How to get a more accurate transcript

Updated 6 October 2026 · 2 min read
In shortAccuracy depends mostly on the recording: the speaker close to the microphone, less background noise and music, and people not talking over each other. Remaining mistakes can be fixed by hand.

How to record better

iPhone and iPad

  1. Put the phone or microphone closer to the speaker, microphone toward the sound.
  2. Remove background music, fans and street noise if you can.
  3. Ask people to speak one at a time and in one language.
  4. Check the result and fix mistakes: ⋯ → Edit transcript.

Android

  1. Put the phone or microphone closer to the speaker, microphone toward the sound.
  2. Remove background music, fans and street noise if you can.
  3. Ask people to speak one at a time and in one language.
  4. Check the result and fix mistakes: ⋯ → Edit transcript.

Web

  1. When recording in the browser, check the Microphone list on the Record screen before Start recording: pick the microphone closest to the speaker. The bubble on the screen grows with the voice; after 30 seconds of silence the screen suggests checking the microphone.
  2. Remove background music, fans and street noise if you can.
  3. Ask people to speak one at a time and in one language.
  4. The web version cannot fix mistakes in the text: correct the lines in the app, and the correction shows on the web too.

Language

The language is detected automatically, so speech in one language is recognized more reliably than mixed speech. See The text came out in the wrong language.

Recording quality in the app

The app has no recording quality setting: the format is fixed. The web version has none either; in the browser you choose only the microphone.

If mistakes remain

Correct the lines by hand: How to fix a mistake in the text. If speakers are mixed up, see Speakers are separated incorrectly.
