Pretty much the perfect Champions League night for the boys in red. Now, the first thing that I want to focus on today is the shape that Manchester United used in this game, which is a 00:13 Speaker A little bit out of character. As a rule, I like to suggest that the shape isn't actually too important and that the roles and the ideas within the shape hold more importance. But today, I was genuinely intrigued by the way that 00:26 Speaker A Manchester United approached the game. And of course, we've got a slightly different lineup to what we normally see. Patrick Dorgu at left back back for the first time in a Manchester United shirt. And of course, we did play 00:35 Speaker A against a weaker opposition, where we knew that we were going to have a lot of the ball. And what we saw was United using a very fixed shape, a bit more of a rigid shape at times, which in a way 00:46 Speaker A allowed more freedom for some of the players. You know, in the opening weeks of the season, we've seen, for example, Mateus Cunha up front, Marcus Rashford on the left. We've seen a lot of players that want to sort of drift and roam away 00:57 Speaker A from their position. Whereas in this match, it felt a little bit more like United had structure, a bit more of a focal point, and I think that provided us with the platform to perform. Don't get me wrong, Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw have played very well down the left-hand 04:59 Speaker A side. Our right side has struggled a little bit more, but again, the positioning felt a bit more fixed. I wouldn't say that Doucouré and Kouyaté weren't necessarily rotating that much. 05:08 Speaker A We've spoken in the first few weeks regularly about two versus two situations. We didn't see quite as much as that from these two. Doucouré was very much the wide left player despite starting the game at left back. On the 05:19 Speaker A right-hand side, uh it was a bit more bit more freedom with the movement. Mazraoui and Mbeumo would often rotate between the two positions with Mazraoui actually playing quite centrally. But again, what we get now is a pinning effect and that effect is is something 05:32 Speaker A that we see with the opposition's back line. Because for the opposition, there there's so many different problems for them to to try and think about, for them to try and solve. Because if you just look across the front line real quick, 05:43 Speaker A you've got Bryan Mbeumo wide on the right-hand side who we know is a threat. 05:47 Speaker A And in this game he was very much providing the width for Manchester United down the right-hand side. And you've got Patrick Dorgu doing the same down the left. So, for the opposition, what that means is they're constantly worried about jumping into the wide 05:58 Speaker A zone. So, they want to be compact, they want to be close together, but the second that we have that ball out wide, the opposition have got to jump. And we have that on both sides of the pitch. 06:07 Speaker A Then we've got Benjamin Sesko through the middle, and he does a great job of constantly going in behind. He's always playing on the shoulder, he wants to stretch the defense. He's not so worried about having loads of touches. He's 06:17 Speaker A going in behind into these positions here. So again, that pins the opposition. The center-backs are aware of that run from Benjamin Sesko, so they have to just drop off a little bit. Now, we see more freedom for those in the 06:28 Speaker A middle, because if we've got the width, if we 06:39 Speaker A about 2 hours before kick-off for this game discussing why I think the midfield is a lot better than what people are giving it credit uh given credit for. 06:46 Speaker A And I recommend that you go and check out that video, because a lot of what we discussed was evident in this game. You know, Tielemans is so punchy with his passing. He he If he doesn't need two touches or three touches to get the pass 06:57 Speaker A off, he doesn't take it. If he sees the moment to play quick, he's going to play quick. And when you've got the opposition so pinned, so stretched, having that ability to move the ball quickly is so so effective. Then you've 07:07 Speaker A got Kobbie in the middle who is just a nightmare to play against. Everything he does it just oozes class, it oozes quality. And he has to be a nightmare to to play against for the opposition, because he constantly thinks he 07:19 Speaker A constantly makes you think, sorry, that you can get him. He constantly makes you think I've got a chance of going and getting that ball, and he draws these midfielders towards him, and then just at the last second he manipulates it 07:30 Speaker A away, often using the ball roll, and then that little outside of the right foot pass to a teammate. And because United are stretching, because they're pinning, we find these half spaces a little bit more frequently, and Kobbie with sort of the roll, the ball roll 07:42 Speaker A away from goal, and then the outside of the right foot pass back in towards goal. It just pulls the opposition about so much. And I felt that this dynamic really worked for United. Of course, weaker opposition, we we have to always 07:54 Speaker A remember that. But pinning the opposition so effectively, and allowing the players in the middle to now express themselves. 08:01 Speaker A Now, the next thing that we need to focus on is the wide zones for Manchester United, because this is something that we have been speaking about all season so far. The way that United operate in the wide positions. 08:11 Speaker A And I think in this game we often found a real nice balance between what we were doing on both sides of the pitch. And both sides, of course, operated a little bit differently. We've seen it already down the left. Mateus Cunha was allowed 08:22 Speaker A to float inside the pitch, was basically playing as an extra midfielder half the time, whilst Patrick Dorgu was providing the width down the left. That's what he did for most of the game. Of course, we see it for the goal. Dorgu is wide on 08:33 Speaker A the left-hand side, he puts the ball in, and Mateus Cunha has floated centrally, and he gets the goal. So, that idea is very evident there. Down the right-hand side, though, with Bryan Mbeumo and Mazraoui, it's a little bit different 08:45 Speaker A the way that this worked, and I really enjoyed it. You see, I think United knew that they were confident and comfortable in this game. We knew that we were playing weaker opposition, and as a result, we felt that we could throw the 08:55 Speaker A extra player further forward. So, yes, Mazraoui may start the phase sort of building possession in the back three, but he's certainly going to be given that license to venture further forward as well. And we saw a very attacking 09:05 Speaker A United side. Moments where we've got the two center-backs are playing with each other, Varane and Lisandro Martinez, who both had good games, and then Tielemans and Kobbie playing together. And then everyone else is allowed to go forward. 09:17 Speaker A And I loved the way that Mazraoui would sort of arrive into these positions here. Now, you can question whether or not Mazraoui is the best attacking full-back you're ever going to see, but in terms of working a bit of tactical 09:28 Speaker A space, this was something that United did really well. Because again, the opposition are so aware of the fact that we are wide, so you just open up these gaps inside. And there were countless occasions, we will probably go through 09:38 Speaker A it over the next few days to be honest because it it is worth covering in more depth. Hopefully with more examples that I can show you. Uh but the amount of times Mazraoui just ghosted in from the far side. So United might be building 09:50 Speaker A down the left-hand side like we do. You know, you got Kobbie and Kouyna close together with Doucoure holding the width. These guys combine, they come close, Bruno Fernandes moves towards the ball. And what you see, if we just clear 10:00 Speaker A this real quick, what you see is just these gaps opening up on the far side of the opposition's midfield. And today it was Mazraoui that was frequently going into those zones. And I think he did a really nice job considering it isn't his 10:11 Speaker A best role. And of course we've got the central midfielders that can constantly find him with the ball. Mazraoui could sneak into these positions so well. And when you do that again the opposition collapse and now we can free Bryan and 10:21 Speaker A Mbeumo. And there were so many situations where we were combining down the right-hand side with some sort of two versus two or even a third man combination. So Mbeumo might have the ball, Mazraoui runs past, he takes the 10:32 Speaker A center-back with him and now Bruno Fernandes can come into the space. I really enjoyed how this worked. Do I think individually we can still do a little bit better? Yes, I think Mbeumo and Mazraoui can both produce more 10:43 Speaker A quality with the final action. Uh but in terms of the threat, in terms of the idea, the way that it played out, I really like the tactical plan. It was nice to see something a little bit different. Dalot sometimes picks up 10:54 Speaker A these positions but we don't normally see it quite as frequently as what we did in this game and I really enjoyed it. 11:01 Speaker A The other thing that I really enjoyed about this performance was Benjamin Sesko up front getting his first start of the season. We called for it just a couple of days ago saying that Benjamin Sesko can transform the Manchester 11:11 Speaker A United attack. The concern was would we lose something in midfield? Uh but I think the way that we played suggested that we don't when Benjamin Sesko was on the pitch because we've got enough other players that can do stuff. And you know, 11:23 Speaker A I do think Kouyna and Bruno Fernandes are big parts of that to tell the truth. 11:27 Speaker A Uh but Benjamin Sesko is also incredibly important because what you get is a striker. You get a focal point. You get someone who goes and plays in between the center backs, often sort of drawing the attention of not just one but two. 11:37 Speaker A He's occupying both defenders. And if we've got one player drawing the attention of two players, it means the rest of the team physically cannot go man-to-man with us. And I just think in every goal last night, you see the 11:48 Speaker A effect of Benjamin Šeško existing. You know, he doesn't necessarily get goals, he doesn't get assists, but his presence on the pitch playing as a striker. We've commented a few times already this season that at times when we move 12:00 Speaker A quickly, we don't get enough of a presence in the middle. But Benjamin Šeško, because of his sharpness, because of his his movement, but also his his threat, his reputation, it's almost like having two players in the middle, but 12:11 Speaker A actually you've only got one. And that's very, very threatening. But I think he played a huge part in all of the goals. 12:16 Speaker A You've got the first goal here, you can see that first of all, both of the center backs look at Benjamin Šeško. 12:21 Speaker A That's the reason why Matías Cunha is able to sneak into the space. So, statistically, Šeško gets absolutely nothing for that, but he literally took the attention of the center backs, allowing Cunha to drift in. For the second goal, he does something very 12:33 Speaker A similar. Again, we can see Benjamin Šeško. The first center back looks at Šeško, and that gives Tielemans the room to receive the ball. And then the other center back pulls towards Šeško at the far post, which is why Bruno Fernandes 12:44 Speaker A gets the the space near the penalty spot. And then of course for the third goal, it's Benjamin Šeško stretching in behind the defense. And I just felt that he tormented those center backs without even touching the ball half the time. 12:55 Speaker A And and that's a sign of a really dangerous striker. Someone who doesn't need those touches to to link the play and work with his teammates. For example, like Zerxi does. By the way, I think Zerxi was fantastic when he came 13:05 Speaker A on. Really, really enjoyed his cameo. Seems to have that bit between his teeth, which is great to see. Uh but for Šeško, I love how effective he can be without touching the ball. That's a presence that you need in the box. Now, 13:15 Speaker A the profile isn't going to be perfect for every match. We understand that. We might need something different for City this weekend. But in games where we are dominating, we are knocking on the door and trying to break a team down, I just 13:26 Speaker A think Benjamin Šeško is essential. Obviously, on top of all of that, we were able to rest some players, we were able to rotate some players, we got Lacey and Harry Amass both on the pitch as well. It was just pretty much a 13:38 Speaker A perfect night for Manchester United. Of course, the second half was a little bit dull at times, game game state comes into play. You're three nil up, you don't have that same intensity, you don't have that same desire to to go and 13:49 Speaker A put a team to bed. I would like to see us try and bring that back to our game a little bit. I don't feel that we kill teams in the way that we could. I'd love to see us being more ruthless. But after 13:58 Speaker A a little bit of a tricky start to the season, after some fatigue for some of these players, after a busy summer, it was a really nice time just to get a quite straightforward four nil win, get the job done, get three points, start 14:08 Speaker A the Champions League season well, and hopefully sort of build this platform for us to now build upon.
