You are going to need a really good bread to go with all of the soups and stews that you love to make during the cold weather. I've got just the perfect thing. We're going to make a cheddar-based skillet bread. It is quick.
Speaker A
It is delicious. Jump on in and make it with me. Hi, I'm Mary Katherine, and welcome to my table.
Speaker A
I'm so glad that you're here. This is one of those really quick breads that takes very little effort, but is so delicious. Everybody may think that you spent a long time on it. Let me show you the ingredients that we're going to use.
Speaker A
We're going to start off by using some Bisquick. Then we're going to take one egg and we're going to beat it into one cup of milk. We'll have just a touch of sugar to help bring all the flavors
Speaker A
together in this and to balance out the savoriness that we're going to get from 1 and 1/2 cups of freshly shredded cheddar cheese.
Speaker A
We're also going to melt one tablespoon of butter in our iron skillet before we put the bread in.
Speaker A
And then we'll melt some more butter. And we're going to add some garlic powder, some parsley flakes, and some onion powder, and make a delicious herb butter to brush over the top of that bread.
Speaker A
I've got my oven preheating to 400°, and it's almost that hot now. So, at this point, I'm going to take my iron skillet. This is a 10-inch iron skillet, and it has 1 tbsp of butter. And we're going to let that butter melt and our
Speaker A
skillet get hot. So, first thing that we're going to put in our bowl is our Bisquick. We're going to use 1 and 3/4 cups of Bisquick. Today, okay, that's about 1 and 3/4 cups. Now, I'm going to go ahead and sprinkle this
Speaker A
sugar in. This is just 2 to 3 teaspoons of sugar. Just enough to help bring out flavor in the dish. Not enough to make sweetness in it. And then I'm going to take my fork and I'm just going to kind of mix that
Speaker A
sugar in before we put anything else in the bowl. All right, that's pretty good. And now I'm also going to take my cheese and add it in. We want to use 1 and 1/2 cups in the bread itself. I have just a little bit
Speaker A
more in this because I'm going to reserve that to sprinkle on top at the end. So, I'm not going to put quite all this in, but you want one and 1/2 cups in your bread.
Speaker A
All right, I'm going to save that much out. And then I'm just going to kind of mix the cheese into our Bisquick mixture as well.
Speaker A
I have one cup of milk and I'm going to add one egg to that.
Speaker A
And I'm going to beat it up into the milk. I want it to be mixed well. And it also starts to create a little bit of bubbles and airiness into the mixture.
Speaker A
It's going to help our bread be a little bit lighter. So, you just want to mix it like this for maybe 35 to 40 seconds.
Speaker A
And you can see those bubbles on top. So that's great. Now we're going to add our milk and egg mixture to our dry ingredients.
Speaker A
And I'm just going to lightly use our spatula and mix it just until it's combined.
Speaker A
We don't want to overmix it. This is kind of like a biscuit where it can get tough if you overmix it, and we do not want that.
Speaker A
So, this is coming together nicely and we're really just going to turn it maybe 12 to 15 times with our spatula and everything should be well combined.
Speaker A
All right, that looks good. I'm going to leave it there. All right, it's time to get our iron skillet out.
Speaker A
So, our butter has melted and our skillet's getting hot. It was in there maybe five minutes. And so, now we're going to pour our mixture into our iron skillet. That butter that we melted is just going to create a nice
Speaker A
little crust on the bottom and make it quite delicious. Now I'm going to take that cheese that I reserved and we're just going to lightly sprinkle the top.
Speaker A
Now it's ready to go into the oven. We're going to bake it at 400° for about 25 minutes.
Speaker A
While this is in the oven, go ahead and hit that subscribe button so you'll get notifications when we come out with new videos. That way, you won't get burned.
Speaker A
That looks delicious. Now, I baked this for exactly 17 minutes. Your oven may be a little bit different. Mine cooks pretty quickly and I did not want it to get too brown on the top. You may need 20 to 25 minutes,
Speaker A
but just be sure to check it early. You don't want it to get too brown on top.
Speaker A
All right. Now, I've got my butter melted. This was about four tablespoons of butter. And we're going to add our seasonings.
Speaker A
I'm going to do about a half a teaspoon of some onion powder. I'm going to do about a teaspoon of parsley.
Speaker A
And then we're going to do about a teaspoon of our garlic powder. And now I'm just going to stir this up real quick.
Speaker A
And now we're going to pour this over our bread. And then just use our brush if we need to.
Speaker A
Just brush it all over the top. Now, let's slice into it and give it a taste.
Speaker A
Hot and steamy. Good and cheesy. Garlicky. Looks delicious. All right, let's give it a taste.
Speaker A
Just look at that bite. Can you see the steam coming off that? And the crustiness. See, you got that little bit of crust on the bottom because we put just that touch of butter down there.
Speaker A
And yet the inside is so soft and it's so full of flavor with the garlic and the cheese and the parsley. M. It's really delicious. You know, this is just a great alternative when you want to make those garlic cheese biscuits, but
Speaker A
you don't want to have to take the time to dip each biscuit out. You can just put it all in your skillet like this and then just slice it up and serve it alongside your soup or your supper. It
Speaker A
is delicious. Everybody will be happy. Trust me. Well, thank you so much for joining me today at Mary Katherine's Table. I always love it when you come and enjoy these recipes with us here in the kitchen. And remember to go out
Speaker A
today, find somebody who needs a little bit of kindness and give them some of yours. And if you are looking for a really great soup recipe to serve this alongside, check out this ham and potato chowder.
Speaker A
It is so delicious and this would be perfect with.
