and you assume they are. But there is a catch you cannot see. The dishwasher only sprays across surfaces it can reach, and it simply cannot get inside a narrow straw up into the rubber valve of a sippy cup lid or into the tight groove

where a travel mug gasket sits. Those are exactly the warm, damp, dark little spaces that grow black mold, and people drink right through them every day. Pull the rubber gasket out of your travel mug lid and look at the channel underneath
