Speaker A
Cornerstone Chapel. Today we gather as a church. We worship together. We study God's Word. Cornerstone Chapel.
00:42
Speaker B
We're in the Gospel of Luke, we're at chapter 18, and I'm going to look at a story at the end of chapter 18.
00:55
Speaker B
That starts at verse 35. Luke 18, starting at verse 35.
01:03
Speaker B
It says, then it happened, as he, that's Jesus,
01:10
Speaker B
was coming near Jericho, that a certain blind man sat by the road begging.
01:20
Speaker B
And hearing a multitude passing by, he asked what it meant.
01:30
Speaker B
And so they told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by.
01:40
Speaker B
And he cried out saying, Jesus, Son of David,
01:46
Speaker B
have mercy on me.
01:50
Speaker B
And then those who went before warned him that he should be quiet.
01:57
Speaker B
But he cried out all the more, Son of David,
02:02
Speaker B
have mercy on me.
02:05
Speaker B
And so Jesus stood still and commanded him to be brought to him.
02:10
Speaker B
And when he had come near, he asked him saying, what do you want me to do for you?
02:17
Speaker B
And he said, Lord, that I may receive my sight.
02:21
Speaker B
And then Jesus said to him, receive your sight, your faith has made you well.
02:28
Speaker B
And immediately he received his sight and followed him, glorifying God.
02:35
Speaker B
And all the people when they saw it, gave praise to God.
02:40
Speaker B
I've entitled my teaching today, I need a miracle.
02:45
Speaker B
There's some of you who are desperate for a miracle.
02:50
Speaker B
And as we approach this story, I want us to approach it with the idea in mind.
03:00
Speaker B
That the Bible says that God is the same yesterday, today and forever.
03:06
Speaker B
He's still a miracle working God.
03:10
Speaker B
So what is your miracle today that you need?
03:13
Speaker B
So let's pause and pray and then we'll talk about this story.
03:18
Speaker B
Lord, we thank you as we just quiet ourselves before you today and open up your word together.
03:24
Speaker B
We thank you for this story, a reminder that you are a miracle working God.
03:30
Speaker B
Here's a desperate man who desperately needed you.
03:36
Speaker B
And you, Lord, met his need so miraculously.
03:41
Speaker B
And, Lord, you know that there are some desperate needs represented here among us.
03:49
Speaker B
And those who are watching online.
03:51
Speaker B
And those who will later listen to this.
03:54
Speaker B
And we look to you as that same miracle working God.
04:00
Speaker B
And we appeal to you today too for whatever our miraculous need is.
04:06
Speaker B
And so, Lord, as we just approach this story with with faith and and humility.
04:12
Speaker B
We just ask you to use it to speak to our hearts today.
04:17
Speaker B
We love you and we praise you together in Jesus' name.
04:21
Speaker B
And everybody said.
04:22
Speaker B
Amen.
04:25
Speaker B
Well, this story takes place as verse 37 tells us, uh, on the outskirts of the city of Jericho.
04:33
Speaker B
Now, Jericho is mentioned often in the Bible.
04:39
Speaker B
Jericho is located about 15 miles east of the city of Jerusalem in Israel.
04:49
Speaker B
It is, uh, quite a bit lower in terms of sea level than Jerusalem.
04:54
Speaker B
Uh, Jericho was about 800 feet below sea level.
05:01
Speaker B
And, um, it is named in Hebrew, not with a J.
05:08
Speaker B
But spelled with a Y.
05:10
Speaker B
There is no J in the Hebrew alphabet.
05:12
Speaker B
And so it is spelled and pronounced Jericho.
05:17
Speaker B
And Jericho in Hebrew means fragrant.
05:20
Speaker B
And it was so named because there would be balsam and cypress and roses.
05:30
Speaker B
That would grow naturally there in Jericho.
05:35
Speaker B
And it would give it a very fragrant aroma.
05:39
Speaker B
Four times in the Bible, Jericho was called the city of Palms.
05:45
Speaker B
Because it was also there that date palms would would grow.
05:51
Speaker B
And Jericho is surrounded by several freshwater springs.
05:56
Speaker B
And, uh, because water is such a precious commodity in any culture.
06:06
Speaker B
But especially in a very arid culture like the Middle East.
06:10
Speaker B
It made Jericho for a place where many civilizations over the years have settled.
06:18
Speaker B
And as a result, Jericho was actually the oldest city in the world.
06:23
Speaker B
Damascus, Syria is considered the oldest continually occupied city in the world.
06:30
Speaker B
But Jericho is considered the oldest city in the world.
06:34
Speaker B
In 1994, Jericho was handed over by the Israeli government to the Palestinian Authority.
06:43
Speaker B
As part of a peace for land kind of a deal.
06:47
Speaker B
Um, and in 1994, when that transaction happened, that transfer of of the territory.
06:55
Speaker B
From the Israelis to the Palestinians in 1994, my friend, who's also been here.
07:01
Speaker B
A couple months ago to fill the pulpit for me.
07:04
Speaker B
Amir Sarfati, who's an Israeli, uh, Jewish believer in Jesus.
07:10
Speaker B
Amir was actually the deputy governor of Jericho during that peaceful time of transition.
07:16
Speaker B
In 1994.
07:18
Speaker B
And so today, Jericho is in the hands and in part of the territory of the Palestinian territory.
07:26
Speaker B
Uh, of the West Bank and about 20,000 Arabs live there today.
07:30
Speaker B
That's the scene of our story.
07:32
Speaker B
And so this ancient city, uh, Jesus is passing through on his way to Jerusalem.
07:40
Speaker B
It'll be his last visit to Jerusalem just prior to his crucifixion.
07:44
Speaker B
He's making pilgrimage there with his disciples.
07:48
Speaker B
It's it's around the Passover feast.
07:51
Speaker B
So here he comes passing by Jericho.
07:54
Speaker B
And he encounters a blind man who is sitting by the road begging.
08:01
Speaker B
Now, let me interrupt this story to tell kind of a funny little.
08:04
Speaker B
Uh, true story and then we'll come back to to our Bible study.
08:08
Speaker B
But years ago, when, uh, our church was was new.
08:14
Speaker B
The first seven years of our church, we were at Simpson Middle School.
08:20
Speaker B
And then after that, we bought a small little, um, mini mall.
08:27
Speaker B
It was like a little strip mall just down the road on Miller Drive by the Leesburg Airport.
08:31
Speaker B
And, um, many of you used to go there before we moved into this building.
08:35
Speaker B
And and built as a mini mall, uh, it had all glass on the front of the building.
08:41
Speaker B
And, uh, for storefronts originally.
08:44
Speaker B
Um, so when we bought it, we had to obviously get, you know, shades for all across the front of the building.
08:52
Speaker B
Because, you know, the bright sunlight would come in.
08:55
Speaker B
So we made an appointment with a commercial, uh, company.
09:00
Speaker B
Who was going to measure the windows and, you know, give us an estimate on what it would cost to to put shades all over the place.
09:06
Speaker B
So I had forgotten about the actual appointment.
09:11
Speaker B
And, uh, so one day, my admin comes into my office.
09:16
Speaker B
And she says to me, hey, the blind guy is here.
09:23
Speaker B
And and I I said, what blind guy?
09:25
Speaker B
And she says, don't you remember you had an appointment with him?
09:28
Speaker B
I said, I I I don't remember that.
09:31
Speaker B
And and I'm thinking to myself, and why are you, that's kind of cruel to be referring to this guy.
09:40
Speaker B
By his disability.
09:43
Speaker B
And so, so I say to her, I said, well, does he have a name?
09:49
Speaker B
She says, who, the blind guy?
09:51
Speaker B
I said, yeah.
09:52
Speaker B
Does he have a name?
09:54
Speaker B
And she says, I'm I'm sorry, I didn't get his name.
09:59
Speaker B
Um, and and I said, okay, well, listen.
10:03
Speaker B
When you go to get him and lead him back here to my office.
10:10
Speaker B
Could you please ask his name so that I will know?
10:13
Speaker B
And she says, yeah, sure.
10:15
Speaker B
And she says, by the way, remember, when he comes to your office.
10:19
Speaker B
He also has to take a look at your windows.
10:23
Speaker B
I said,
10:29
Speaker B
How can a blind guy take a look at and what?
10:34
Speaker B
Oh.
10:36
Speaker B
And then it connect.
10:38
Speaker B
The blind guy.
10:40
Speaker B
Okay.
10:41
Speaker B
Send him back.
10:44
Speaker B
So, for people who might be a little dense like me sometimes.
10:51
Speaker B
I just want you to know, this story we're reading about is about a guy who cannot see.
10:56
Speaker B
Okay, not a guy who works in window treatments.
10:59
Speaker B
All right.
11:01
Speaker B
So that's settled.
11:04
Speaker B
Luke does not tell us the name of the blind guy.
11:11
Speaker B
He just says he's a blind guy.
11:13
Speaker B
But Mark, when Mark tells us the story in Mark chapter 10.
11:20
Speaker B
He tells us his name.
11:21
Speaker B
His name is Bartimaeus.
11:23
Speaker B
And Bartimaeus's name is original name.
11:27
Speaker B
It's from two words, Bar, son of Timaeus.
11:30
Speaker B
And Timaeus can translate either honor or humility.
11:35
Speaker B
So his name can translate son of honor or son of humility.
11:41
Speaker B
And the truth is that he lived out his name every day.
11:45
Speaker B
He was both the son of honor and the son of humility.
11:48
Speaker B
In this sense.
11:50
Speaker B
That every life has honor and dignity and value to God.
11:56
Speaker B
That his life had honor and value to God.
11:59
Speaker B
He was in that sense, the son of honor.
12:04
Speaker B
But he was also the son of humility.
12:06
Speaker B
Because there's nothing quite as humbling as being blind.
12:10
Speaker B
And having to beg for your life.
12:14
Speaker B
His very survival depended on begging.
12:19
Speaker B
And so he was also the son of humility.
12:23
Speaker B
And so here he is sitting along the roadside of Jericho.
12:27
Speaker B
Begging, begging for people to give him money.
12:30
Speaker B
Or to give him a cup of water.
12:33
Speaker B
Or to give him food.
12:35
Speaker B
Or to give him clothing.
12:37
Speaker B
If that was your condition in the day.
12:41
Speaker B
You were completely dependent upon the generosity of other people.
12:45
Speaker B
You would just have to beg literally for your survival.
12:50
Speaker B
And so here he is begging along the roadway.
12:54
Speaker B
And he's situated in a very prominent place.
12:59
Speaker B
Because there were a few major trade routes through Israel.
13:03
Speaker B
And as a result of these trade routes, there were three major towns.
13:10
Speaker B
Where customs booths were set up to tax the people like a toll.
13:17
Speaker B
As people would come through that particular, uh, um, region.
13:22
Speaker B
That particular, uh, trade route.
13:25
Speaker B
Uh, if you remember, Jesus, one of the disciples he selected was Levi, Matthew.
13:30
Speaker B
He was a tax collector.
13:31
Speaker B
And Jesus took him from the tax collector's booth in Capernaum.
13:36
Speaker B
Capernaum was one of three towns where the customs booth was set up.
13:40
Speaker B
In addition was Caesarea.
13:42
Speaker B
And the third place was Jericho.
13:45
Speaker B
That's where the custom booth was set up.
13:46
Speaker B
In other words, this guy, Bartimaeus, has positioned himself at a place where there's a lot of foot traffic.
13:52
Speaker B
There's a lot of people coming through.
13:54
Speaker B
This is a trade route.
13:56
Speaker B
There's a customs booth here.
13:58
Speaker B
And so he's in a position where he's potentially going to come in contact with a lot of people who might be able to give to him.
14:06
Speaker B
Now, we don't know how long he's been blind.
14:10
Speaker B
The Bible doesn't say that he was born blind.
14:15
Speaker B
Maybe he acquired his blindness through an illness of some kind.
14:18
Speaker B
We don't know.
14:20
Speaker B
How long he's been in this condition.
14:22
Speaker B
What we do know is is that he relied on his auditory senses.
14:26
Speaker B
And what is commonly understood is that when some person has a deficiency in one area of their senses.
14:35
Speaker B
The other ones commonly compensate and are heightened.
14:39
Speaker B
And so this guy has a heightened, no doubt, auditory sense.
14:44
Speaker B
And the Bible says here that as he's sitting here blind along the road begging.
14:51
Speaker B
That he hears, he hears verse 36.
14:54
Speaker B
A lot of commotion, he hears a multitude passing by.
15:00
Speaker B
Now, he doesn't know what all the commotion is.
15:03
Speaker B
But he hears it.
15:05
Speaker B
There's this rumble of pedestrian traffic.
15:10
Speaker B
There's no doubt the commotion of voices that he's hearing.
15:14
Speaker B
Perhaps the dust of the of the road is being kicked up and into his nostrils.
15:20
Speaker B
He's perceiving a lot here.
15:24
Speaker B
Something is happening.
15:26
Speaker B
What is going on?
15:28
Speaker B
And so he asks.
15:30
Speaker B
And no doubt he's asking somebody who has sight.
15:35
Speaker B
Who can tell him what's going on.
15:39
Speaker B
And so verse 37 says, he was told, here's what he's told.
15:44
Speaker B
Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.
15:48
Speaker B
Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.
15:50
Speaker B
That's what all the commotion is about.
15:52
Speaker B
People are crowding around Jesus, they're following after him.
15:58
Speaker B
There's, you know, he's he's, you know, seen as somebody who's, you know, become very popular.
16:06
Speaker B
He's about to be crucified.
16:08
Speaker B
But in the moment, he's very popular.
16:11
Speaker B
So he's attracted a large crowd here.
16:15
Speaker B
And so when the people tell this guy, tell Bartimaeus.
16:21
Speaker B
Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.
16:25
Speaker B
Bartimaeus cries out for him.
16:29
Speaker B
But I want you to notice that when he cries out for Jesus.
16:34
Speaker B
He does not refer to him as Jesus of Nazareth.
16:40
Speaker B
He cries out to him, referring to him as Jesus, Son of David.
16:45
Speaker B
Now, why is this important in your Bibles?
16:47
Speaker B
It is important to note.
16:50
Speaker B
Because listen, Jesus of Nazareth is the name of our Lord.
16:56
Speaker B
And the town where he grew up.
16:59
Speaker B
So it tells us who he was and where he grew up.
17:02
Speaker B
But Jesus, Son of David.
17:06
Speaker B
That title, Son of David, was a Messianic title.
17:10
Speaker B
In our Old Testaments, the Jewish scripture prophesied that the Messiah.
17:16
Speaker B
Would be a descendant of King David.
17:20
Speaker B
And Jesus could lay claim to his being a descendant of David.
17:25
Speaker B
Through both his adoptive dad, Joseph, and his biological mom, Mary.
17:31
Speaker B
Because if you look at the biological genealogical records of Jesus in Luke 3 and in Matthew 1.
17:38
Speaker B
It tells us that Joseph, the adoptive dad of Jesus.
17:44
Speaker B
Okay, because Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit.
17:49
Speaker B
That Joseph, the adoptive dad of Jesus, was a descendant of King David through David's son, Solomon.
17:57
Speaker B
And that Mary, the biological mother of Jesus, was a descendant of King David through David's son, Nathan.
18:05
Speaker B
So that between the two, Jesus is fully the son of David.
18:12
Speaker B
Both legally and biologically.
18:17
Speaker B
And so thus, when Bartimaeus is describing to him a Messianic title.
18:25
Speaker B
What he's saying to us is that he recognizes Jesus as not just from Nazareth.
18:32
Speaker B
But from God.
18:35
Speaker B
This is the Messiah.
18:37
Speaker B
This is God in flesh.
18:40
Speaker B
This is the long anticipated one who has come to redeem the world.
18:47
Speaker B
Very different.
18:50
Speaker B
It's not just Jesus of Nazareth.
18:53
Speaker B
He is Jesus, Son of David, because he is the Messiah.
18:58
Speaker B
So, I'm going to share five things from this story using Bartimaeus as an example.
19:05
Speaker B
For the miracle that you might need, that I might need.
19:10
Speaker B
And the first thing we learn here is that he believed that Jesus is a miracle working God.
19:16
Speaker B
That's why he refers to him by the title Son of David.
19:21
Speaker B
He ascribes unto him the dignity of the title.
19:25
Speaker B
Because it declares the divinity of the Lord.
19:31
Speaker B
And so here he is, Son of David, Son of David.
19:37
Speaker B
Very different.
19:41
Speaker B
This is where our miracle begins too.
19:46
Speaker B
If we need a miracle from the Lord.
19:52
Speaker B
Then we need to understand who he really is.
19:56
Speaker B
Now, the word miracle has been so overused in our culture.
20:00
Speaker B
We have miracle whip, miracle grow.
20:04
Speaker B
Miracle ear.
20:06
Speaker B
We have Smokey Robinson and the miracles.
20:08
Speaker B
I mean, there's a lot of stuff that we've overused the word miracle.
20:14
Speaker B
It's kind of diluted the term.
20:16
Speaker B
So the kind of miracle that I'm talking about, the kind of miracle that's in this story.
20:22
Speaker B
The biblical kind.
20:25
Speaker B
Is when the supernatural hand of God intervenes in the natural world of man.
20:31
Speaker B
A true miracle is divine intervention.
20:35
Speaker B
It's when something happens that cannot be explained by human ingenuity.
20:41
Speaker B
Or natural means, but can only be attributed to the divine intervention of God.
20:46
Speaker B
See, if you believe that Jesus was just Jesus of Nazareth.
20:53
Speaker B
Then you think he's just another historical person along the lines of Buddha and Confucius and Muhammad.
21:01
Speaker B
And if you think that he was just another historical figure along the lines of Buddha and Confucius and Muhammad.
21:09
Speaker B
Then you're unlikely to receive the kind of miracle that those guys produced.
21:14
Speaker B
Which is zero.
21:16
Speaker B
Right?
21:18
Speaker B
None of them did any miracles.
21:21
Speaker B
The followers of Muhammad about 150 to 200 years later.
21:29
Speaker B
Came up with some miracles that they said that he did.
21:33
Speaker B
But in the Quran, it mentions that Muhammad did zero miracles.
21:39
Speaker B
But in the same Quran, it mentions that Jesus did several.
21:44
Speaker B
So, if you just want to look at Jesus as this historical figure.
21:51
Speaker B
And you put him on par with other historical figures.
21:57
Speaker B
Then you're not likely to get the kind of miracle that you desperately need.
22:02
Speaker B
It's only when we see him and know him.
22:05
Speaker B
As, oh, he is still the miracle working God.
22:10
Speaker B
He is the son of David.
22:13
Speaker B
The son of God.
22:16
Speaker B
The Messiah.
22:18
Speaker B
And so Bartimaeus starts to shout this out.
22:21
Speaker B
He's recognizing.
22:23
Speaker B
This is a miracle working God.
22:25
Speaker B
This is Jesus.
22:26
Speaker B
This is Son of David.
22:28
Speaker B
This is a miracle working God.
22:30
Speaker B
And he begins to shout this out.
22:33
Speaker B
Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.
22:37
Speaker B
Which is the second important thing we see here.
22:40
Speaker B
He appealed to the mercy of God.
22:43
Speaker B
Now, mercy simply means compassion for those who are suffering.
22:47
Speaker B
And God is full of that.
22:50
Speaker B
He has a lot of compassion for people who are suffering.
22:53
Speaker B
The Bible says in Psalm 86:15, but you, oh Lord, are a God full of compassion.
23:01
Speaker B
And gracious, long suffering and abundant in mercy and truth.
23:07
Speaker B
And in Psalm 118:29, it says, oh, give thanks to the Lord.
23:13
Speaker B
For he is good, for his mercy endures forever.
23:18
Speaker B
How many of you are thankful that there's no shortage of mercy with God?
23:22
Speaker B
Let me just see your hands.
23:24
Speaker B
Absolutely, praise God.
23:26
Speaker B
Because we need his mercy.
23:28
Speaker B
He's a merciful God.
23:30
Speaker B
He is touched by our infirmities.
23:32
Speaker B
He is acquainted with our sorrows.
23:35
Speaker B
He understands our grief.
23:37
Speaker B
He knows our needs.
23:39
Speaker B
And with that in compassion, with that kind of compassion.
23:46
Speaker B
He has mercy for us.
23:48
Speaker B
And when he decides to do a miraculous thing for us.
23:54
Speaker B
Which is his prerogative.
23:55
Speaker B
When God wants to do something miraculous.
23:59
Speaker B
How he wants to do it.
24:02
Speaker B
It is not based on the merit of the person.
24:07
Speaker B
It is based on the mercy of God.
24:12
Speaker B
It's not like any of us, you know, deserve or qualify.
24:17
Speaker B
Or there's something really charming about any of us.
24:21
Speaker B
That warrants a miracle.
24:23
Speaker B
God gives us miracles because of his compassion toward us.
24:27
Speaker B
Because he's a merciful God.
24:30
Speaker B
That's it.
24:32
Speaker B
He's a merciful God.
24:35
Speaker B
And he loves to do compassionate things for people.
24:39
Speaker B
And so Bartimaeus understood that about God's character.
24:43
Speaker B
That he is merciful.
24:46
Speaker B
That he longs to show compassion to those who are suffering.
24:50
Speaker B
And it's on that basis that he appeals to the mercy of God.
24:54
Speaker B
When you need a miracle from God.
24:59
Speaker B
You need to have a right view of God.
25:03
Speaker B
If you are mad at God for your circumstance.
25:08
Speaker B
Or you blame God for your circumstance.
25:13
Speaker B
Or you think that God doesn't care that you're in your circumstance.
25:18
Speaker B
You're not believing that God is a merciful God.
25:21
Speaker B
You are believing that God is a detached God.
25:25
Speaker B
That he's an uncaring God.
25:27
Speaker B
That he's an insensitive God.
25:31
Speaker B
And so then why should you expect to get a miracle from that God?
25:36
Speaker B
We need to see him as a merciful God.
25:38
Speaker B
Despite our circumstances.
25:41
Speaker B
Bartimaeus understood that God is merciful.
25:44
Speaker B
And that's why he cries out for mercy.
25:46
Speaker B
And not just once, but twice.
25:49
Speaker B
Also in verse 39, at the end of verse 39.
25:52
Speaker B
It says, but he cried out all the more, second time.
25:58
Speaker B
Son of David, have mercy on me.
26:02
Speaker B
Now, why did he have to cry out all the more?
26:05
Speaker B
Why the second time?
26:07
Speaker B
Well, because the Bible tells us that the crowd near by him.
26:12
Speaker B
When he cried out the first time, told him to shut up.
26:17
Speaker B
Now, if there's young ears in the crowd, we're not supposed to say shut up.
26:22
Speaker B
But for the purpose of our study.
26:25
Speaker B
That's basically what they did.
26:28
Speaker B
If you look in verse 39, first part of verse 39.
26:32
Speaker B
It says, then those who went before warned him that he should be quiet.
26:40
Speaker B
So the first time when he asked, what's going on?
26:43
Speaker B
What's the hustle and bustle?
26:44
Speaker B
Oh, Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.
26:47
Speaker B
Oh, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.
26:50
Speaker B
Quiet, shut up.
26:53
Speaker B
That's why.
26:55
Speaker B
All the louder it says, he cries out again.
27:00
Speaker B
Son of David, have mercy on me.
27:04
Speaker B
Because the people in the crowd.
27:09
Speaker B
Doubted that he could really get the miracle that he desperately needed.
27:13
Speaker B
Either that or they or they doubted that Jesus was able to deliver the miracle.
27:16
Speaker B
That this guy needed.
27:19
Speaker B
Either case.
27:21
Speaker B
There were doubters in the crowd.
27:24
Speaker B
And I love about the fact that this guy didn't adhere to their caution about being quiet.
27:30
Speaker B
He just decided, forget you.
27:33
Speaker B
And he and he cries out even louder.
27:38
Speaker B
Son of David, have mercy on me.
27:41
Speaker B
Which is the third important thing we see here.
27:43
Speaker B
He dismissed the voices of doubt.
27:46
Speaker B
He dismissed the voices of doubt.
27:48
Speaker B
Can I just say to you.
27:53
Speaker B
That for the miracle that you need, that you're seeking God for.
27:58
Speaker B
There will be some doubters in the crowd around you.
28:03
Speaker B
There will be some people in your life.
28:08
Speaker B
Who will not encourage you.
28:11
Speaker B
In fact, who will discourage you.
28:13
Speaker B
Who will tell you, stop praying for that.
28:16
Speaker B
Stop believing God for that.
28:18
Speaker B
That's ridiculous.
28:21
Speaker B
Don't ask God for that.
28:23
Speaker B
Or else they'll doubt that God can really deliver for you.
28:26
Speaker B
What you need.
28:29
Speaker B
And so there are doubters in every crowd.
28:32
Speaker B
There are haters.
28:34
Speaker B
There are people who discourage.
28:36
Speaker B
There are people who will not be enthusiastic for you.
28:40
Speaker B
Do you know that the etymology of the word enthusiasm?
28:43
Speaker B
Is from two Greek words, and Theos.
28:46
Speaker B
Meaning in God.
28:49
Speaker B
There will be some people who are not in God at all about you.
28:55
Speaker B
And what you need from God.
28:58
Speaker B
Those are the doubters.
29:00
Speaker B
And those are the people who are going to try to discourage you.
29:02
Speaker B
And I love that Bartimaeus didn't just shut up and, okay, yeah, you're probably right.
29:07
Speaker B
He's just like, I'm sorry.
29:10
Speaker B
I'm going to cry out even louder.
29:13
Speaker B
Son of David, have mercy on me.
29:16
Speaker B
So, when the doubters come around you to discourage you.
29:19
Speaker B
Dismiss them.
29:21
Speaker B
Cry out even louder to Jesus.
29:25
Speaker B
Because they don't live in your desperate shoes.
29:30
Speaker B
You do.
29:31
Speaker B
So don't let them rob you of what God might do for you because you refuse to ask God for it.
29:39
Speaker B
Because they're discouraging you along the way.
29:42
Speaker B
You say, thank you very much.
29:45
Speaker B
But I'm going to still cry out to my God.
29:51
Speaker B
Because I'm desperate enough to seek him for what I need.
29:56
Speaker B
It reminds me of the story about this farmer.
29:58
Speaker B
That had this mule.
30:00
Speaker B
It was an old mule.
30:02
Speaker B
Really wasn't good for much of anything anymore.
30:04
Speaker B
And this old mule stumbled into the farmer's well.
30:09
Speaker B
Fell down into the well and there he was.
30:13
Speaker B
Braying, braying, braying all day long.
30:16
Speaker B
And the farmer was just like, you know what, this this mule is no good to me.
30:21
Speaker B
He's old and useless.
30:23
Speaker B
And this well is dried up.
30:25
Speaker B
It's no good either.
30:26
Speaker B
And so he decided, I'm going to just bury the old donkey and or the mule.
30:30
Speaker B
And put him out of his misery.
30:32
Speaker B
So he took a shovel and he just started digging dirt.
30:35
Speaker B
And throwing it down into the well.
30:38
Speaker B
Digging a shovel load of dirt.
30:40
Speaker B
Throwing it down into the well.
30:43
Speaker B
And as the story goes, this mule.
30:46
Speaker B
Every time a dirt load hit his back.
30:50
Speaker B
He would just shake it off and stand up.
30:54
Speaker B
Shake it off and stand up.
30:57
Speaker B
Until enough dirt had been thrown into that well and that mule just shook it off.
31:04
Speaker B
And stood on it until he got all the way up to the top and was able to crawl out of that well.
31:11
Speaker B
See, what was intended to bury him actually became a blessing.
31:15
Speaker B
Because it helped him to get where he needed to be.
31:19
Speaker B
And there's going to be some people who want to bury you with discouragement.
31:23
Speaker B
Oh, that's just ridiculous.
31:24
Speaker B
Don't believe God for this.
31:26
Speaker B
And who are you to trust God for that?
31:29
Speaker B
And believe him for this.
31:30
Speaker B
Listen.
31:32
Speaker B
Shake it off and step up.
31:36
Speaker B
Because God is still on the throne.
31:40
Speaker B
Don't listen to them.
31:42
Speaker B
You believe God for what he can do for you.
31:45
Speaker B
Now.
31:47
Speaker B
Amen.
31:49
Speaker B
Let me also say this.
31:53
Speaker B
That sometimes the voices of doubt are not simply from the crowd without.
32:01
Speaker B
But sometimes from our mind within.
32:06
Speaker B
These doubtful thoughts that creep in because the enemy likes to whisper lies to us.
32:13
Speaker B
You you're not going to get that.
32:14
Speaker B
You don't deserve that.
32:16
Speaker B
Who do you think you are even asking for that?
32:20
Speaker B
You've been down this road before.
32:22
Speaker B
A hundred times.
32:24
Speaker B
Why are you asking again?
32:25
Speaker B
Stop asking.
32:28
Speaker B
And doubt will creep into your own mind.
32:31
Speaker B
If not from without, from within.
32:36
Speaker B
And we have to take to heart, second Corinthians 10, verse 5.
32:40
Speaker B
Second Corinthians 10:5.
32:42
Speaker B
We demolish every argument and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God.
32:50
Speaker B
And we take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ.
32:57
Speaker B
Sometimes we just have to renounce those kind of thoughts.
33:00
Speaker B
Of doubt and fear that come into our own minds.
33:06
Speaker B
So whether it's from without or from within.
33:13
Speaker B
I love the way that Bartimaeus was like, I'm not listening to those who don't believe.
33:18
Speaker B
I'm not listening to the doubtful thoughts.
33:21
Speaker B
I'm going to cry out even louder.
33:23
Speaker B
When you start to feel discouraged.
33:27
Speaker B
Or there are people or your own self-talk is discouraging you.
33:31
Speaker B
And you're doubting about things.
33:33
Speaker B
That's the time when you should cry out even more to Jesus.
33:36
Speaker B
Cry out even more to Jesus.
33:39
Speaker B
And so in our story, though the people didn't think it worthwhile to bring this guy to Jesus.
33:43
Speaker B
Jesus did.
33:45
Speaker B
So when he hears the guy crying out.
33:48
Speaker B
Jesus, it says, stops and he tells people.
33:51
Speaker B
Go get this guy and bring him to me.
33:52
Speaker B
Look in your Bibles again, verse 40 to 42.
33:55
Speaker B
Verse 40, it says, so Jesus stood still and commanded him to be brought to him.
34:01
Speaker B
And when he had come near, he asked him saying, what do you want me to do for you?
34:06
Speaker B
Now notice that.
34:07
Speaker B
It's a very pointed question.
34:10
Speaker B
What do you want me to do for you?
34:13
Speaker B
And he said, Bartimaeus said, Lord, that I may receive my sight.
34:18
Speaker B
And then Jesus said to him, receive your sight, your faith has made you well.
34:23
Speaker B
Your faith has made you well.
34:25
Speaker B
Number four.
34:26
Speaker B
He exercised faith in God.
34:29
Speaker B
Now, faith.
34:30
Speaker B
Faith can be a tricky thing.
34:32
Speaker B
Because faith is not just, you know, chanting something over and over and over again.
34:37
Speaker B
In hopes that by chanting it, you can make it come to pass.
34:40
Speaker B
Okay.
34:42
Speaker B
That's faith in faith.
34:44
Speaker B
Faith is to be faith in God that he is able to do exceedingly abundantly.
34:50
Speaker B
Beyond what you could ever ask or imagine.
34:52
Speaker B
That's Ephesians 3:20.
34:54
Speaker B
It's having faith that God is great and magnificent and all powerful.
34:58
Speaker B
And that he can do whatever he wants, whenever he wants.
35:02
Speaker B
So my faith is in God's ability.
35:05
Speaker B
And then I rest in his results.
35:09
Speaker B
Because I have to believe Romans 8:28.
35:12
Speaker B
All things work together for good to them that love God and are called according to his purpose.
35:17
Speaker B
So, if I'm obedient to the Lord, then whatever I'm praying for.
35:24
Speaker B
If it happens or if it doesn't, if it happens when I want or later.
35:29
Speaker B
Whatever it might be, I'm going to trust that God because he is able to do exceedingly abundantly.
35:35
Speaker B
Is going to do for my good and for his glory.
35:39
Speaker B
According to his good purposes.
35:41
Speaker B
So I have faith in his ability.
35:44
Speaker B
And I leave the results to him.
35:46
Speaker B
And faith is hoping for something that we cannot see.
35:50
Speaker B
And that's, you know, it's Hebrews 11:1.
35:51
Speaker B
Faith is the substance of things hoped for.
35:55
Speaker B
The evidence of things not seen.
35:57
Speaker B
There there are certain miracles that you might need.
36:00
Speaker B
Or answers to prayer that you have that you're asking God for.
36:05
Speaker B
That you can't see yet.
36:07
Speaker B
You know, if you could see it.
36:08
Speaker B
Then you wouldn't need faith.
36:10
Speaker B
We're asking God for things, we're pleading with God, we're desperate with God.
36:15
Speaker B
For things that we cannot see that are not here yet.
36:19
Speaker B
But that's part of faith.
36:21
Speaker B
That's part of trusting him.
36:23
Speaker B
And and I love the way that Jesus in this story invites Bartimaeus to be specific.
36:29
Speaker B
God wants us to be specific.
36:32
Speaker B
Jesus looks at him.
36:34
Speaker B
You know, Jesus, he he he's obviously, you know, God in flesh.
36:38
Speaker B
So it's not like he didn't know.
36:41
Speaker B
Like, what's your deal?
36:43
Speaker B
You know, he he but he asks Bartimaeus.
36:46
Speaker B
To give Bartimaeus the opportunity to be specific with his request.
36:51
Speaker B
What does he want me to do for you?
36:53
Speaker B
Like, imagine that.
36:54
Speaker B
Jesus just shows up and cart Blanche.
36:56
Speaker B
What do you want me to do for you?
36:58
Speaker B
Be specific with your prayers.
37:00
Speaker B
Ask the Lord, this is what I need.
37:02
Speaker B
And and so.
37:04
Speaker B
When Jesus asked Bartimaeus, what do you want me to do for you?
37:07
Speaker B
He he was specific.
37:10
Speaker B
He said in verse 41, I want to receive my sight.
37:13
Speaker B
And oh, what a glorious day this was for him.
37:16
Speaker B
Because verse 43 says, and immediately he received his sight and followed him.
37:20
Speaker B
Glorifying him.
37:23
Speaker B
Followed him, glorifying him.
37:25
Speaker B
That's point number five.
37:26
Speaker B
He gave God all the glory.
37:28
Speaker B
He was careful to give glory to where glory was due.
37:31
Speaker B
And to give honor where honor was due.
37:33
Speaker B
The Bible says in first Chronicles 16:29.
37:36
Speaker B
Give to the Lord the glory due his name.
37:40
Speaker B
In Psalm 115, verse 1, not to us, oh Lord, not to us.
37:45
Speaker B
But to your name be the glory because of your love and faithfulness.
37:51
Speaker B
You remember the story a few weeks ago of the.
37:55
Speaker B
The 10 lepers and Jesus healed all 10.
37:58
Speaker B
They went away to show themselves to the priest.
38:01
Speaker B
But only one returned.
38:02
Speaker B
The other nine didn't.
38:04
Speaker B
The one returned to give glory and thanks to God.
38:07
Speaker B
Don't be like the nine.
38:09
Speaker B
When God does a miracle in your life, be the one who gives him thanks and glory.
38:15
Speaker B
And make it public.
38:17
Speaker B
Make it known what God has done.
38:19
Speaker B
And can I just say along the lines of praying for a miracle.
38:23
Speaker B
That the greatest miracle that God could possibly give you and do for you.
38:28
Speaker B
Is the miracle of salvation.
38:31
Speaker B
That if you know Christ as your Lord and Savior.
38:34
Speaker B
If you've accepted Jesus, that transforming work that God does in your heart and life.
38:42
Speaker B
To change you from who you were to who you are in him.
38:46
Speaker B
Growing even ever more.
38:48
Speaker B
That's the greatest miracle ever.
38:51
Speaker B
So for some of you who think, I've never really gotten a miracle from Jesus.
38:55
Speaker B
How about your salvation?
38:56
Speaker B
Like start there.
38:58
Speaker B
Because the transforming powerful work of God to save us from sin and death by offering his son Jesus on a cross.
39:07
Speaker B
Is the most incredible miracle ever given.
39:12
Speaker B
So we're all beneficiaries of the miraculous hand of God.
39:17
Speaker B
But it's important to understand that when God does what he does.
39:21
Speaker B
Our salvation or some specific thing in answer to prayer.
39:26
Speaker B
God, I need this miracle for this thing or that thing.
39:30
Speaker B
Make sure you give him the glory.
39:33
Speaker B
And let me tell you what happens when you give him the glory.
39:36
Speaker B
When you're vocal about it, when you let your testimony known.
39:40
Speaker B
It will cause other people to give glory to God.
39:42
Speaker B
Because that's the way this story ends.
39:45
Speaker B
At the end of verse 43, and all the people when they saw it.
39:48
Speaker B
Gave praise to God.
39:51
Speaker B
Your testimony of God's miraculous touch in your life.
39:55
Speaker B
Will help people to see the Lord.
39:57
Speaker B
And they'll give praise to him too.
40:01
Speaker B
Now.
40:03
Speaker B
Let me bring this home and help us to understand this story.
40:07
Speaker B
And in today's application.
40:11
Speaker B
Here you have this story of Jesus passing through Jericho on his way to Jerusalem.
40:17
Speaker B
You have this guy, very desperate, blind.
40:20
Speaker B
Sitting at the side of the road begging.
40:24
Speaker B
And he asks in all the commotion, what's going on?
40:28
Speaker B
And they say, Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.
40:32
Speaker B
I want you to think for a moment.
40:36
Speaker B
If Jesus right now were passing by you.
40:42
Speaker B
What would be the one cry of your heart that you would ask him for a miracle for?
40:48
Speaker B
What's the one thing right now?
40:52
Speaker B
That you're desperate for God to miraculously meet.
40:57
Speaker B
Now for some of you, just instantly, something immediately came to your mind.
41:03
Speaker B
I don't want Jesus to pass us by today.
41:06
Speaker B
I want us to cry out to him.
41:10
Speaker B
He's still a miracle working God.
41:13
Speaker B
The Bible says he's the same yesterday, today and forever.
41:16
Speaker B
And the Bible also says in James, we have not because we ask not.
41:21
Speaker B
So we need to ask him.
41:23
Speaker B
And we need to be specific.
41:25
Speaker B
And then we need to trust him.
41:28
Speaker B
But he still wants us to ask.
41:31
Speaker B
Because wouldn't it be wonderful if God miraculously touched whatever the need was in your life.
41:35
Speaker B
The way you so desperately need.
41:37
Speaker B
So ask.
41:42
Speaker B
In 1868, one of the most prolific hymn writers.
41:47
Speaker B
By the name of Fanny Crosby.
41:51
Speaker B
Wrote an old hymn of our faith that was called.
41:57
Speaker B
Pass me not, oh gentle Savior.
42:02
Speaker B
And it was a song, a hymn, written about this very story that we're studying today from Luke 18.
42:11
Speaker B
And here's what Fanny Crosby wrote in that hymn.
42:17
Speaker B
Pass me not, oh gentle Savior.
42:22
Speaker B
Hear my humble cry.
42:26
Speaker B
While on others thou art calling, do not pass me by.
42:34
Speaker B
Let me at thy throne of mercy find a sweet relief.
42:40
Speaker B
Kneeling there in deep contrition, help my unbelief.
42:47
Speaker B
Trusting only in thy merit.
42:51
Speaker B
Would I seek thy face.
42:55
Speaker B
Heal my wounded, broken spirit.

43:05
Speaker B
Savior, Savior.

Speaker B
Hear my humble cry.
43:13
Speaker B
While on others thou art calling, do not pass me by.

Fanny Crosby was herself blind.
43:26
Speaker B
When she wrote that song.
43:30
Speaker B
She understood a desperate condition.
43:35
Speaker B
God understands yours too.
43:39
Speaker B
Why don't we ask him today?
43:43
Speaker B
Not to pass us by.
43:47
Speaker B
Why don't we cry out for the miracle that we need?
43:51
Speaker B
Would you do that with me?
43:52
Speaker B
And then we'll have communion together.
43:54
Speaker B
Would you just bow your heads?
44:00
Speaker B
I'm going to pray a prayer and I'm going to lead you in.
44:03
Speaker B
And if you want to just join me in this because there's a miracle that you need in your life.

Just you can just whisper it where you're seated.
44:16

Come on, let's just join our hearts together and pray to the Lord.
44:18
Speaker B
Just say, Lord Jesus.

I'm in desperate need.
44:29
Speaker B
You know what the need is.
44:35
Speaker B
You are acquainted with my life.
44:40
Speaker B
You know when I rise, when I sit.
44:46
Speaker B
You know when I come and go.
44:51
Speaker B
You know everything about me.
44:57
Speaker B
And so I appeal to you as a merciful God.

Speaker B
And I ask you in Jesus' name for a miracle today.

You know my need.
45:18

And I pray right now for this need.
