Speaker A
In a small town of Nepal, Betravati, on 26th August, the sky was clear.
Speaker A
It was not even a drop of rain and then suddenly a wave of water and sand came.
Speaker A
It was like a tsunami. This scene looked like a scene from a movie but it was not a movie.
Speaker A
It was real life. This wave destroyed everything that was coming in its way for many kilometers.
Speaker A
Thousands of people did not even have time to run and escape because the water was coming from everywhere.
Speaker A
This disaster has caused more than 5000 deaths and is the biggest disaster in Nepal since 2015.
Speaker A
But the question is, when the sky was clear and it was not raining, how did such a big storm come?
Speaker A
At 8.37 am, the world's sensors have an earthquake register near the Nepal-Tibet border. 5.2 magnitude earthquake.
Speaker A
But it wasn't an earthquake. Right now, on a mountain in Tibet, a guide and some other people There were many hikers who were making videos of the mountains.
Speaker A
Then a very loud sound of thunder came. Everyone thought that it was a cloud.
Speaker A
But then the whole valley was rumbled by the sound of a loud crack. This sound was like someone had bombed the mountains.
Speaker A
And this sound came from the 7,245-meter-high mountain of Langtang Lirung in Nepal. At the north face of Langtang Lirung, at a height of about 5000 meters, a part of the mountain and the ice above it had collapsed.
Speaker A
And it was not a small piece, it was a very large part of 1.5 km wide, which came down 1000 meters and collided with the ground so rapidly that a 5.2 magnitude earthquake was registered.
Speaker A
And with this, a big cloud of dust was formed. Think about it. The mountain didn't fall because of earthquake.
Speaker A
Rather, a part of the mountain collided with the earth so fast that it caused an earthquake.
Speaker A
With this, the glacier's ice that had fallen due to friction melted and suddenly turned into water.
Speaker A
And then this whole water and mud went down 7000 feet and was found in Lehinde Kholanadi.
Speaker A
When the water in such a heavy quantity falls into the river, what do you think will happen?
Speaker A
The water level went up so much that it reached the height of 300 feet.
Speaker A
Apart from this, the slope from the mountain to the river was so high that its speed reached 120 miles per hour.
Speaker A
Now this 300 feet high water and marble wall was moving forward so much with the speed of 120 miles per hour that even big stones were flowing with it like a paper.
Speaker A
And its first target was the Rasu-Wagadi border crossing between Nepal and Tibet. This is exactly the place where Lehinde Kholanadi, another river, comes into the Bhotekoshi river.
Speaker A
This was a six-storey building of customs. But water and mud came so forcefully that the entire building was submerged.
Speaker A
Apart from this, there were some immigration buildings and many buses. You can see in the video how all these buses flowed like toys.
Speaker A
People tried to escape and save themselves. But the speed of water was so high that no one got a chance to escape.
Speaker A
Watch this video. Before the flood, this area of the border looked like this. But after the flood, nothing was left here.
Speaker A
No one can say that there will ever be a human civilization living here after seeing these pictures.
Speaker A
Travelers from India to Kailash Mansarovar go on this border crossing. On the day of the disaster, 77 people from the Isha Foundation were also present at the immigration center, which is still unknown.
Speaker A
After Rasu-Wagadi border crossing, this flood enters Nepal and the first victim here was Timoregaon, which was located on the banks of the Bhotekoshi river.
Speaker A
The wave was powerful enough to surge up the mountainside. This wave was about 80 meters high.
Speaker A
80 meters means, that it is about 25-storey building. Imagine, a big wave like a tsunami is coming.
Speaker A
A few minutes later, at around 9.10 am, the scene of destruction reached Siayi Brubesi, where the Bhotekoshi river turns into the Trishuli river.
Speaker A
A friend of Rajan Khatri, a 41 year old police officer, got a call that a flood is approaching.
Speaker A
But he was able to react before the high waves hit the police station. According to Rajan Khatri, it was just water.
Speaker A
There were also big stones, sand and mud. And many tall buildings were also formed in a few seconds.
Speaker A
Rajan also fainted because of this. And when he woke up, only Malba was around him.
Speaker A
And at least 100 houses, schools and other buildings had been flooded. After Siayi Brubesi, the next victim of this flood was Betravati.
Speaker A
Betravati had a clock tower where it was 9.29 pm when this wave came from this town.
Speaker A
And in this very minute, everything was destroyed. This clock is still stuck at 9.29.
Speaker A
Betrawati town was about 100 meters above the river. And here, for centuries, no flood water had reached.
Speaker A
But that day, hundreds of feet high flood destroyed it completely. Betrawati had a market which was always full of people.
Speaker A
But the flood took this entire market with it. Watch this video, how the water started flowing from several high houses in a few seconds.
Speaker A
And where the first house was, at the end of the video, only water was visible.
Speaker A
The journalist of Kathmandu Post, Arjun Paude, who was raised in a village near Betrawati, was kept getting news one by one that morning.
Speaker A
First, the news of the death of his eldest aunt's family came. After that, it was found that the people of another aunt's family were also taken by the river.
Speaker A
His uncle, who had gone to cut grass for the animals that morning, never returned.
Speaker A
And when the water came out, 90% of the houses in Betrawati were flooded. After Betrawati, this flood reached Trishuli Bazar, which is a big urban centre.
Speaker A
The speed of the water here was so high that in a few seconds, it swept a bridge and many houses with it.
Speaker A
And the Trishuli Bazar that used to look like this, later on, it started looking like an apocalyptic film.
Speaker A
There were only a few houses that were safe. In this video, we can see a house that has four floors.
Speaker A
Water and mud are flowing from the other side of the river. And many people are stuck in the balcony of the house.
Speaker A
In just half an hour, water level rose 9 meters above the Trishuli Bazar in the Galchi.
Speaker A
That is, water level of three-storey buildings in just half an hour. Many houses have been flooded in this water.
Speaker A
This flood that started from that glacier caused destruction down to 170 kilometers. And at some places, a mud line was found 650 feet above.
Speaker A
The flood reached this height, 650 feet. Whoever came in its way, the house, shop, bridges, the flood took them all with it.
Speaker A
Many such videos have come up, whose location is difficult to verify. But they show a terrible picture of the destruction in Nepal.
Speaker A
The entire village has been destroyed and the house has been buried in mud to many places.
Speaker A
In one video, a mother is seen running with her two children. Only a few seconds difference.
Speaker A
As soon as it came up a little, the flood came at exactly the same place.
Speaker A
In a few seconds, due to the fast running, these children and their mother were saved.
Speaker A
On the other hand, in another video, many people are climbing the mountain, but the flood is also rising from below.
Speaker A
According to official figures, in this disaster, 1,287 people have been confirmed to be dead.
Speaker A
But this number can be many times more because more than 5000 people are missing. Out of the missing people, 178 Indians are also included. And on the route of the Kailash Yatra alone, 133 Indians have been missing. Apart from t
Speaker A
Since 27th August, in Uttar Pradesh, on the Gandak river, 10 dead bodies have been found in 2 days.
Speaker A
China has stopped the entry of independent journalists in Tibet and the videos of the flood which were shared on social media, are being deleted. Only approved videos are being shared by the government in which not only the disaster but the rescue operation is being shown.
Speaker A
China has confirmed only 5 deaths so far and 558 people have been missing. And every statement says that the disaster started from Nepal.
Speaker A
This disaster has also caused a lot of financial loss to Nepal. Nepal was making its hydropower projects the center of its economic future.
Speaker A
One month ago, India was agreed to sell 10,000 MW of electricity in 10 years.
Speaker A
But the flood destroyed 14 hydroelectric projects. This totaled 431 MW of electricity. That means in just a few hours, the country's 12% power production capacity was destroyed.
Speaker A
Watch this video, in just a few seconds, the flood destroys a hydropower project and the workers working on its side run to save their lives.
Speaker A
The flood has changed the landscape so much that even power companies don't know where their own powerhouses are.
Speaker A
There are 934 people missing from these projects, many of whom are stuck in tunnels filled with mud.
Speaker A
The soldiers of the Nepalese army are rescuing these workers in mud, walking on the knees.
Speaker A
In the same tunnel, 63 Indians were rescued. But the biggest question now arises, is this just a It was a natural disaster in which a glacier broke and the flood caused destruction.
Speaker A
It looks like this from the top but when you go into a little detail, you find out that nothing was natural in this disaster.
Speaker A
A glacier of the mountain broke down because the snow was melting due to global warming.
Speaker A
And for the last few years, this rate is increasing. The rate of glaciers melting.
Speaker A
Hindu Kush Himalaya, which is the name of all the mountains of the Himalaya, in this entire area, after North Pole and South Pole, the most snow is present on the earth.
Speaker A
And this region water 10 big Asian rivers. This region has lost its 12% glacier area and 9% ice volume between 1990 and 2020.
Speaker A
And as the ice melts, such ice-cold lakes and hanging ice blocks form at the height that can break anytime.
Speaker A
This entire area is warming up twice as fast as the rest of the world.
Speaker A
And more than 200 glacier lakes in the entire Himalaya are considered very high risk.
Speaker A
Exactly 14 months ago, on 8th July, 2025, another flood came into this Bhotekoshi river, which had swept the Nepal-China Friendship Bridge.
Speaker A
And at least 9 people were killed. And even further back in 2015, a large earthquake, which fell 7 feet thick from this long mountain, buried a whole village and killed more than 300 people.
Speaker A
Still, there is a warning of another lake being formed on the border between Nepal and Tibet from Malwa.
Speaker A
which can break and bring another destruction. Apart from this, there is more destruction in any such flood situation because the roads of small and big hydro power projects have been closed and the biggest thing is that human settlements are being built on the banks of the rivers.
Speaker A
Previously, villages were built on high ridge lines far from the river at these places in Nepal.
Speaker A
In 50 years old aerial photos, the villages here look like they are in highlands.
Speaker A
And the flood plains of the river were only for farming. The bridges and pools that were built here were intentionally made temporary so that they could be rebuilt when floods hit.
Speaker A
That means floods didn't enter people's homes. Homes and markets entered the areas around the river.
Speaker A
The truth is that if the leaders of the world had not ignored climate change as a problem for the future, the human toll of this disaster could have been reduced.
Speaker A
This disaster is a glimpse of the great crisis that is raging on the entire Himalayan region and that will not stop at the borders of any country.
Speaker A
The question is whether this disaster will bring any real change or will it become another forgotten name in the long list of the disasters of the Himalayas?
Speaker A
This list includes 2021 Chamoli, 2023 Sikkim Glacial Lake outburst flood, and 2025 Uttarakhand Dharali flash floods.
Speaker A
Because of this climate change, today we are seeing another terrible event which has never been seen in human history before.
Speaker A
which scientists are calling Godzilla event. A thing due to which heat wave records are breaking everywhere from America to Europe.
Speaker A
In France, it is 44 degrees, in Italy, it is 46 degrees Celsius. We are getting to see the temperature up to this level.
Speaker A
What is this event? I have talked about it in detail in this video. You can click here and watch.
Speaker A
