And the gift that I've decided to make is to solve this problem. If one has a vise, which Yuri does, and if he was to put a piece of steel in it, which he might be inclined to do.

That needed to be 20 mm at finish. Oh, that's 18. Right, cut it off, start again.

And that's where the filing vise comes in. It's a vise in a vise. I've come up with a design that I like.

[music] I'm going to leave that with a little bit more forging to go. Now I'm going to make the bend of this jaw. I want it at about a 45° angle. This might be a good induction forge candidate right at the

The idea is that between here and here, you clamp it in a vise, and then you have these narrow little jaws up at a 45° angle that allow you to get much more clearance on the part that you're filing.

Saying that it wasn't close enough. Ah, sick burn, Jamie. Okay, next heat. We're going to heat it up, then I'm going to start hammering this way so that we can take some of this material and upset it into that

this actually represents the first time that I've climbed rock this entire year. It was a 4:30 a.m.

So, this here is the beginning of this area there. So, you see it still needs a bend, but it also needs this little ledge.

tower. The sun starts beating as we start climbing. And up and up and up I struggle following Maciek. And so there's no time for rest. I left my backpack with my Element at the base of the route. And as I struggled up this

This is so that when it sits in the vise, the vise jaws stop it from falling down on both sides.

bottom of the climb, what do I find? There was my backpack at the bottom of the route, open, and with my Nalgene lid off. Drags of Element all that was left.

Now, the design that I came up with is a hybrid that I created from seeing Mark Asbury's fantastic filing vise video and a video that Black Bear Forge made discussing the Cloverdale Forge laser cut filing vise.

is delicious and clearly Element has just won themselves another customer. Perhaps a customer with dubious ethics, but I'm sure that whoever took my Element that day is now hooked.

And it's a hybrid 'cause it has the forged rear jaw, forged front jaw, but we can have a pivoting moving jaw as well so they can hold different sizes of material.

We've got to go see a butcher first. That is a butcher. I think I did it again. I made it too thin.

One chisel. We all know growing up not to run with scissors, but nobody said anything about not running with red hot chisels.

Far too enthusiastic with the power hammer. I think I'm going to have to cut another bit of material.

negative space left out by the removal of the center piece is going to be the mating component of the other half of the filing vice.

I'm very happy with how that looks. It's been a lot of gentle fiddling, but I think that the uh the cleanliness of that forging is something that I can be rather proud of. Things look quite square.

That is something that makes the little boy in me proud. It's now on to either the moving side or the pivoting jaw. And I'm leaning towards actually doing the pivoting jaw, cuz that's the bit that's quite scary to

Again, part of what excites me about this project is it being a forging project. As best as possible, I'd like to forge all the components cuz that's a fun challenge for me. So, I have to imagine this. Something that's gone into

Almost perfect on that side, but I'm hoping that if I shrink this down that way a little bit, gives us a little bit more material to fill, cleans things up nicely.

I smell something in there. That might have been me. It is looking more and more like the thing, apart from the fact I've lost my jaw.

I've literally completely lost it. What, the plot? Yeah. Oh, here it is. All right, this is the closest we've been to assembly.

[music] Okay, flows quite nicely from this upper portion to this lower parallel portion. Whoop.

would be to use an angle grinder and just follow the little chisel lines that are in there. Zoop zoop, that'd take me 3 seconds. The next simple option would be to do as Mark Asbury did. Again, and all almost credit to him. If you want to

What he did is he put a hacksaw down those to keep it pretty traditional, and then clean up with a file. I've been trying to make this a no filing filing vice. I don't know if using a hacksaw

Now, last month I made a quick dash to the mountains. At 3,838 m above sea level, in the Mont Blanc Massif, is a granite tower with incredible history

But how else am I going to do it? have made it a different way. Why don't you chisel it out before you rolled it?

[music] and reputation. And I've been working so much over the last year that this actually represents the first time that I've climbed rock this entire year.

It was a 4:30 a.m. alarm, a 6:30 lift, and then the race was on across the glacier in the direction of this enormous granite tower.

350 m of hard climbing ahead of us. And the climbers, they converged like cockroaches to the base of this tower.

[screaming] WHY DON'T YOU JUST PUT IT IN THE VISE? WELL, cuz if you hammer on something in a vise, it slips. Oh, would you look at that?

Hmm, that's one of the downsides of a pivoting jaw. See, the benefit and the reason for the pivoting jaw is to be able to accept different stock sizes, but if you're trying to grip nip on something just right here, well,

that's not not quite as good cuz you then have this angle, but then again you'd have an angle if you were on different sizes anyway, so as long as it grips up at or past the pivot, it grips

parallel. Well, that feels quite dignified if I might say so myself. Woah! Scoff at doing chamfers. Now I understand why these things exist.

God After action report time, what are the things that I would like to improve?

Well, given this is all the forging with no filing in the fit-up, of course, my hinge has quite a lot of slop. That's fine. The biggest upset to me is on our rear jaw, I was able to maintain a

little flat spot. So, the first 15 mm here is flat before it starts tapering.

It's a feature I included in the drawing so that as the vise closes on it, it always has something square to grip on.
Speaker A
But, when I had to forge out this leg to increase its length, I lost that little flat spot, which means that as you grip on something, there's a wider angle there in the vise, and so it doesn't quite have as much contact. And if it

wasn't for the fact that this needs to go in a box today, it would be awesome if I had a little spring in there so that it would auto open. As it stands, not the hardest thing in the world to
