It is the flagship model out of McLaren Sport series and is designed almost entirely for track. But that is where it all went wrong for this car.

Head on into the tire wall. You know that your light flash. I didn't think I was going to get out of it.

You can see that this car has been [music] absolutely destroyed. The front end is wiped out and there's none of it left. But the damage goes much, much deeper because straight away before we even look, we can tell there's [music]

damage to the carbon fiber monocoque. And with this car being so highly speced, all of these parts are going to be mega expensive. But all of this together leaves us with one big problem.

I don't even think this car's repairable. So, the tub of this McLaren is absolutely ruined. This should never go back on the road, but it is mainly only the front end of the car that's destroyed. And it would be a real shame

They all come with a cage on it. No clutch. This is probably one of the higher spec ones that's been in the UK. It's got 5,000 mi on it or it's probably at 5 and a half thousand

miles on it. Just about. Yeah. [laughter] Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And what happened is off the accelerating out with a double apex.

Basically what happened is the front end started to lose traction, but I corrected it too quickly. I should have let it carry into the skid slightly more head on into the tire wall. Um, and I

was probably doing 40 mph at the time when it hit the impact point and I didn't think I was going to get out of it and I got out of it without a scratch.

Thankfully, John walked away from the crash, but the McLaren wasn't so lucky. So, what have I bought? This is a McLaren 600LT.

So, this is the top of the range of the kind of 570S platform that has been specifically developed for track. Now, interior wise, it has got absolutely everything you could want. We have full Alcantara everywhere, the carbon fiber

center seats, and from factory, it comes [music] fitted with a roll cage and harnesses. So, you know, it's meant for track. Apparently, it's not that good on track though.

Oh, it used to [music] be longer. But actually LT stands for long tail.
Speaker A
It's not an LT at the moment. No. Well, it's a short nose. It's an SN.

SN. Now, this car is a really high spec as well. So, we've got the full exterior carbon package. I think there's [music] three different ones you could spec. So, this would have had a carbon fiber front bumper. It's [music] got carbon fiber

wing mirrors, door inserts here, here, here, here, here, here. It's just [music] absolutely everywhere.

It's in what's the name of the color? Can you remember? Blue. [laughter] But my favorite feature about the 600LT is they move the exhaust from back here to here. And you know what's good about that? It hangs flames up there like that

that you can see out the rear view mirror, which is possibly the coolest thing ever.

And these always get burnt. I was just going to say the scorch marks on the spoiler. There's literally scorch marks.

And I like that. It gives it character. It's like patina. Yes. Means you've been using it. There is one huge problem with this car because the back end actually looks all right. We'll presume for now the engine is okay, but

because this car went so fast into the wall, it does mean that the front end is completely written off. And with that, it has taken out the carbon fiber tub monocoque body. So that means this car is basically shagged all the way to about

here. So essentially, we've got a parts car. Yes, we have. That is definitely not [music] fixable. As much as it'd be nice to be able to just throw a front end on this, I don't think it's going to be

possible because with that like that, the suspension mounting points are ruined. I just don't think that is going to be repairable.

Even if someone could, I wouldn't like that being repaired to be fair. No. It's just not how they're designed.

it, which means I get two keys, a log book, the service history. I managed to get some other bits that you had for the car with it and the car for the grand total of that. So, let me be clear what

I got. This ex-McLaren, two brand new ceramic discs which probably retail at 10 grand and a couple of keys which is worth probably a grand to go and get I think from McLaren the two keys something like that.

Yeah, definitely. And the whole reason behind that is because it didn't go through a salvage auction. We managed to pick it up from Second Gears, which is one of our channel sponsors, but also is a great way of buying a salvaged car because

Yes. Let's um All right. Where is that wiring loom? In the abyss. So, left over from the last McLaren build we did, we bought a whole 650 S loom for like 300 quid. And that could be the key to us actually firing this up

because it'll have all the bits on it that we need. And I'll probably end up doing the same.

give us everything to get that up and running. So we can start to dig through our massive pile of spares left over from the previous build. We've got things like an old steering wheel, some wiring, and some suspension arms. But

the question is, is all of this going to fit on the 600LT? So they're not the same.

Scammed. But there was one part that we couldn't find. the complete wiring loom that we bought for the 650S.

our one has been so bad. And I don't want everyone to have the same idea that all McLarens are rubbish. So I think we are going to try and make a world first a reliable McLaren.

Well, that's some challenge. Yeah, exactly. I don't know if it's going to be possible. I don't know if it's going to be possible with this one with how messed up it is, but I really want to see one that works.

Oh dear. All right. Well, I tell you what we'll do. We'll just take them off but carefully. That just take the whole suspension off.

Yeah, just take it. I mean, if we disconnect the um actual steering joint. Yeah. Steering joint, brake line, top mounts, and just as it's coming off, unthread all the wiring.

Yeah. We just got to be try and preserve these. Yeah. Well, if we get the um engine [music] stand thing here, put it out the way.

Yeah. Put some sponge on it. Now, to make this as easy as possible, we're going to try and take things off in big chunks. And to get this subframe off, we just disconnected the top of the shock absorbers from the body. Remove

the brake lines and any pipe work that's going from the back of the car to the front. And then we can disattach the subframe from the carbon fiber monco.

Must be maxed out now. No, the top on. Well, that they're not attached. Oh, they're not.

I just thought I'd leave it there as it was until you got the weight of it.

It's just when they're made, the structural integrity of the whole tub is as one. If you just repaired that, that would be a weak spot.

mud and it should look like this with a big mil piece in it to bolt all your stuff to. And thankfully, I can buy a new tub for a 600LT with a windscreen. Bear in mind the windscreens are about three

grand on their own for £4,000. So, I'm going to buy this tub, plunk it on that ramp over there, if I can get that out the way. And we're basically going to transfer everything from this one onto that tub, buy the parts to reassemble

the front end, and essentially then because I needed a windscreen anyway, all of this disgusting damage is basically going to cost me £1,000 to fix. It's just a lot of work.

Building a McLaren, not rebuilding because we're starting from scratch, baby going up. Now, you got to think about that. So, if I'm basically paying £1,000 for the tub when you knock off the windscreen, how much did it cost

McLaren to build these tubs in the first place? In short, I think basically no one wants a tub because if you've got a car, then you don't need a tub and the chance of you damaging it and wanting to

do all the work to swap it out is pretty slim. So, they're basically just a big paper weight and that's why you can get them for so cheap. So, if you're looking for a good place to put a sim rig, just

saying. [laughter] Now, the front end is as stripped as we need it to be, but this isn't where most of the work is in this. We need to strip down the entire back end, get the engine out, all sorts of different jobs. So,

we're going to start off with the under trays and then move on to the back bumper.

Right, we want to try and look at the back and how we're going to separate all of this stuff. And there is a few issues. One, this door won't open and we can't get it open. Partially cuz it's on

the ramp and partially cuz there's no [music] power to it and we can't get any power in the car. But the other thing was, what was the other thing? [music] Access to the engine. We want to try and

make that as easy as possible. So, it' be nice to get these quarters off, get the top panel off, [music] um, and many other things. So, we're going to try and figure that out. I personally think it might be a case of

leave this in place. Uh, because we can't get to these bolts and just try and strip the quarter off from here. But then there may also be some bolts here.

Let's just open the can of worms. I like it. I've come to the conclusion that it all needs to come off anyway, so we may as well just take it off.

So, we can get to work removing what's left of the rear bumper and then moved on to taking off the spoiler and the surrounding panel.

There we go. And that gives us access to get the exhaust removed as well.

Uh, I think I'm going to take that heat shield off and then I'll be ready.

the rear quarters, but it just wasn't coming loose. We couldn't quite figure out how it was attached to the car.

[sighs and gasps] What about [music] does that piece uncip from the top? After looking into how these rear quarters go on, we realize that we're stuck. The small rear [music] quarter glass needs to be cut out because the

panel sits underneath that. So, what we're going to do with this rear quarter then, Michael, cuz we're in a bit of a catch 22, aren't we?

Yes. To get that out. To get that out, we need to get the window out. And we can't get the window out cuz we can't get the door open.

I say let's just trim that little bit off there cuz this quarter's finished anyway.

And that Mickey sounds like a brilliant idea. So, he can get to work with an air saw. Just trimming this section of the quarter off, which is where it's fastened behind the window.

[music] But we came to realize that these are bonded on and not going to be easy to get off. [music] We kept trying to see if there's a way we could free them, but we could only get the bottom segment

removed. But now we've got that out the way. I think we've got to move on to a bigger job. One eternity later. That's a boy a Yeah.

Yeah. I've got a feeling this is all going to be bonded in as well.

So, we can't take this quarter off. Two windows [music] out. Yeah. But we don't need to take the quarter off to get the engine out. So, we've got someone coming to take that window out cuz we can actually get that door open

tonight and you may as well take the windscreen out at the same time because it's going to get in our way a little bit. For now, I think we've given ourselves enough access. Let's get this engine out. Can you remember our

And then the power cables, charge coolers have to come out. So, it was airbox, charge cooler, then the cat because it wouldn't all come out in it.

Whilst we were so busy on the back end removing everything we needed to, we had Archie from AGM Windscreen show up who can remove the windscreen and then also the side glass. This is going to give us better access to remove that rear

quarter. Once that was done, I was working at the back, removing the rear suspension. This is going to make getting to the gearbox bolt much easier.

Spin it. Ah, that's better. more right where we're at. We've got all the down pipes off or both the down pipes off. All the water's now disconnected.

Oil's all now disconnected. We've got a fuel line still remaining. Drive shaft to remove and then all the mounts. So, gearbox mount, which is the big one that goes through there. And then the frame that you drop the engine on. Is that

about right, Mickey? Sounds about right to me, mate. Good. There's a couple of little pipes we need to disconnect.

Okay. Okay. Well, I'll work on freeing up these drive shafts while you do that.

Yeah. Yeah. There you go. [music] Right. That's that side back together for now. Drive shaft out the other side.

Then what's left? This little brever pod here, a fuel line. And I think that's about it.

Okay. Bolt this side back up just so it's out the way. And then things are about to happen. Now, we've got more or less all of the accessories disconnected from the engine to the car. Now, we've got the big job of taking out the

massive bolts that hold the subframe on. So, that is a bolt. That is a boat. All thread locked as well.

Yeah. Juicy. Well, we've still got that one up top. I'm hoping it won't do a wheelie now.

[laughter] So next thing we want to look at how we're going to separate this rear frame cuz we want to get this back down to nothing. So this rear quarter needs to come off. We can't do it the same way we

did that side because we weren't bothered about that side. So, we just cut it off where this side we want to keep because it's nice and we can put this on the new tub. So, we've got all the bolts out. As you can see, it is

loose, but this is actually Is it spot welded? Uh, it's kind of an alley spot weld type of thing.

Okay. With glue. Right. So, we got a chisel and drill. Yes. Very carefully. Carefully and neatly.

How are we going to do it? Um, I'm going to drill these out. Okay. And then we're going to get a little panel chisel and we're going to tap the tapy tap slowly slowly catch a monkey.

Um yeah, just two. Something just fell off. There we go. All the rear quarters safely removed. Now we have all the space that we need at the back. So we want to try and pull off as many things

as we can to give us access to the bolts for the rear frame. So brad packs I'm going to take off by removing all the bolts from the body, leaving all the brackets in place. So it all just comes

off as one nice unit. So when we come to fitting up to the new one, we can refit it as one nice unit.

Nice unit. Yeah, you've got it. So we've got bolts here and here and here and here. I really need this extension for this bit. Did I? No, probably overkill.

Do some buggies. That should be it. Somehow your back on the thing ended up back on the found its way home.

Just wants to go home. Yeah, luckily I put the nut on. It's sitting all the way on.

Hold on. Now you have the angle good. Yeah, you were hitting the spot. And maybe there's the one. The question is, can we see the bolts? And we can see two of them straight away. One and two. Somewhere

else there's a big fatty. Like a proper big fatty. With the driver's side now removed, we can do exactly the same thing on the passenger side.

Right. Time to have a tank. Tommy. Exactly. So, we've got two tanks that need to come out. We've got the oil tank and the fuel tank, which will give us access, I think, to everything else to be able to get the frames off. I'm going

to work on the oil tank. Mickey's going to do some of the filly bits on this side. And within literally, I going to say 48 seconds, we're going to have all that out.

That gives us access now to take off the final bolts for the rear frame. Scarily, there is only six bolts that hold essentially everything behind the bulkhead or the firewall, whatever you want to call it, back here. So that the

engine, the wheels, everything, there's six bolts. Slightly concerning, but if it works, it works. So we've got a big fatty down the bottom, which we're going to take out first, and then these two here, which hold the rest of it. So

we'll get the big bottom one out first. Mickey's got his skew wizard. Skiz. Yeah. Let's see how it comes out.

And here are the last two. Let's see if these are a bit easier to crack off.

They're definitely not torqued as much. Let's give it a go. Go with this one first and see how I get on.

Well, it should have been harder. Yeah. Right. We're going to have to put this on a tripod so we can all do this. Yeah, probably.

So, we can get in position. This is a threeman job. It's going to take two of us to lift the frame and one of us to unbolt it. So, we can get to work on doing that. Taking out the first bolts,

followed by the big one underneath. But the frame didn't move. And there's only one reason for that. Basically what it is here, we forgot there's another bolt from the interior possibly. So we now got to somehow empty the whole interior
Speaker A
until we can find that bolt because at the moment we can't really empty the interior because the door doesn't really open and we can't move the seats. So I don't really know what else we're going to do from here. So basically job it.

[laughter] So that presents a problem in itself because the interior we can't really get in it and we can't open the doors. So to get to that bolt, we have to strip the interior and probably have the doors

open. Sounds like a problem. So new plan of action. Get the car off the ramp. Then we can open at least one door. Maybe try and get this door open. And then we can hopefully access that bolt and then

split the frame and the tub on the floor. All right, let's um pipes. It's pretty much just pipes left.

Diping. Yeah, the car needs a dip. Pipes are out the way. So, now we're going to drop the car down onto a little dolly on the front and two jacks on the back. How far off are you, Mickey?

Your jack wants to come over a bit by the looks of it. It does.

Going. Keep going. Hold it there. Well, that's the closest this car, this tub anyway, is going to be to being on the floor ever again. I'm sure a great life.

That went better on easy. I'll do right. Here's our plan of action then. We need to get this door off because that is stopping us from doing loads and loads of things. So, we need to find the best way to do it whilst the window is

still up. We can't get power in the car. We can't do much. So, we need to unbolt the door, unlatch it manually, and then hopefully we can position it, get it off the catch that end, and then bring it

down so we don't damage the window is the idea. out the doors. All right.

Tidy. Well, that's what the inside of a 600LT door looks like. I suppose the first thing is seats out.

That's going to give us a bit more room to There's no room in that interior.

So, the seats are out and now we can start stripping down everything else behind them. So, that's all the carpets, the roll cage, and that's going to show that final bolt.

Do you know if you can have a little peer in there? Thank you. Do you think it's the one underneath or both?

I mean, let's just do both. Let's just undo both. Come on. Come on. Take two. for removing the rear frame.

We put some of the other bolts back in so we can start with the interior ones and then take out the other six which should let it split.

Ready? Hold it there a sec. You lower you lower the front now. You just grab that plastic.

Got it. There we go. Can which way? Both. Oh, [laughter] sweet. That's a strange sensation. [snorts] Yeah, but you've never split in the car in half before.

Yeah. There's the rear frame. And we have left as much stuff on as we can. You can't leave a lot, but every little bit helps.

But now we're separated. So, this bit is now ready to go onto our new tub when that arrives. But we splashed so much water strip on the interior. There is wiring. There is boxes. There is a headliner which is now falling out.

Would you like to get this out? Um, yeah. It was half out from the wind screen.

Yeah. Right. Let's go forwards. The cables there. Uh, yes. There's the camera. Because this car has a cool feature which is like an internal camera for filming your track days which is quite sweet.

We are ticking jobs off here. Over onto the pile. Goodbye headliner. Go again. We're trying to put as much of the like the fixings and stuff back where they came from. So the idea is when we do get

a new tub, we can just transfer everything over and go, "All right, where's the bolt for that?" And we go, "Where's the hole?" And then it's going to go from one hole to another hole and then it's going to

make everything easier. And that is one of the hacks to rebuilding cars is just putting things in places where you'll find them and you know which bolts it uses because if you don't you just end up very confused and bit discombobulated.

Now back to the center console. Back to the center console. So, now we're on to the final few steps to getting this tub completely stripped down. We've got to get out this carbon fiber center console, which definitely wasn't easy.

In fact, nothing about stripping this McLaren down has been easy, but the end result could be so worth it.

Finally. Go on. gears to see center console. That was intense. [music] [snorts] And next we can move on to the dashboard. First step to that is getting the steering wheel removed. Then we've got to roll around underneath and start

to remove all of the bolts. We are going to leave this on the frame and again leave everything attached. So when it comes to putting this in the new tub, [music] it's a much simpler job. But having never removed a dashboard from a

McLaren before made this a lot more complicated. Some of the plugs aren't where you expect them to be and everything's just a little bit different to what we're used to. But eventually it started to come loose and it finally

comes out of the car. I'll walk through. Okay. Come on. What a gent. One dashboard removed.
Speaker A
Oh, that was weighty. Yeah, [laughter] we managed to keep it on the frame and keep most of the goubbins attached. So that'll make it easier to swap over to the other tub.
Speaker A
Another big job ticked off the list. So although this idea might seem wild, we have spent £70,000 essentially on a bunch of parts to try and build up another car. But with this car being so heavily optioned with the triple carbon
Speaker A
pack, the center seats, and loads of other bits, these parts could potentially help us build the best 600LT on the market. It might seem stupid, but I think it could work.

Well, the McLaren is now stripped. This might seem a bit odd to you. This essentially being a parts car, but is a parts car with all of the best bits, meaning we can rebuild now or essentially build from scratch the best

McLaren 600LT possible. This is going to be no easy task. We've got a massive pile of stuff everywhere, and we've still got an entirety of a front end to piece together from secondhand parts probably. But the end result could be
