Why people look for an Otter.ai alternative

Otter is built around one situation: an English-language video call that its notetaker joins. Outside that situation people hit its limits. Its AI transcription covers six languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese and Chinese. On the free plan a conversation stops at 30 minutes, you can import 3 recorded files in the account’s lifetime, and only the 25 most recent conversations stay visible. And some meetings can’t have a bot in them at all: a client who won’t accept one, a board meeting, an interview at a kitchen table. All figures are from Otter’s pricing page, checked 2026-10-25.

Meetings in the room, with no bot

Otter’s own apps record in person too, so a bot is not the only way to use it. What changes with an alternative is everything around the recording. SozAI never joins a call. You put a phone, iPad or Mac on the table and record, or you upload a file you already have: a voice memo, an interview, a Zoom, Teams or Google Meet recording saved by the platform itself. The transcript comes back with speaker labels and timestamps; you can rename the speakers in the phone app and on the web. Notes, a summary and tasks are made from it in the same place. How to get a recording out of each call platform is on our meeting transcription page; recording in the room is covered on meeting recorder.

The honest limit: SozAI does not capture a live call’s audio on the Mac, and it doesn’t caption a call as it happens. If you need live notes during a call, Otter, Fireflies and Notta’s bots do that and we don’t.

Meetings in other languages

Six languages covers a lot of offices and leaves out many more: Arabic, Russian, Turkish, Polish, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese. SozAI transcribes 99 languages and detects the language by itself. Accuracy differs by language, and we publish it: in our test on 200 read sentences the word error rate was 1.8% in Spanish, 3.6% in English, 5.5% in Russian, 7.6% in Turkish, 19.6% in Arabic and 50% in Kazakh. Those were clean read sentences; a noisy meeting will do worse.

Language detection looks at the recording as a whole, so a meeting that keeps switching between two languages is a hard case for it; try one such recording before relying on it. If bilingual meetings are your daily routine, Notta sells a bilingual transcription add-on built for exactly that.

For teams

Otter Business adds admin features and activity logs at $19.99 per user per month billed yearly. SozAI arranges Team and Education plans by email: write to [email protected] and we invoice the organization. There are no admin roles yet, so each person keeps their own account; see SozAI for teams.

How we compiled this comparison

Every price, limit and language count on this page comes from the vendor's own pricing or feature page, read on 2026-10-25, and each entry links to its source. We did not run the same meeting through all six services, so the page makes no accuracy ranking; the accuracy figures quoted are from SozAI's own published test, which covers SozAI alone. Ratings are left out because we did not verify them. SozAI is our product; where Otter or another tool does something better, the page says so.

Otter.ai alternatives: questions people ask

What is the best free Otter.ai alternative?

It depends on which Otter limit you hit. For many short files, TurboScribe’s free plan allows 3 files a day of up to 30 minutes. For call notes, Fireflies’ free plan has unlimited transcription but 400 minutes of storage per team. SozAI’s 30 free minutes are a one-time trial, useful for testing a language Otter doesn’t cover rather than as a free plan.

Is there an Otter alternative that doesn't join the call with a bot?

Yes. SozAI never joins calls: you record in the room on a phone, iPad or Mac, or upload the recording that Zoom, Teams or Google Meet saved. Notta can record on your device with no bot joining, and Fireflies has a Chrome extension that records without its bot. Otter’s own mobile app also records in person without a bot.

Which Otter alternative works for languages other than English?

Otter’s AI transcription covers six languages. SozAI transcribes 99 with automatic detection and publishes its accuracy per language, from 1.8% word error in Spanish to 50% in Kazakh on read sentences. Happy Scribe lists 150+ languages and dialects, TurboScribe 98+. For meetings held in two languages at once, look at Notta’s bilingual add-on.

Can I move my recordings from Otter to another tool?

Yes. Otter’s free plan exports audio as MP3 and text as TXT; Pro adds PDF, Word and SRT files. To re-transcribe a meeting in a language Otter handles poorly, export the MP3 and upload it to the new tool. SozAI accepts files up to 500 MB. Speaker names you set in Otter don’t carry over, so label them again after transcribing.

Is Otter.ai still worth it in 2026?

Yes, if most of your meetings are English-language video calls and you want notes written while the call runs. Otter joins Zoom, Teams and Meet and shares notes afterwards. It fits less well for meetings in other languages, for long recorded files on the free plan (3 imports per lifetime), or for in-person meetings where you want study or work notes beyond the transcript.

What is the cheapest Otter.ai alternative?

For heavy file use, TurboScribe at $120 a year for unlimited minutes for one person. For occasional use, SozAI Premium from $3.99 a week, or $44.99 a year with up to 700 hours of transcription. Otter Pro itself is $8.33 a month billed yearly. Prices are from each vendor’s site on 2026-10-25.
