Space is such an interesting element, and I am not referring to this or that, but rather the area of one or more rooms that are inside a house or building. One thing that I find really fascinating about our job as interior designers is that we get to work with three-dimensional spaces, and we decide what to do with them. But the real challenge is to know how to make the most of these spaces. For this, you need to know the two subcategories of space. Positive space refers to the space that will be filled with objects. These types of objects can be either architectural elements, or they can also be decorative items such as furniture or just decorative pieces that, as interior designers, we sometimes choose to incorporate into a space. The negative space is the space that is to be left empty. So both types of space are necessary to bring balance to a room.

You don't want a design space that is going to feel too overcrowded, but you also don't want to design anything that's going to feel too bare and plain. A misconception that a lot of people have is that they think that negative space is bad, and maybe this is due to the word negative. But actually, using negative space is really one of the keys to creating a room where your eyes can have a little bit of a rest from all the objects that are within it.

[Music] Guys, line is such an important element of design, and the thing is that we sometimes forget about this element and we forget to implement it into our spaces. Over the years, I have come to realize that the line element is one of my favorites, and the way that I found this is because I have some inspiration images that I have gathered, and I realized that there is a common denominator in all of them, and that is the line element. Now, you gotta be very careful when you want to use the line element because different types of lines will reflect different types of emotions and sensations, and they'll evoke different feelings within your interior space.

[Music] For example, using horizontal lines will evoke a sense of stability. So just imagine a line that is horizontal. It feels very calm and relaxing, and this is the feeling that you are trying to reflect when you are using this type of element. Horizontal lines are also used when you want to make a room feel longer and wider. So if you're working with a small room and you want to create that illusion of the room being a little bit wider or longer, you can use this type of lines. You can also use lines in a way of directing people to a focal point or through hallways and between spaces. Our eyes always tend to follow the path of the line. So if you are working with a space where you want people to follow a specific path, for example going through different rooms of that space, you can also use the element of line.

Vertical lines evoke feelings of strength and grandiosity. In terms of functionality, they make space appear taller, and they are typically implemented in entries and also in social areas where you probably want to give the illusion of the room being an important space or also of that room having a higher ceiling. Why am I doing this? Dynamic lines are either diagonal, zigzag, or curved lines, and they are typically used for very large rooms or even for staircases. These lines reflect energy and movement, and our eyes tend to look at them for a longer period of time.

Light is truly one of the most important elements of interior design because without light, the other elements of design wouldn't be visible to our eyes. So I am sure that you are familiar with the different types of light, which are natural lighting and artificial lighting. So as the word says, natural light comes from the sun, and artificial lighting comes from fixtures that are man-made. There are a million types of artificial sources of lighting. Now, of course, the more daylight and the more natural light that you have in your interior space, the better the space will be. So this is why today architects and designers are always aiming to have the most amount of natural daylight, and this is why they design these big, big windows. It's not only for aesthetic reasons, but it's also for health reasons and for sustainable reasons. But we also need artificial light for spaces where natural daylight is just not possible or is limited, and also for nighttime. So artificial lighting is divided into different categories. These ones are general lighting, task lighting, accent lighting, and decorative lighting. I can make a dedicated video on lighting if that's something that you would like because that's a big, huge, large topic, and I will not be able to cover it in this video. So let me know in the comments down below.

Form refers to the form or shape of a room or to the shape or the form of the elements within that room. Got it? And it is very important to remember that form is three-dimensional, so it is very important to know how to use it correctly because it can make a very big impact within our interior space. Implementing form and tuning space can make a very remarkable impact, and I would say that you have to be very careful because implementing too many different forms can break the harmony of a space. So probably what I would do is I would choose a form that is going to be the most important one or the most predominant form in the space, and I would repeat it in minor objects or things that are smaller or different sizes but keeping the same form. I hope this is making sense, guys.

Color is one of the most complex elements, and it's also very important. I know that I'm saying every element is important, but it truly is. But color is so tricky, and it is so powerful at the same time. Using different colors can make your space appear larger, smaller, taller, and what's the opposite of taller? Shorter. Yeah, and shorter too. Also narrower, wider. It's so powerful. It can literally change your mood, and it can affect your emotions. Why do you think that all fast food chains have red and yellow? Because these two colors open your appetite. So there is this very important concept that all interior designers should know or research about, which is studying the psychology of color, and it basically talks about how color can stimulate different physical and psychological responses in your body. There is a book that I highly recommend you look at if you want to understand more about the world of color, so I will leave that link down in the description if you want to check it out.

The element of texture is actually very interesting because the user of the space gets to experience these textures not only by seeing them but also by touching them. So I feel like this completes the whole experience of being inside and feeling an interior space. When I am designing, I always try to remember that interior design is really all about layers and layers of texture. Texture makes a room feel comfy and cozy and homey. Have you ever walked into a hotel room and it feels so comfortable to be at? It's because they use so many textures on the ground, on the drapery, on the bed. It is all textures that enhance the customer experience. So this is an element that can never be overlooked, and it is actually overlooked a lot of times. This is why sometimes we have these spaces that feel too cold and empty. So texture is not only your cushions, but it can also be your furniture, your sofas, your carpet, your drapes, your curtains, your shutters. You can implement textures in so many ways, and it's truly going to make a big change.

your carpet your grapes your curtains your shutters you can Implement Textures in so many ways and it's truly going to make a big change in your space pattern is an element that it's linked to the principle of repetition I made a
09:52
Speaker A
video on the principles of interior design I will leave a link up here if you want to check that out so pattern is a design uh created by the use of repetitive elements pattern is typically found in wallpapers rocks Fabrics
10:07
Speaker A
furnishings and something to consider is the size of the pattern in relationship to the size of the area or of the room that you are going to be putting that pattern you don't want to use a pattern that it's too big or it's out of
10:20
Speaker A
proportion out of scale in relationship to your wall or to your flooring whatever you are using it for and you should be careful about the patterns that you use because different patterns are for different interior design styles so if you have a modern design you want
10:39
Speaker A
to use a pattern that uses straight lines and that reflects your interior design Style [Music] so I'm gonna now give you some tips uh to truly Master the elements of design the first tip would be to look everywhere look at magazines try to
10:58
Speaker A
understand what elements are in certain rooms because every interior designer uses the elements of design so if you pay close attention to other interior spaces whether that's from the web or from magazines from books or anywhere you will understand how the elements are
11:18
Speaker A
being used and this can be a very solid inspiration for you now when you feed your eyes with this type of inspiration you will also find that you are drawn to certain elements more than others and that is totally fine that's actually
11:32
Speaker A
perfect because you will start to Define your interior design Style and what are the elements that you like to use the most probably you will be drawn to spaces that are monochromatic while other people may be drawn to spaces that
11:47
Speaker A
are very colorful and they have have a lot of texture within them another thing that you want to do is to familiarize yourself with all the elements and I know I've talked about them today but what I'm trying to say is actually go to
11:58
Speaker A
furniture stores fill all the textures get to know all the textures that there are out there different types of materials go to paint shops see all the colors different finishes go to lighting stores see what they have all the
12:13
Speaker A
different types of lighting that you can use I would recommend that you always take pictures take notes and ask for information and this will really make you not only a better designer but it'll make the design process easier the more
12:28
Speaker A
information you know the easier you will be able to design and the third tip would be that whenever you are on this date where you selected all your elements and all your materials or whatever elements of design you have
12:41
Speaker A
decided to use I try to always put them on a 3D model and try to visualize or even hand render a sketch of how that's going to look like I don't know a lot of designers do not take the time to create
12:55
Speaker A
rendered drawings either manual or digital it doesn't matter and this can actually be very tricky because if you do not see how these elements coordinate together how they work together it's very hard to be confident about your design because you don't know how it's
13:13
Speaker A
going to turn out I know a lot of you guys are most of you guys already do this so it's something that I always recommend you to do it doesn't matter if it's on a computer software or even on a
13:26
Speaker A
hand sketch but always try to visualize your elements within your 3D space for me sticking only to mood boards and material boards and concept ports It's never enough I have to truly see how those elements are going to be
13:43
Speaker A
in every little area of my space guys those were or the elements of design and I just want to say that this elements and even the principles of design these ones are like your toolkit as an interior designer you must always use
14:00
Speaker A
them and Implement them not all of them at once but you should know what they are and you should know how to use them I hope you found this video useful if you did give it a thumbs up subscribe if
14:11

you haven't already and I will see you guys next week bye [Music]
