Welcome back. So today I have another new scholarship here, it's called The Lord Walston Scholarship. It is in England. And I'm going to take you through the application process. So this is a scholarship that funds you to pursue a master's degree. It pays your tuition fees, it pays your visa fees, travel expenses, and you're also going to get a monthly stipend throughout your studies.
00:25
Speaker A
If this is your first time here, this is the management diary and we usually get to share scholarships on a weekly basis. These are scholarships for international students and you can always be sure to find a new opportunity here.

So if this is your first time here, please consider hitting the subscribe button because I can guarantee you that you are never going to miss a new scholarship update. Last week we covered the Scottish Power Scholarship.
00:56
Speaker A
It's also a master's scholarship with the same kind of an offer. It gives you stipend and full fees to study in a UK university, a master's degree, but it also gives you a job after the masters, so you may want to check that out. So, what we do have here is a scholarship at the University of East Anglia.
01:48
Speaker A
And it funds, it is supposed to fund students from Africa to pursue a master's studies. And these students are going to be either permanently domiciled in Africa, or they are of African nationalities. So you can be an African nationality, but you're living outside Africa, so you merit for that.
02:24
Speaker A
And also, if you live outside Africa, or or you live within Africa permanently, this is also an opportunity for you, and you have until Monday, 23rd March 2026.
02:37
Speaker A
I'm going to take you through the application process, and as you will notice, this scholarship does not need a lot of grades for you. So you're only going to need to exit the entry requirements of the program, and that is going to be ideally a second class lower division, that is what you need to be accepted onto this program, and again, you should not be in receipt of any other scholarship or award.
03:32
Speaker A
Yeah. So, let's have a look at this. So the Master of Agriculture and Rural Development is a one-year master's, and you're going to take this program as a full-time student in the UK. So it means if you're planning to apply for this scholarship, then you should be ready to travel to the UK. This is the information about the program, and we are going to come back to this information a short while later when we are going to look into the program.
04:08
Speaker A
Okay, into the scholarship application, because some of this information we will use it to write the scholarship essays, and I'm going to take you through that. But I want us to look at the entry requirements for this program. So you're going to need a bachelor's degree, a second class lower division and above. So in the UK system, 2.2 means second class lower.
05:20
Speaker A
And you can always convert this based on how you are ranked, okay, how your degrees are classified in your country. For example, if you're doing a 4.0 GPA or a 5.0 CGPA, then you can do the conversion appropriately, and this can be done online, so you may want to check that out. Again, you can also have a second upper.
05:56
Speaker A
Of course, they are saying a minimum of 2.2, it means you can also have a second upper or a first class degree. So a second upper is going to be written as 2.1. A first class degree is going to be written as one. So that is for UK students. For international students, the same case. UK Bachelor's degree - 2.2 or equivalent, and you are good to go. Now, you're also going to to require an English language proficiency, and there's quite a list here, so you will have to check that out.
06:50
Speaker A
Before, but there are other alternatives like a pre-sessional English uh session, where you're going to, in case you don't meet those requirements, you're going to first to have to to be in the system for some time to just learn English before you transition to your master's degree. Now, before you apply, the first thing you'll need to do is you'll have to submit your application for this master's degree, the Master of Arts.
07:32
Speaker A
And I will leave the link in the video description so that you can find all the necessary information. But technically, you will need to submit an an admission or an application for admission for MA Agriculture and Rural Development. Once you submit this application, you're going to be given a student number.
08:12
Speaker A
This student number is what you're going to use now to apply for this scholarship. I think that is all you need to know about the master's program, the rest you can do the reading for yourself.
08:26
Speaker A
Now, let's look at the the scholarship here. Again, we usually post these new scholarships every single week.
08:33
Speaker A
So, if you hit subscribe, of course, you are never going to miss the new updates. Be sure to find one again next week. So, what we have here is The Lord Walston Scholarship application for 2026. And I'm just going to give you a brief of a site of what is expected, but we are going to dwell more on the essays.
09:10
Speaker A
There are three essays, three plus one. So that's where we're going to spend some time. So the application number, as I mentioned, you needed to submit your master's degree application here. So once you submit this application, you're going to be given an application number, and that is what you're going to put here. It's going to be found in your email, so that's not a complex thing.
10:02
Speaker A
Then you know your name and, okay, you know your full name, that's the first and last name, so you're going to input it here, and then your email address, whether it's a Gmail or a Yahoo or whatever, just because it's written company.com, does not mean that it has to be an official domain. So you can be like your first name.your last [email protected] or something of a similar sort. Then enter your date of birth here. Then your fee status here is going to be international, because this is for Africans or students who are domiciled in Africa.
10:45
Speaker A
And that is most likely going to be an international fees. Master's course you have applied for. So you're going to have to copy this, and then, so you copy this, and then input it here. Then have you applied to study full-time or part-time? This is supposed to be a full-time program, so click here the full-time. And then after that, this scholarship is for applicants who have applied to study a course in this school. So you're going to copy this school as it is, and then input it here, because that is where the program or that master's program falls. Where are you coming from?
11:59
Speaker A
So the country or nationality. I'm from Uganda, so I'm going to input my my country of origin here as Uganda. But now I live in Botswana, so I'm going to say country of residence, it's in Botswana, but the country of birth is going to be where I was born. So there is a difference between nationality and and country of birth. If if you have two or dual nationalities, you probably know what that means. But in most instances, if you have a nationality of one country, just input what you do have for your home country. Then after that, where do you live? Input your details here. Then after that, provide your address. So this address is what they are going to use for correspondence.
13:35
Speaker A
Either they are going to be sending your letters there, they're going to be sending any other necessary information. Probably, even your certificate, if you don't get to update it in future, even your certificates might be sent there in future. So that's if you don't get to update. But uh, once you provide your address, that is the street address, the line address, so this is line one, line two, it depends with how the addresses in your countries are. But technically, this should be something like uh, some name, PO Box, A B C D, then the city, where is it? Maybe it is uh in Kampala, Uganda. Then after that, the postal code or zip code, maybe it is 200650. Then after that, the country or region, where do you come from? That's Uganda, and then the county or state. Then after that, you're going to to to state your predicted and you should be keen on how this is formatted. So the first thing is, is your grade predicted or realized? Predicted is simply means you are an undergraduate or you are still undertaking your program. Realized is you have received all your results and even actually have graduated. So or you have final confirmation of what it is. So you could input realized if you have the degree. Then 2.1, that is second class upper division. If it is a second lower, it's going to 2.2. If it is a first class, just put one without anything. Then after that, you can put into bracket the the percentage or the grades that you have you are you are given. Maybe it is a a 2.2, second class upper a lower division of 58%. So it's going to be 58%. Then comma, the name of the program. BSC something, aquatic, whatever. So it depends on the program that you're going to input here, and then your personal details, that's going to change, that's why I don't want to insist on specific examples. Then after that, you're going to input the name of the institution where you got those qualification, and then any relevant work experience you have in this field, and I recommend you can also use things like internship and attachment experience.
15:38
Speaker A
Um, for my good friends from West Africa, you can also use your NYSC experience. It can serve you very well. Now, this is a need-based scholarship. What do we mean when we say it is a need-based scholarship? A need-based scholarship is a scholarship that is meant to fund students who cannot afford to pay for their studies without needing assistance, or rather, who who demonstrate genuine financial need.
16:40
Speaker A
Now, you are given here 500 words to explain why you think you have a genuine financial need. And you're going to have to write this in narrative form to explain your personal circumstances. You know your personal circumstances. So you're going to have to sit down and write this carefully. After you've written all this information down, you have only 500 words. I would recommend you try to use those words uh very wisely, because one, you want to describe the challenges that you faced. Two, you want to describe how you overcame those challenges to become who you are today. And three, you want to demonstrate that with this opportunity, you could be able to accomplish something that you couldn't have otherwise accomplished. That sounds like a very short statement. Sounds like something very simple.
18:32
Speaker A
But if you think about it carefully, it is actually a lot of information to be contained in one essay. So 500 words it is, but it is a lot and again, it is so little.
18:42
Speaker A
So you have to think carefully and structure what you're writing. If you want to use LLMs, warn to you because sometimes these things are not going to present you in the best way possible. I can guarantee you that. Then the next thing is, explain in no more than 500 words, why you should be awarded this scholarship.
19:02
Speaker A
Now, on this, on this front, you are required first to talk about your academic history, your course ambitions, career goals, and how this scholarship will help. I will also add some things into this. Remember to talk about things like your leadership, volunteering, talk about um, any competitions that you've participated in, and actually you've come out uh as um a winner or maybe you lost and you learned a few lessons out of that. You may also want to talk about how the program or the university fits into you.
20:30
Speaker A
Because remember, this is a two-way thing. One, they're trying to find a suitable candidate for the program, but again, you are also trying to find a suitable program for your for like your your future ambitions. So you may also want to talk about the program in detail in terms of the following. So come here and look at this program. As you can see, there's something they say, why you choose us? So this is about the program, like, they have, they were the first overall for research quality in Development Studies. And you're going to quote something called REF. If you click this link, it's called to give you the research excellence framework.
21:54
Speaker A
So this is a framework that is used to rank universities in terms of their research output. So you may want to go and quote the exact numbers so that they can know you actually spent your time doing that. Then it was ranked 11th worldwide for Development Studies. You may want to talk about this. So this is information just about the program. 21st in the UK. So this is the university ranking. Once you've talked about that, talk about the program in terms of the modules that are offered.
22:32
Speaker A
Because these modules are going to define the kind of skills that you're going to get, and I'm going to talk about that later in a short while. But then you're going to find information about the kind of information you're going to get from these modules, and in case you have any research or a dissertation topic in mind, you may want to talk about that also, because it is one thing that also tells you and them that you both of you are going to be a good fit for each other. Once that is done, and it's provided, you can also come and talk about the university. So information about the university, you can always find it under the official website under international students. So under that, you're going to find information about, for example, they have 3,500 international students in the university from 100 countries. So in short, if I'm going to to to summarize that into one word, it's called cultural diversity.
24:15
Speaker A
Like there is a lot of different people from different countries, so they're going to be a lot of a good mix of culture. There's going to be a good uh front for networking. So as an international student, you're going to have that opportunity to do all this. And then you can see here, they have guaranteed accommodation, and the university is actually located in the countryside. So you're going to have access to this, especially being an agriculture student, that might be something of interest.
24:56
Speaker A
That is all I could say about the university, and you can also go out there and find more information to input under this part here. Why you should be awarded the funding.
25:10
Speaker A
Now, explain in no more than 500 words, what are your future career plans, and how do you intend to use your UEA qualification to achieve them? Now, how I usually would how I usually would approach this is I'd look at it from the point of first, I'm going to put forward a problem statement.
25:22
Speaker A
And then once I put forward a problem statement, I'll come here and look at the modules and see what kind of skills I'm going to get from this that are going to help me solve that problem. So, for example, I could say we don't have proper policies, agricultural policies, but there's a module here called Sustainability, Policy and Practices. Then I can now proceed to to discuss how I'm going to involve in a career that is going to solve that problem in the short term. Then, how that could lead me to solve something in the medium term, and how that is going to help me to do something in the long run. Now, there are a lot of things here, for example, Globalized Agriculture and Food Systems.
27:17
Speaker A
You can want to.
27:19
Speaker A
You may want to talk about how there's an imbalance in export of products from different parts of the world. Maybe some parts are selling processed goods, others are selling raw materials, so they don't get a fair play in the market. You can talk about that kind of information. That is just identifying the problem statement. Now, let's look at the kind of career plans you can have. Short term should mostly be focused on solving the problem statement that you've just introduced based on the skills you learned from this module. Now, I hope that makes sense. In the medium term, it should be led. So the medium term, the short term simply leads to the medium term. And it it could be directly linked, like a step function, where the first thing you did led to the next one.
28:53
Speaker A
And you may also want to talk about things like international collaboration, because now you're going to be an international environment, and you're going to have good exposure, so it means you can also foster international collaboration between your university or the department or students within the department or the program, and whatever goals you want to achieve in future.
29:14
Speaker A
Also, you can look at things like what is the University of East Anglia doing outside the UK? Um, can you, can you be of use to that kind of uh system? So that is something you can always talk about. The next, we also have the long-term plans. Here you can be as ambitious as possible. You can talk about anything you want to be the president, you want to be the minister, you want to be, but again, it should be something that you can it's achievable, so don't talk about things that are not achievable, but it best be said, try to link how your program is going to lead you to achieve whatever you're going to mention.
30:20
Speaker A
Finally, do you have a plan to return to your home country upon graduating from this course? Damn yes. Like, make sure you mention it is yes, because ideally, the main objective of the program is they're trying to do what we call talent development in developing countries. So if you you say no, you're definitely not going to be the best candidate because they have not achieved the objective. So say yes, but when you go there, you will figure it out if you want to stay or don't, that's up to you. And finally, you have a data protection statement where you're going to consent here and submit.
30:57
Speaker A
And you'd have finished your part, so you'd be hoping to receive a positive feedback from these guys, and that is going to come to you very soon. I wish you all the best as you are applying, and as we are just about to part, please consider hitting the subscribe button because the same way you're going to expect a positive message from these guys, it's the same way I find it really, really supportive for you guys to be part of the management diary. So please, subscribe. And I hope to see you next one on the next week. If you're interested to be in Italy, then, of course, you can see I have a new tab here. This is another new scholarship coming up. So I'll see you on that one. And bye-bye. Good luck with your application.
