Let's go live to Liam Tapper in Sydney. Liam, what does this mean for the way we shop at Bunnings?

Speaker C
Yeah, morning, guys. Well, it means that Bunnings is now able to put in place again this facial recognition technology that they first used back in 2018.

But of course, it hasn't been used at Bunnings since 2021 when it was found to have breached the privacy of its customers.

However, recently, Bunnings was once again given the green light to use this technology on customers when they enter a number of their stores.

Now, Bunnings assure us that it's all to do with trying to catch out repeat offenders.

And we spoke to a number of workers here in one of the Bunnings in Sydney and they they think it's a good thing.
00:00
Speaker C
They think it's good for their safety and also good to work with the New South Wales police here in Sydney to catch these offenders who are really causing havoc for these store workers and these stores across the city.

But critics say that it it does breach privacy and it does make sure mean that when you go into a Bunnings, you're having data taken from you that not necessarily that you want to have given over to a big corporation.

Speaker C
So Bunnings, they're yet to put this back into place, but certainly does open the door for them and a number of other retailers to bring in this type of technology.

Speaker C
Which again, they assure is all to do with both workers and customer safety, guys.
00:00
Speaker B
Yes, and also theft. Thank you so much, Liam.
