Have you ever heard the saying, "The cobbler's children have no shoes"? Well, I'm a woodworker, and my son doesn't have a desk. So today, I'm going to build one for him so he doesn't have to do his homework on the floor anymore. Let's start with the design. I was inspired by this marble desk from CB2. It's a very clean and simple design with some open shelves. So based off that, I drew up something a little more functional and manly that would match his room better.

In SketchUp, I played around with a few variations until I landed on one that both me and my son liked. The left side has open shelves like the marble desk. Then I added another shelf under the top that will create more storage, and I put a row of drawers on the right-hand side. The drawers are supported by these small little standoffs that mimic the long leg on the left side. It's clean, simple, and modern, just like he wanted. So I got to work.

The bed I built for him was a gray-stained ash with walnut accents, so this desk will be the opposite. It will be mostly made of walnut with some gray ash mixed in. So I had to glue up a total of 10 panels for this project. I did it all in one night, which is crazy because I don't have enough clamps to glue up 10 panels in one night. I had to be very efficient with how I worked. Like, while I had one panel in clamps, I would glue some dominoes in on some of the other boards. I also like to clean up as much of the glue squeeze-out as possible while the glue is still sort of wet. So about 15 minutes after tightening the last clamp, I scrape away the squeeze-out and then wipe down the residual glue with a wet paper towel. This makes it so much easier to sand, in my opinion. And by the time I'm done doing all that, about 30 to 40 minutes have passed, which is long enough to take the panels out of clamps to clamp up another one. It was a super late night in the shop for me, and I repeated that process eight more times to get 10 of these panels. In case you are wondering, it was not easy. I was exhausted, and this was the state of my shop when I walked in the next day.

Like I mentioned, I try to get all the glue squeeze-out off, but sometimes I miss a spot or two, which is easy to clean up with a paint scraper. And I could work on getting all those panels to their final dimensions. When I did the initial milling process, I made each board slightly wider than I actually needed for the full-width panel, so after the glue-up, I could joint one edge and then bring all the panels to their final width at the table saw. This isn't really necessary. You could just glue up to the final size you need, but I find there are very slight inconsistencies in width after gluing up. Maybe it's due to clamp pressure or cumulative error in the milling process. I don't know. I just find I get better results this way.

The last step to get all these parts to size is to cut them all to length. So happy I built my portable MFT before this project so I can easily make these crosscuts on these long, wide panels. For the most part, I was following my SketchUp drawing to get all these dimensions, but after making a few cuts, I find it's more accurate to use parts that I already cut to get the dimensions for the next parts. Like for the open shelves, I laid the long middle shelf on top of the top, put a cutoff from the leg at the end, and measured the leftover distance to the end.

My material was 3/4 inch thick, which is equivalent to about 19 mm. Using the rule of thirds, I thought using 6 mm dominoes was the best choice, but 6 mm dominoes are 40 mm long. If I set the Domino to plunge 20 mm deep, which is what you would normally do when using 6x40s, I would go through the 3/4 inch material. So I was doing two different cut depths. I plunged 25 mm deep on the end grain and 15 mm deep on the face grain. So I kept messing up on the panels because I wasn't changing the depth from 25 to 15 between parts.
