Speaker A
Hello again, this is Preheat, welcome back to another World of Warcraft video. Today we're going to be talking about Frost Mage in Midnight.
00:08
Speaker A
So Frost is always a spec, it's always really nice at the start of the expansion, especially because it's very good at leveling, it's usually the spec that new mages are most familiar with, and it has been redesigned in Midnight.
00:20
Speaker A
There's a lot that's changed, we're going to cover all of that, but I want to just kind of give you a disclaimer right at the start here.
00:25
Speaker A
So the version of Frost that we're going to be teaching is going to be, uh, you know, it's going to perform the best and it's also going to be the easiest to understand.
00:30
Speaker A
The reason why I'm telling you this is because there's like a lot of variations, a lot of different ways that you might see Frost, uh, talked about online in terms of the opener and how you should play it.
00:38
Speaker A
Um, but just to kind of illustrate like how much it doesn't matter, uh, this is a sim with all sorts of different variations on the opener, the one we're going to be doing is the no flurry here at the top, uh, but any of these, they're within 57 DPS are basically equivalent, so yeah, um, not a whole lot of damage to be shifted around by doing different openers, but the one we're going to talk about is going to feel the most intuitive and the best.
00:58
Speaker A
I usually like to start these videos off with the opener to the rotation because I feel like it gives you a pretty good sense for how the rotation plays, a lot of people watch these videos just to kind of get a feel for if they even want to look into the spec, uh, so let's just start with a very simplified version of the opener.
01:53
Speaker A
So with Midnight, Frost has been redesigned so that you no longer have the shatter combos with like Winter's Chill, um, a lot of the buffs and spells are going to be the same name, but they kind of work differently, so the main thing that's different is now instead of shattering the mob with Winter's Chill and Fingers of Frost, you just have a debuff that you're actually applying with your Frostbolt, your Flurry, uh, your Ray of Frost, Frozen Orb, etc.
02:24
Speaker A
You're going to be applying this debuff called Freeze, and then you can consume that Freeze debuff with your Ice Lance, and that's going to cause it to shatter, and that shatter is an AoE explosion.
02:36
Speaker A
Enemies that die also shatter, so if you are, you know, applying a bunch of Freeze to a mob and then it just falls over, it's going to pop and do AoE around that target, but this is really great for like, uh, Mythic Plus especially because it means that you can just prioritize damage on, uh, one specific target.
03:10
Speaker A
There are also going to be talents that allow you to consume Freeze on enemies that aren't your main target, uh, so stuff like making your Ice Lance cleave additional enemies, just kind of cold seeking at whatever target has the highest shatter value, also there's stuff like Comet Storm, which we won't really be playing as Spell Slinger, um, but just know that there's like other ways, I'm kind of over simplifying here to explain the rotation, but, uh, essentially, yeah, you're just applying Freeze to the target and then you're shattering it with Ice Lance, and then besides that, you're just kind of going through your various cooldowns and procs, and that's pretty much Frost in a nutshell.
03:47
Speaker A
All right, so before the pull, you're going to put up your barrier and you can get your mirror images out if you need to, this is really just for threat, you don't actually have to do mirror images anymore, it doesn't give you any sort of damage mitigation, um, they're just purely for threat these days.
04:00
Speaker A
Uh, but on the target dummy, you want to start a glacial spike so they basically is in the air as the boss is pulled, so glacial spike's kind of weird, whenever you enter raid combat, it's going to take it away from you, so, uh, you got to make sure you cast that beforehand.
04:20
Speaker A
If you only cast a frostbolt because of this, it's not a big deal though.
04:26
Speaker A
Um, so anyways, Glacial Spike is going to go off right before the timer ends, you can see it's completing here as the timer is completing, and then the Glacial Spike is in the air, the boss is being pulled.
05:00
Speaker A
We're going to go ahead and start with just a frozen orb straight from that Glacial Spike queued from it, yes, and also we can have Bloodlust and potions and all that good stuff.
05:30
Speaker A
And as soon as the orb leaves our hands, we're going to use Ray of Frost, now this is going to be a bit wasteful when it comes to our resources, but that's okay, again, I've showed, uh, the sim, right, it doesn't really matter which variation you do.
05:46
Speaker A
In fact, using both fingers of frost before you move on, um, is a damage loss.
05:50
Speaker A
So it's really just about getting everything on cooldown.
05:54
Speaker A
So you're going to full channel this Ray of Frost, and then after this, this is when we move on to the rest of the rotation, but from this point on, it's always going to be these next three steps.
06:10
Speaker A
You're going to use Flurry, and then you're going to use two Ice Lances.
06:17
Speaker A
Now after that, that's when you move on to the rest of the rotation.
06:24
Speaker A
Uh, it's going to be kind of like about what sort of procs you have, how many freezing stacks you have, um, but if you're wondering what this UI is, you can kind of see it, I just want to point it out here.
06:40
Speaker A
Um, see this bar at the bottom, this is my freezing bar, I'm going to have a link to the UI, uh, at the bottom of this video, but I find that something like this is very, very useful, you can track it with an icon and a number, I have this just showing, you know, as a redundancy there.
06:54
Speaker A
Uh, but having this a bar is really, really nice because you can have it with conditional formatting, and you can have it change colors whenever you reach certain thresholds.
07:02
Speaker A
Um, so yeah, uh, just to cover it again, just real quick, Glacial Spike into Orb, and then you're going to use your Ray of Frost, and then it's going to be Flurry, Ice Lance, Ice Lance.
07:10
Speaker A
Uh, and from here we're going to move on to the main rotation, but first, let's talk about the talents and gearing and then we'll get back into the rotation with a little bit more of a deep dive.
07:18
Speaker A
All right, so this is my character currently, and, uh, you know, the raid hasn't opened yet, so you'll notice that my item level's a little bit low, I don't have the tier bonus, and I haven't had a perfect choice of stats.
07:30
Speaker A
But the best stat for you as a Frost Mage is actually kind of like a mixture between critical strike, mastery, and haste.
07:40
Speaker A
Versatility is a stat that you will probably end up having just because it's hard to avoid, uh, but we're trying to kind of just like focus on the critical strike, mastery, and haste more so than anything else.
07:50
Speaker A
Um, and it is actually kind of important that we have our critical strike be our highest stat.
08:00
Speaker A
We're going to be using a potion called Potion of the Reckless, and that's going to amplify our biggest stat, and we want it to hit critical strike.
08:20
Speaker A
So it's okay if your crit isn't the highest, you can always use, you know, consumables like, for instance, I have this flask on that's giving me extra crit, and that way I'm forcing crit to hit that threshold.
08:30
Speaker A
Also, whenever it comes to trinkets, because our best in slot trinket does kind of change things.
08:40
Speaker A
Um, this trinket right here, Velgor's Final Stare, this is one of our best in slot trinkets.
08:50
Speaker A
This is going to give you a ton of mastery, you got to be really careful whenever you're using your potion that you use it before this trinket.
09:00
Speaker A
Because if you don't, uh, then you're going to hit mastery as your highest stat because it's just infusing you with like a thousand.
09:10
Speaker A
So just make sure that you in your macro use potion and then this trinket and then you can go ahead and use your Ray of Frost, and that way you get the best stats.
09:20
Speaker A
Uh, the other good trinket you're looking for, it's probably going to get nerfed, it already got nerfed once, but it's still too good, it is the Gaze of the Allseer.
09:30
Speaker A
So be on the lookout for these two, if you're looking for other trinket recommendations, Dorvan's Wowhead guide, which will be linked in the description, will have the most up-to-date on those trinkets.
09:40
Speaker A
Moving on from there, we have the talents, so for Spell Slinger, it's going to be kind of like the same setup for everything.
09:50
Speaker A
The version of Frost that I'm teaching today is actually going to be a Blizzardless Frost.
10:00
Speaker A
So this is the single target setup, uh, we have Piercing Cold here and we also have Rime Caster here.
10:10
Speaker A
I don't like to really manage the pet, but you can also have the water elemental if you want.
10:20
Speaker A
Um, but the main change that you're going to make whenever it comes to cleave is you're going to remove Rime Caster, put it into Splintering Ice.
10:30
Speaker A
You're going to remove Piercing Cold and put it into Fractured Frost, and then this Ray of Frost talent can go over here to Splintering Ray, and that's going to give you cleave on your Ray of Frost.
10:40
Speaker A
And this is basically what I'm going to be playing Mythic Plus as, uh, obviously I'll be picking up some different utility over on the class side of things.
10:50
Speaker A
Um, but I am not recommending Freezing Rain, you can take Freezing Rain and it is like 2% better at like, you know, above like eight targets or something like that.
11:00
Speaker A
Um, but you're only really going to be casting Blizzard whenever it's instant cast, and in my opinion, Blizzard's kind of a scam spell.
11:10
Speaker A
Uh, with the new design of Frost, you just have a lot more, uh, priority damage if you just skip on Blizzard entirely.
11:20
Speaker A
You can pick up Frozen Touch instead, and it just ends up working better, so yeah, this is the Blizzardless version of Frost.
11:30
Speaker A
Um, this is going to be your AoE setup again, and for single target, just swap those two and then add in the Frigid Focus.
11:40
Speaker A
All right, so just to show it again, the opener, you're Glacial Spiking into Orb, and then you're using your potion, trinket, and then using Ray of Frost.
11:50
Speaker A
And then after that Ray of Frost finishes, then we move on to Flurry, Ice Lance, Ice Lance, and then the rest of the rotation.
12:00
Speaker A
All right, so what's actually happening here, it's a little overwhelming, there's a lot of stuff like flying out of my character, so let's explain like what some of this stuff is.
12:10
Speaker A
So these big guys, these are your Apex talent, they're Hand of Frost, don't really worry too much about them, they just kind of do damage and apply freezing.
12:20
Speaker A
Um, we also have the icicles, which are going to be like a five stack above our head, that's going to be for Glacial Spike, it's just kind of a timer that's counting down, so don't worry about those too much.
12:30
Speaker A
And then we have these tiny ones, these are our splinters, this is our spell slinger, uh, hero talent.
12:40
Speaker A
So the splinters I mentioned, they come from basically all of your damaging spells, so like Frostbolt, Flurry, you get them from Frozen Orb, you get them from Ray of Frost.
12:50
Speaker A
You also get them from various procs, and there's two main things they do except for just dealing damage.
13:00
Speaker A
Um, so they're going to give you cooldown reduction on your Frozen Orb, and then also, we have a chance for splinters to apply a stack of freezing.
13:10
Speaker A
So that's going to be giving us a lot of extra damage there.
13:20
Speaker A
And then also just kind of a side note, whenever we consume freezing with shatter, we're also getting cooldown reduction on Ray.
13:30
Speaker A
So that is why Frozen Orb and Ray of Frost are going to have a shorter cooldown than the tooltip mentions.
13:40
Speaker A
So now that we've established that a lot of these effects aren't really worth tracking, let's talk about what's actually worth paying attention to.
13:50
Speaker A
So, uh, procs, number one, you have your spell opacity alerts, this is a setting that you can go ahead and change in your, uh, wow options.
14:00
Speaker A
But, um, Brain Freeze is going to be this guy up here, okay, so Brain Freeze says whenever we do Frostbolt, we have a chance to proc this.
14:10
Speaker A
We're also going to get it guaranteed from with our Frozen Orb because of our talents, but essentially the idea is whenever you get this proc where you get the free Flurry and it shows up up here.
14:20
Speaker A
This leads to our most important buff to pay attention to, which is Thermal Void, okay.
14:30
Speaker A
Thermal Void, the icon, it looks like this right here, whenever you use Flurry after you have Brain Freeze, you're going to get this buff.
14:40
Speaker A
And it's going to make your next shatter consume twice as much as it normally would, very cool.
14:50
Speaker A
Uh, shatter normally consumes six stacks of Freeze, okay, and you can hold 20, so with that, it's going to do 12.
15:00
Speaker A
Fingers of Frost is the other important proc, that's this guy on the side and this one over here, you can hold two of them.
15:10
Speaker A
Sometimes the UI bugs by the way, and you'll see that you have two and then it goes to zero, just know that everyone has that issue.
15:20
Speaker A
Um, but anyways, so Fingers of Frost, it's going to make it so that your next Ice Lance is going to, uh, act as if it consumed the maximum amount of freezing.
15:30
Speaker A
But it's not actually going to consume anything, this is actually really great because if we combine these two, right, like if I have a Thermal Void proc, which means I'm going to be using up 12 freezing in theory.
15:40
Speaker A
And then I have Fingers of Frost and I do an Ice Lance, that means I just got 12 damage worth of freezing out of my Ice Lance without actually consuming 12 freezing.
15:50
Speaker A
And, uh, the best part is the target doesn't actually have to have freezing on it at all, like, uh, for instance, if a totem spawned and you just use your Frozen Orb.
16:00
Speaker A
And now you use your Flurry with Brain Freeze and now you're going for a Fingers of Frost Ice Lance, you're going to get the damage as if you built up freezing on that target ahead of time.
16:10
Speaker A
And it's going to do that big pop and remember, uh, shatter is also AoE.
16:20
Speaker A
Um, so yeah, the basics of the rotation, you're having Freeze on the target and you're consuming it with shatter, that's giving you damage.
16:30
Speaker A
And these procs are basically either making it so that you consume more of them, or making it so that you don't have to consume any and you get the full value of it.
16:40
Speaker A
Right, or enabling Brain Freeze, enabling the use of Flurry, and then giving you Thermal Void, that's how you get Thermal Void from this.
16:50
Speaker A
Um, and again, this UI is going to be available, uh, you can just check the description, but this bar right here on my UI shows how many freezing stacks my target currently has.
17:00
Speaker A
Uh, which is useful for tracking if it's worth it to Ice Lance or not.
17:10
Speaker A
So getting back into this, right, we just got done doing our two Ice Lances.
17:20
Speaker A
And now basically the name of the game is we want to spin up our freezing so that we can use our second Ray of Frost.
17:30
Speaker A
So we're just going to keep Ice Lancing until we have less than six freezing.
17:40
Speaker A
So right here I have seven, you can see a bunch of these splinters are going to fly out, so this might actually go up as I'm doing this Ice Lance.
17:50
Speaker A
But our goal is to get this below six and then immediately hit that second Ray.
18:00
Speaker A
Now just a minor note here, if you see that you have a bunch of splinters and Hand of Frost like in the air, this isn't something you necessarily have to do.
18:10
Speaker A
It is something that I do though, I'm actually just going to throw in like one extra Flurry just to try and be a little bit less wasteful because I don't have to worry about my Ray of Frost like sitting on cooldown.
18:20
Speaker A
It has charges, right, so as long as I use this before the second charge goes out or before my potion runs out, I'm good.
18:30
Speaker A
Um, so yeah, I go for that Flurry and then I consume the Freeze that came from it and then I go into the Ray.
18:40
Speaker A
And this Ray is always going to give you two Fingers of Frost, it's also going to give you a ton of Freeze stacks.
18:50
Speaker A
Um, so yeah, basically you want to empty the bag before you use Ray of Frost, assuming that Ray of Frost isn't fully capped out like on the pull, right, with two charges.
19:00
Speaker A
Whenever you have Fingers of Frost, you're going to want to use Ice Lance, right, so we just kind of want to consume those right away.
19:10
Speaker A
Um, and you can use both of them so that you don't have any worry about over capping.
19:20
Speaker A
Remember, you get Fingers of Frost sometimes from just like, uh, all sorts of different procs, right, so just like know that if you're sitting cap, that's not good.
19:30
Speaker A
Uh, it's just good to use Fingers of Frost right away, also Glacial Spike, Frozen Orb, Ray of Frost, these are all giving you Fingers of Frost.
19:40
Speaker A
So you can see here, I Glacial Spike as the next priority, that's actually higher than consuming your Freeze stacks without Fingers of Frost, right.
19:50
Speaker A
So as soon as I get done spending my Fingers of Frost, Glacial Spike's back, I'm going to Glacial Spike.
20:00
Speaker A
Um, yeah, you're going to over cap freezing sometimes as a spec, and that is okay.
20:10
Speaker A
There are basically three different things that are worth over capping freezing for.
20:20
Speaker A
That's going to be your Frozen Orb, that's going to be your, uh, Glacial Spike.
20:30
Speaker A
And that's going to be stuff like applying your Thermal Void by using the Brain Freeze Flurry.
20:40
Speaker A
You over cap there, it's okay, because in the long run, you're getting more out of it.
20:50
Speaker A
Anyways, Glacial Spike, so there's a fun quirk about this spell, I just kind of want to mention this.
21:00
Speaker A
If you're spell queuing, which you should be like always trying to cast the next action as you're casting, right.
21:10
Speaker A
Um, it's actually normal that you're going to Ice Lance here if you spell queue the Ice Lance before you get the Fingers of Frost proc.
21:20
Speaker A
Because there's like a slight delay on it giving it to you, so for instance, if I was in this scenario and I had zero freezing on the target, this would actually be bad because the Ice Lance wouldn't have Fingers of Frost.
21:30
Speaker A
So it's just like a minor thing, just be aware that, you know, you can see the Ice Lance there, it did consume some freezing.
21:40
Speaker A
That is because, uh, yeah, the Fingers of Frost like hadn't applied yet.
21:50
Speaker A
Um, but yeah, whenever Frozen Orb comes off cooldown, you're just going to go ahead and use it.
22:00
Speaker A
You can see the CDR just kind of like getting ripped away from it, that's from all the splinters.
22:10
Speaker A
Uh, and then just use the orb right away, ideally you've already consumed your Brain Freeze whenever this happens, right.
22:20
Speaker A
Because consuming Brain Freeze with Flurry, if you don't currently have Thermal Void, is like the highest of the high priorities.
22:30
Speaker A
You don't want to waste that, okay, number one, do not waste Thermal Void.
22:40
Speaker A
Do not waste Brain Freeze, convert the Brain Freeze into Thermal Void and then use the Thermal Void with your Ice Lance.
22:50
Speaker A
Um, so I do that before the orb if I have it, right, but, um, as soon as orb comes up, I just want to use it right away.
23:00
Speaker A
So here the orb comes out and the orb is always going to give me a Brain Freeze and it's always going to give me a Fingers of Frost.
23:10
Speaker A
Which means you have kind of like a combo with orb, unless you already have like Thermal Void already in your hand, right.
23:20
Speaker A
You're going to orb out and then you're going to Flurry, and then that gives you Thermal Void and then you're going to Ice Lance.
23:30
Speaker A
And you may even get more than one Ice Lance with Fingers of Frost, but just try to push down your freezing.
23:40
Speaker A
And this is actually the first time aside from whenever I was trying to push my freezing down for the, the second Ray of Frost.
23:50
Speaker A
This is the first time where I'm actually like out of stuff to do, we're now kind of like in the filler portion of the rotation.
24:00
Speaker A
So this is actually where you want to use Flurry, okay, so at the very top of the list, again, it's Thermal Void.
24:10
Speaker A
You want to make sure that you're getting Thermal Void by consuming Brain Freeze, uh, very top of the ticket.
24:20
Speaker A
And then you've got stuff like your, uh, your Frozen Orb, right, uh, getting those Frozen Orbs out.
24:30
Speaker A
And then using your Fingers of Frost, using your Glacial Spike, and then you have, uh, consuming freezing down to six.
24:40
Speaker A
And then after you're done with the freezing, once the freezing is out, the next thing you're going to do is just use any Flurries that you currently have.
24:50
Speaker A
And then you're at the bottom of the barrel and you're just Frostbolting.
25:00
Speaker A
So here I Flurry and I don't have anything else and now I'm just going to Frostbolt, but if I go above six Freeze, I'm going to Ice Lance.
25:10
Speaker A
I got the Fingers of Frost there last second, so it didn't spend any and now I can do a second one right here.
25:20
Speaker A
I already queued the, the Frostbolt, that's okay, don't interrupt your casts, right, just make sure you get it out.
25:30
Speaker A
And then here you can see I have like basically no freezing, but I do have a, uh, Brain Freeze proc here.
25:40
Speaker A
So I want to get Thermal Void, so I'm going to go ahead and queue that from the Frostbolt.
25:50
Speaker A
And I'm not going to use it right away, I'm going to wait and then as I'm Glacial Spiking, I do end up getting 10 Freeze here.
26:00
Speaker A
So I can actually queue the Ice Lance from this even though it's not going to consume the Fingers of Frost like I said.
26:10
Speaker A
Um, you'll see it go away, see that, it, it took it away before I consumed the Fingers of Frost.
26:20
Speaker A
Um, and now we have a perfect combo, right, we have the Brain Freeze and Fingers of Frost.
26:30
Speaker A
You love to see this, anytime you see this, it's just Flurry into Ice Lance.
26:40
Speaker A
Flurry into Ice Lance, doesn't matter what the Freeze is, boom, you get a massive pop, that was non-crit 44K.
26:50
Speaker A
That's pretty much all there is to this rotation.
27:00
Speaker A
Um, you, again, you're not razor focused on wasting the least amount of Freeze stacks.
27:10
Speaker A
Wasting procs is generally more important, keeping abilities on cooldown is generally more important.
27:20
Speaker A
Um, you are managing your freezing kind of like in between those dry periods.
27:30
Speaker A
And your Ray and your Orb come up constantly and you're just kind of like trying to beat down your Freeze stacks in between.
27:40
Speaker A
Always try to empty the bag though before you go into a Ray, right, so like try to get below six.
27:50
Speaker A
So anyways, I'm going to Ray here and then Frozen Orb comes up, so I'm just going to go ahead and use one Ice Lance just to clear it out.
28:00
Speaker A
And then Orb here and then now, again, we have Brain Freeze, we have Fingers of Frost, we're going to use Flurry into Ice Lance.
28:10
Speaker A
And since we still have Fingers of Frost, we're going to use another Ice Lance, and we get Fingers of Frost back, so we're going to use another Ice Lance.
28:20
Speaker A
And then now we have freezing, so we're going to use another Ice Lance, and now we have Glacial Spike, so we're going to use that just to get it on cooldown.
28:30
Speaker A
And we're going to Ice Lance from it even though it's not going to consume Fingers of Frost because we're going to queue it, that's okay, because we have enough freezing.
28:40
Speaker A
Boom, and once more, and then Brain Freeze proc again.
28:50
Speaker A
Okay, so if you ever end up in this situation where you just use the, uh, Brain Freeze, make sure, you know, you're doing that, right.
29:00
Speaker A
Even if you don't have the, the freezing for it, just so that you can hold another Brain Freeze.
29:10
Speaker A
Um, you're not going to want to use this Thermal Void right away if you have it.
29:20
Speaker A
You want to go ahead and make sure you have like more freezing first, so I'm actually going to just cast a couple Frostbolts here just to get it higher.
29:30
Speaker A
And then I can Ice Lance, uh, right afterwards and that means that I'm getting the, uh, not necessarily the full value there because it wasn't 12.
29:40
Speaker A
Um, but I'm getting enough value for it for it to be worth it.
29:50
Speaker A
And, yeah, that is the rotation in single target and AoE, you're just going to do this same thing depending on the target count.
30:00
Speaker A
Just make sure that whatever mob that you're hitting is central to the pack.
30:10
Speaker A
And, uh, also if the mob looks like it's going to die somewhat soon, you probably want to swap off to another target.
30:20
Speaker A
And the main reason for that is that the, uh, Ice Lance Fractured Frost talent is going to make it so your Ice Lance is cold seeking.
30:30
Speaker A
It's going to look for the target with the highest stack of Freeze and it's going to consume those.
30:40
Speaker A
You don't want the target to die with a, a bunch of freezing on it if you can help it, right.
30:50
Speaker A
Swap targets earlier, start building freezing on a new mob, and then those Ice Lances are going to still chip away at the other guy.
31:00
Speaker A
And hopefully by the time that mob dies, um, most of its stacks are gone and you've gotten a little extra value there.
31:10
Speaker A
Um, but yeah, that's pretty much Frost in a nutshell.
31:20
Speaker A
Um, just a couple little things when it comes to tech, um, so whenever you're in like a Mythic Plus scenario.
31:30
Speaker A
You can actually start building up freezing on targets like before everyone else is able to really damage because of Mirror Image.
31:40
Speaker A
Whenever you have Mirror Images out, you don't have threat, so you can start just kind of like throwing out the freezing.
31:50
Speaker A
As long as you aren't trolling, then you aren't like slowing mobs that are going to make it so the pull takes longer for it to gather.
32:00
Speaker A
Um, you know, since you're free of threat, you can just pop the Mirror Image, start building up the freezing.
32:10
Speaker A
And then hopefully by the time everything is kind of situated, maybe you tab to a different mob after you do your Frozen Orb and then you Ray that other mob.
32:20
Speaker A
And now you have two mobs with like full freezing and that allows you every Ice Lance you're hitting, boom, boom, boom, you're getting double freezing, right.
32:30
Speaker A
Kind of like bursting wounds where you like build it up ahead of time, same concept applies here.
32:40
Speaker A
It's not like a huge deal for Spell Slinger because you don't have an AoE spender with Comet Storm.
32:50
Speaker A
Um, but this is just like something to be aware of that you can kind of like set your ducks in a row just a little bit earlier than a lot of other people.
33:00
Speaker A
And Mirror Image does allow mages to do this, right, that's the whole idea.
33:10
Speaker A
If you pull threat as a mage after your Mirror Image, you can always Greater Invisibility, not a big deal.
33:20
Speaker A
Um, just be mindful that you might be slowing mobs and if mobs are already slow and they're even slower because you're Frostbolt.
33:30
Speaker A
Uh, tank might not be happy about that, so yeah, obviously use your brain.
33:40
Speaker A
I'm using a lot of terms here and I'm being very specific, but I mean, Frost just really boils down to use your procs as you get them.
33:50
Speaker A
Use your cooldowns as they come up and besides that, you're kind of just using Ice Lance to pop six or more stacks of freezing.
34:00
Speaker A
Um, you know, that's, that's kind of like the bottom line, right, and you just don't want to be wasteful.
34:10
Speaker A
That's where all like the logic comes in, right, if you have your Frozen Orb ready, you want to spend your Brain Freeze before you use it.
34:20
Speaker A
That way you don't waste the Brain Freeze because you just got the Brain Freeze from the orb.
34:30
Speaker A
Um, if you're about to use your Ray of Frost, you want to make sure that you don't have any Fingers of Frost first.
34:40
Speaker A
You want to make sure you don't have, uh, over six freezing first because you're going to get more than 15 freezing from that Ray of Frost.
34:50
Speaker A
And other than that, you're just kind of trying to keep your cooldowns on cooldown.
35:00
Speaker A
Um, yeah, Frost is not really like a bursty cooldown spec.
35:10
Speaker A
It does have a lot of damage potential though, right, especially in, in like AoE scenarios.
35:20
Speaker A
Whenever you first get going and you're doing those first two rays back to back, uh, it's a ton of damage.
35:30
Speaker A
And it's, and it's very interesting as a spec because since you don't really have like a main cooldown and your Ray of Frost has charges.
35:40
Speaker A
You can essentially decide when it's best to have your Ray of Frost, as long as you aren't like holding Ray of Frost capped at two charges.
35:50
Speaker A
You can be a little bit flexible in when you choose to use it, and I like that a lot.
36:00
Speaker A
Um, but, um, probably the biggest pitfall of this spec is if you Ray of Frost something and then you interrupt it.
36:10
Speaker A
Or if you Ray of Frost something and then it dies instantly.
36:20
Speaker A
If either of those two things happen, I know if you've leveled a Frost Mage, you know exactly what I'm talking about, um, that's a pretty massive damage loss, right.
36:30
Speaker A
Like make sure that whenever you start your Ray of Frost, you have a plan for how to finish it.
36:40
Speaker A
My best recommendation is whenever you start your Ray of Frost, just like start looking for a spot you could shimmer to if you were to need to shimmer.
36:50
Speaker A
Right, because you're just channeling anyways, you can face away from the mob, just make sure that you don't have to stop casting it for any reason.
37:00
Speaker A
You want to get that full Ray out, um, and same goes for if you're casting like a Glacial Spike or any other long spell.
37:10
Speaker A
I mean, it's the same concept as like if you're hard casting Pyroblast, you want to make sure the cast finishes.
37:20
Speaker A
So just like have a plan for if something's about to happen to you, if you know you're about to get knocked back or disrupted, blinded, whatever.
37:30
Speaker A
Like just maybe don't use that Ray of Frost, right, maybe hold on to it for a little bit.
37:40
Speaker A
If you don't have a really good target for it, maybe just wait a little bit longer, right, just be mindful of where you're seeing those Ray of Frost.
37:50
Speaker A
The other big pitfall is Frozen Orb, um, it is now requiring a target, but it will kind of like slowly follow the mob that you target with it.
38:00
Speaker A
Uh, but it will still kind of slow down whenever it reaches its destination.
38:10
Speaker A
So if you Frozen Orb and then everything runs away from the orb, it is going to chase after those mobs, but it's going to be very slow.
38:20
Speaker A
Right, and so it's always better to lead the mobs with your Frozen Orb, kind of put it like in the front.
38:30
Speaker A
That way it doesn't have to play catch up the entire time, right, because Frozen Orb is your, is your best damaging spell per time spent.
38:40
Speaker A
Like the one global you do for Frozen Orb just gets a ton of damage, you're going to see it like very, very highly represented in your breakdown.
38:50
Speaker A
Not just in its own damage, but also in like the procs it gives you, so like it's very important that you're getting those Frozen Orbs to actually get full value.
39:00
Speaker A
And, yeah, that's, that's all kind of the concept of this Frost, again, we aren't using Blizzard because Blizzard doesn't really give us freezing.
39:10
Speaker A
It's just like flat AoE damage, and yes, it is somewhat worth it in like mass AoE.
39:20
Speaker A
But the tradeoff in my opinion is just not worth it, this build is doing basically the same amount of AoE damage.
39:30
Speaker A
And it is infinitely more useful for getting the priority damage out, which is like the thing that normally Arcane is known for, right.
39:40
Speaker A
But Frost has it now because of how freezing works, so it's pretty exceptional.
39:50
Speaker A
It doesn't really have high burst, but it does have better defensives than the other Mage specs, right.
40:00
Speaker A
You have two Ice Colds, you have two barriers, uh, this is a spec that's like very, very defensively strong compared to the other Mage specs.
40:10
Speaker A
Mage in general just kind of suffers when it comes to its defensives, it's not very sturdy anymore, they took away like most of our defensives.
40:20
Speaker A
Do I think Frost is going to be like the best spec in this raid, um, not necessarily.
40:30
Speaker A
There's a lot of bosses where I could see Fire being a better spec, uh, but I do think Frost has like a place.
40:40
Speaker A
And especially in heroic week before you get your tier bonus, I think Frost is going to be really, really strong.
40:50
Speaker A
In Mythic Plus, uh, yeah, it could be Arcane or Frost, but I honestly because of the defensives, I kind of prefer Frost.
41:00
Speaker A
I think a lot of players are going to kind of just fall into whatever their most comfortable with, wherever their comfort pick is.
41:10
Speaker A
Um, but I think if you go into Mythic Plus playing Frost, if you go into raid playing Frost, either way, you're probably going to have a pretty good time.
41:20
Speaker A
Actually quite nice, anyways, that's going to be it for today, so if you like this video, be sure to give it a thumbs up.

Uh, Norm.
41:41
Speaker A
What happened there?
41:42
Speaker A
No.
41:43
Speaker A
Sometimes you go to the casino and you come out with like five times the money you go in with.
41:44
Speaker A
Sometimes you come out with zero, you know.
41:45
Speaker A
It's just one of those days.
41:46
Speaker A
It broke procs like all jailers.
41:47
Speaker A
Oops, all jailers.
41:48
Speaker A
No, I think I just got a soul swipe with every single soul.
41:49
Speaker A
Yeah, you're so you just had a bunch of souls.
41:50
Speaker A
A lot of damage.
41:51
Speaker A
Oops, all soul swipe.
41:52
Speaker A
Imagine doing that, but also.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the new Frost Mage shatter mechanic in WoW Midnight?

The traditional shatter combos using Winter's Chill and Fingers of Frost have been replaced by a Freeze debuff applied by spells like Frostbolt and Flurry. Ice Lance consumes this debuff to cause a shatter explosion, dealing AoE damage.

What is the recommended opener for Frost Mage in this guide?

The opener starts with casting Glacial Spike before the pull, followed by Frozen Orb, a full channel of Ray of Frost, then a sequence of Flurry and two Ice Lances. This rotation is simple and performs nearly as well as more complex variations.

Which stats should Frost Mages prioritize for gearing?

Frost Mages should focus on critical strike as their highest stat to maximize potion effects, supported by mastery and haste. Versatility is less prioritized but often unavoidable.
