's not the endless [music] way taking so long. No longer finally seeing [music] your [singing] love is worth the risk.

Speaker A

You all right? I'm fine. You sure? Yeah. I said I'm fine. Okay. My walls are going to break.

Speaker A

[music] My walls are going to [singing] break so close. [music] It's more than I can take. I'm so [singing] tired of turning it in the way. When love is inside, you're not safe.

Speaker A

So that's it. I didn't get recruited to get my butt kicked for nothing. I'm good enough to play.

Speaker A

Sorry you see it that way. Don't think I'm going to beg you to stick around.

Speaker A

Got a winning team here. So, as far as I can see, you're doing me a favor.

Speaker A

Sit. Are you kidding me? The only way I'm getting on this is if I'm driving.

Speaker A

You know how? I'm from Iowa. Hold on. A new revolution. Stand up for [music] the United [music] [music] Stand up for the new [music and singing] revolution.

Speaker A

Make way for the United Front. No one ever [music] told you life was going to be easy. No one ever told you it was such a boy. You're full of surprises.

Speaker A

You don't know the half of it. Are you concerned about her though as you get ready for sectionals?

Speaker A

I don't think so. I I'm just I can take it in stride and I'm working [music] really hard and I have full confidence going into sectionals. So So you don't feel like you have to look over your shoulder at her?

Speaker A

No, definitely not. Okay, good luck. Thank you very much. [music] [music] Do you think Miss Winston has a shot at national if I didn't?

Speaker A

But do you think she's skating well enough to beat Carrie Turner? I think Miss Winston could beat anyone competing today.

Speaker A

What about regionals? A little bit of beginner's luck, maybe? Uh, no. Pure talent and hard work.

Speaker A

Hey, Lexi, are the rumors true? Is there a romance brewing? I don't comment on my personal life, but thank you.

Speaker A

[music] Facing one of the more interesting challenges in her career, Carrie Turner is delivering the best performance we've seen.

Speaker A

I happen to agree. Now, the unknown element this evening is Lexi Winston, who came in a close second in the regionals, who can possibly top her second place finish here.

Speaker A

Let me tell you something. She is skating absolutely flawlessly this evening. [music] [applause] Our [applause] [applause] next competitor representing Boston Skating Club in Boston, Massachusetts is Lexi Winston.

Speaker A

[applause] [applause] Stay [music] Heat. Heat. Heat. [music] Heat. [music] [music] [music] Heat. [applause] [music] [music] Heat.

Speaker A

Heat [music] up [music] here. [music] [applause] [music] Heat [cheering] up here. [applause] Let's [applause] [cheering] [applause] [cheering] see. [applause] Nice.

Speaker A

Crazy. [applause] The scores for Miss Princeton technical 17.1 components 81.3 for a combined total of 151.4.

Speaker A

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new sectionals champion, Lexi Winston. [applause] [applause] You look amazing.

Speaker A

You okay, Aiden? I'm I'm nervous. But that's just so great. It's all new. Exciting.

Speaker A

Let's get to work. How are you? Good. How are you? Please introduce yourself. Of course, Diane. This is [music] Lexi Winston.

Speaker A

You are just fantastic today. Aiden's lucky to have found you. Lexi, you are as adorable as ever.

Speaker A

Your future is limitless, my dear. Monday morning, your office is 8 a.m. Absolutely. The sky's limit over here.

Speaker A

So much of her time is she really doesn't I want first dibs for a new year's show for next year. You promise me.

Speaker A

You know how I feel about your show, Lenny, but Icecapades is very interesting. You are just darling.

Speaker A

Excuse me. What was that? Can we just go? Honey, do you have any idea who these people are? What they could do for you?

Speaker A

I know him, but he's a big time show producer. If he likes you, you work year round. As long as you can skate. Trust me. Show him that smile of yours. He's going to love you.

Speaker A

Look, you've got maybe a couple good years in this business. Right now, you're an entertainer. We are think I like this.

Speaker A

Can we just go somewhere? Just us. Yeah. Okay, we will. We will. Just give me one minute. Okay. Just talk to this producer and then we'll go. Okay.

Speaker A

Be right back. Hello. Hey, Daddy. Hello, sweetheart. How you doing? Good. No, everything's fine.

Speaker A

Oh, well, sounds like that means we won't be seeing you. Well, we still have a lot to do when Aiden says we have to get ready for nationals.

Speaker A

Daddy, what is it, sweetheart? This might be a funny question, but do you think I'm all right?

Speaker A

Well, no. I think you're the most wonderful person in the world, but I'm not sure that I follow you.

Speaker A

Me neither. So maybe what you need to do is come home, you know, for a little bit and just if only.

Speaker A

I'm sorry I'm not there, Daddy. Yeah, me too. Me, too. Hey, listen. Whatever you, you know, need to do or want to do, I'm I'm there for you. Okay.

Speaker A

Thanks. I'm your dad. I love you, Danny. I love you, too, honey. Talk to you soon.

Speaker A

I didn't know what Who is that? Aiden. Can you say desperate for attention? Excuse me.

Speaker A

Let's see. Let's see. Let's see. Baby, don't move. [crying] Call an ambulance. Somebody call an ambulance.

Speaker A

Why can't [music] I see? I don't I don't remember. Lexi, you bumped your head and I think you've got a you think you've got a concussion. You had an accident.

Speaker A

You took a fall at the lake. Everything's going to be all right. Go back three slices.

Speaker A

Well, her tests are consistent, and that's a good thing. Once these things plateau, it's rare to see an improvement, but this light perception she has will remain.

Speaker A

So, you're saying this is it? There are always miracles, new discoveries. The brain is complex and unpredictable. The fact that she can see some light will certainly help her.

Speaker A

What next? Go home. Help her adjust to being blind. Get back to some sense of normaly. This is going to be a big adjustment for her.

Speaker A

Yeah. And for you. Wheelchair. Wheelchair. I spoke to the press. Still don't understand why it's any of their business.

Speaker A

I told him she broke her arm. The doctors are keeping quiet. That should buy some time. At least until nationals.

Speaker A

And by then they'll be on to other stories. So in the meantime, you can relax and lay low back in Iowa and we'll see what happens.

Speaker A

I can't see. It's over. No. No. The the doctor said there's a chance. A chance?

Speaker A

Are you saying that for me or for you? I don't even know why you're here anymore.

Speaker A

Just leave me alone. It's over. No, no, no, Lexi. It's not over. You love skating and winning.

Speaker A

Nationals are coming and then the season's going to be over and it'll start up again.

Speaker A

You'll find yourself a new skater and she'll win gold for you. That's all you ever wanted.

Speaker A

Please just go, Aiden. Just go. Well, the big question in the figure skating world right now, what happened to Lexi Winston? What we hear is that Lexi broke her arm at a non-competition event, but there seems to be more to it

Speaker A

since it can't be confirmed. There has been no press conference, no calls answered. In fact, Lexi has virtually disappeared from the scene. Mysterious to say the least.

Speaker A

You said it wasn't going to snow, but it sure doesn't feel that way. I wouldn't know.

Speaker A

What's that? Said I wouldn't know. Oh, come on. You can smell it in the air. I know you can.

Speaker A

should have never gone to Boston. Stop listening to your mind tell you what you don't have.

Speaker A

What you should have done is just focus on what's here and right now just trying to feel the ground.

Speaker A

I couldn't be more proud of you. You know that, don't you? All I know is that I'm stuck here in the middle of nowhere in the dark.

Speaker A

Oh, it's very helpful. It's true. Probably be stuck here forever. Listen, before you left here a few months ago, this wasn't nowhere. In fact, it was a place that you had a hard time leaving. Remember that?

Speaker A

Hey there. Welcome home, cutie. Hey, how's your sleep? Okay, good. So, I'm going out in a bit and uh I could use the company.

Speaker A

No thanks. Come on, Lex. Why don't you come out for a bit? asking and Jane to go.

Speaker A

Okay. Hot chocolate with whipped cream. I'm fine. It's beautiful out there today. Colder and cold, but at least it's not windy.

Speaker A

We could go for a walk later. I could use the exercise. No thanks. It's been weeks, honey. The girls have been asking about you.

Speaker A

What did you tell them? Nothing. But everyone's going to find out sooner or later.

Speaker A

Where is she? In her room. You're down here watching television. She's upstairs in her room doing what?

Speaker A

I don't know. I've read to her. I've talked to her. You know what is the point of you coming over here if she's going to be sitting upstairs by herself?

Speaker A

I can't make her do anything. She's dying up there. Then you do something. I thought I was Yeah. Why don't you come over?

Speaker A

Okay. All right. I've had enough of this. Come on. Let's go. Dad, come on. Let's go. Dad, your mother would be ashamed of us.

Speaker A

You're sitting around here feeling sorry for yourself for so long. The fact that I actually helped you. Come on, let's go.

Speaker A

Leave me alone. It's lonier in this house now than when you were in Boston. Dad, come on. Let's go.

Speaker A

Where? Where are we going? Anywhere but here. Dad, we're not going to sit and rot in this house. Come on, Dad.

Speaker A

Dad, I'm not ready for this. Slippery. That's why you're wearing skates. Is the ice thick enough?

Speaker A

We're going to find out soon enough. Dad, just remember when your mom and I used to bring you out here.

Speaker A

You know, you weren't too interested in walking, but you love the feel of the ice. You loved it.

Speaker A

My legs are tired. Yeah. Well, come on. It's just another another minute. That's it. One foot in front of the other. You can remember.

Speaker A

Dad. Dad. I'm just not ready. When did you become such a wuss? Nick, what are you doing here?

Speaker A

You know, I'm I'm I'm getting kind of tired and my legs are my legs are my legs are kind of beaten. It's cold. Why don't you could you help me out here?

Speaker A

No. Dad. Dad, I'll come with you. You leave me out here by myself? Huh?

Speaker A

I said, Dad, just let me Hey, I got you. I'm fine. I said I'm fine.

Speaker A

It's It's It's my skates. It's my skates. I just Yeah, it's got to be your skates.

Speaker A

Can you help me get them off? No. Get up. Get up. Get up. Stop it.

Speaker A

All this time, Lex kept thinking to myself, she's home and she gets cabin fever.

Speaker A

Guess she really doesn't want to see me. Maybe she figured you wouldn't want to see her after what happened.

Speaker A

[sighs and gasps] Maybe he thought that he caused it. He couldn't admit it to himself.

Speaker A

Nick, I'm right here. Help me. [snorts] I'm right here. Don't let me go. I'm right here.

Speaker A

See? Look. Look. [snorts] You can stand on your own. You okay? [panting] You used to fall the time.

Speaker A

I can't see anything. Just follow my voice. Okay. Do you think that maybe we could try this again?

Speaker A

Skating. Skating. What do you mean? Are you sure that no one's going to be here?

Speaker A

Jane said the girls are coming in at 10:00 and we'll be out before then.

Speaker A

Still tie up your skates. Now all I have to do is skate. So good.

Speaker A

If you're going to skate, we got to figure out a way for you to see the walls.

Speaker A

That's a good idea. Except I'm blind. I know what I mean is is you're able to see light and shadow. So maybe you can use that to get a feel for the rink.

Speaker A

See, there you go. That's good. You starting to get a sense of where the wall is now?

Speaker A

Sort of. All right. Good. Nick, you're fine. Nick, turn. Turn up. You okay? Now I know why you guys are so much padding.

Speaker A

Skate toward me and count out loud. 1,00 2 1 3 1 4 You're halfway.

Speaker A

5 1 6 20 ft 10 five. Stop. Good. No, this is too fast. You got 10 ft. There you go. Yeah, you're going to turn on your own. Good.

Speaker A

Come here. Cut towards center ice. [snorts] Hey, if you can bow and spread eagle, you should be able to tricet spin.

Speaker A

Fine. Now, don't tell me. Look at that. Here, skate toward me. What was that? Another blind joke.

Speaker A

Hey, try a jump. [music] No. Just get some air. What's the worst that could happen?

Speaker A

Well, I could fall on my butt, hit my head, and go death. How's that?

Speaker A

Hand me a stick and a puck, too. Here. Here you go. Okay. And uh let me know when I'm at the center of this blue line. Okay.

Speaker A

Okay. Blue line. of gravity that comes when the heart is [music] full. Woohoo! I knew it.

Speaker A

I knew what it was. Come with me. Want to try something? What are we doing?

Speaker A

You'll see. [music] Follow me. We're better off in the rink. No, give it a shot. I don't even know where the edges are.

Speaker A

Sure you do. Come on, I'll start you. Keep talking. Hey, don't don't try to see.

Speaker A

I mean, if you can't see, maybe, you know, making the effort to [music] do that is just getting in the way of using something else.

Speaker A

Like what? The sound when I slam into the boards. No, like your memory. Just close your eyes. Just picture it in your head.

Speaker A

Lex, we've been skating on this pond our whole lives. Nothing's changed. It's the same shape, the same dimensions.

Speaker A

Come on. You've done this blindfolded before. What's the difference? I could cheat before. It's like lacing up your skates.

Speaker A

You know, if you think about it too much and you get all tangled up. If you just do it, then it's second nature.

Speaker A

There you go. You're approaching the middle. You're about a third of the way to the end.

Speaker A

Don't tell me. Okay. Okay. Where am I now? You just told me not to tell you.

Speaker A

I know where you are. Come on. Where do you think you are? By the stream outlet. Yes.

Speaker A

Look who's showing off. Huh? What? Watch the edge. 10 ft. Good. Come on. Come towards me.

Speaker A

You landed it. You okay? Yeah. Yeah. That was incredible. [laughter] I felt like that even when I could see.

Speaker A

You felt it. Yeah, it just kind of happened. How'd it look? Incredible. [laughter] It's good to see you smiling.

Speaker A

She ready yet? You should have some coffee. No, thanks. We got to get going.

Speaker A

Oh, come on. It's not going to kill you. Hey, I got to tell you, she is um you know, I mean, I think you pulled her out of her funk and that jump, you know, that she tried. I mean, you give her

Speaker A

another couple of weeks and that was a heck of a thing. She could do it once, she could do it again.

Speaker A

Well, I guess that means you're not planning on going any easier on her. Oh, she's tough. She can handle it.

Speaker A

If you can just believe that you're on the pond, you can do it. Not promising anything.

Speaker A

Pretend the stream lit enough to your left and go for it. Yes, you did it.

Speaker A

[laughter] [snorts] Okay. Okay. You're skating beautifully. Nick. Nick. Yeah. [gasps] I'm so proud of you.

Speaker A

Hey, coach. Was hoping you might have a minute. Made a mistake. Wish you could see the sunset. Lex, I'd rather see your face.

Speaker A

I miss you, Nick. I know you're right here, but I still miss you. I'm glad you got to see me ski at sectionals. I mean, it's too bad it's all over though. The skating part, I mean, not the other stuff.

Speaker A

Maybe it doesn't have to be. Yeah, right. Hey, you earned a spot at nationals.

Speaker A

I checked. You're still registered. You checked? Yeah, that guy called [snorts] about your music.

Speaker A

You can do it. Have you been thinking about this? It it it wouldn't work. Max, I'm serious.

Speaker A

So am I. It's ridiculous. Come on. It's not that crazy. I It's a little bit crazy, but why not?

Speaker A

Well, it's one thing for her to skate with you on the ice. She's skating great on her own. What difference does it make where she skates?

Speaker A

It's a big difference. Hey, she landed a triple. She's skating as well as ever.

Speaker A

I don't have a program and I don't have a coach. Well, what about Jane?

Speaker A

I could try, I suppose. I don't know. Do you trust me? Sure, I do, but it's ridiculous.

Speaker A

She can do it. She skated well enough at sectionals to win. She beat out everyone in the middle of this country. She qualified for nationals.

Speaker A

But they'll pity me. Yeah, they they would if they knew. They will. I don't know how they couldn't.

Speaker A

The girls in the rink have seen you skate. They don't know. Give yourself a chance to prove what?

Speaker A

That it was all worth it. Blind or not. If she could do this, she could do anything.

Speaker A

Wow. This feels big. It's just like ours. Well, we've got as much time as we want between 1 and 4 in the morning for the next few days.

Speaker A

All right. Just like home. We'll count off the length and width dimensions, etc. And you'll enter from the center end.

Speaker A

So, I just come straight out. Yeah. And if we start you off right, you'll be fine. It'll be the same count. It's really just about balance and instinct.

Speaker A

There you go. Just come come towards center 10 ft. Five. You're here. Good. You'll start facing the entrance.

Speaker A

There you go. And the judges will reveal right over here to your left. 25 10 5 Hey, that a girl.

Speaker A

Today's national championship has attracted skating royalty. Michelle Quan, fivetime world champion and ninetime US national champion as well as Sandra. [applause] [music] Carrie Turner is skating beautifully at this point in her career. She's in great position for the World Championships and

Speaker A

making [music] the Olympic team next year if she can avoid injury. Lexi Wow. You You look How are you? I mean, does this mean you can Wow. You can't tell. It's amazing.

Speaker A

Eden, this wasn't your fault. You were my responsibility. I was my responsibility. But I want you to know that I appreciate everything you did.

Speaker A

It was all worth it. It was It was good seeing it, Lexi. No one knows.

Speaker A

How would they wants to keep it that way? Kick butt out there. I'm beautiful.

Speaker A

[music] [applause] [cheering] practice. And this season, she seems to have come from nowhere and then she disappeared and now she's back. Well, since sectionals, everybody's been talking about Lexi. The crowd adores her, and there's something real special about her

Speaker A

skating. There's a puress, there's an honesty, and she's able to emotionally connect with every single person in the audience.

Speaker A

Our next competitor representing Ice Castle Skating Club in Windsor, Iowa is Lexi Winston. [applause] She certainly skates with joy and freedom and love and it seems to her it doesn't matter about winning or losing but enjoying what she does.

Speaker A

But the question is is she capable of performing like that here now. Just coming fresh from an injury, having absolutely no experience. Can she do it now when it counts?

Speaker A

Well, I guess we'll soon find out. [applause] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] Heat. Heat.

Speaker A

[music] Heat. Heat. [snorts] [music] Heat. [music] Heat. Heat [music] up [music] [music] here. [music] [music] Heat up here.

Speaker A

Speaker A

[cheering] Heat. [cheering] Heat. [cheering] Yeah. Heat. [applause and cheering] [applause] Hey, [laughter] you I Thought you'd never come.

Speaker A

We forgot about [laughter] the bears. Think they know now. Come on. [applause] [cheering] Don't let this feeling.

Speaker A

It's everything I am. Everything I want to be. I can see what's finding out what's true.

Speaker A

since I found [singing] you. Looking through the eyes of love. Now I can see the stars.

Speaker A

I can see my lights as it comes up. [music] Shining out reaching out to touch [singing] you.

Speaker A

I [music] can feel so much [singing] since [snorts] I found [singing] [music] you. Looking through the eyes of love.

Speaker A

Knowing you're beside me. [singing] I'm all right. Please don't let this [music] feeling in.

Speaker A

Speaker A

[singing] Now I do believe that even in a storm [music] will find some [singing] light.

Speaker A

Knowing you're beside me. Now I can take the time. I can see my life as it comes up. Shining now.
