A lot of people ask what I use to film my vlogs, so here’s a quick look at my filming equipment. The camera’s great, and keeping things minimal makes me actually want to film. I use the Blackmagic Camera app for better control (and it's free).

01:20

Speaker A

The MagSafe ring allows me to place my phone for those lower angle shots. This is how I usually film my meals. A sturdy tripod that doesn’t blow over in the wind is a must. It's easy to use, and you can twist the head in lots of different angles.

01:49

Speaker A

The magnetic grip is really good. The rod extends up to 167cm, which is great for all kinds of shots. The remote is rechargeable, so you don't have to worry about batteries. So this is my simple setup! I'll link the tripod in my description.

Labuan Bajo is a small port town east of Bali. It's the gateway to the Komodo National Park. Goodbye, Perth! I think I can see my apartment block from here. It’s a bumpy descent into Bali. Let's head to the domestic terminal.

03:08

Speaker A

We're here for 5 hours. Had the most peppery bakso ever. What do you do when there's nothing to do?

03:22

Speaker A

Daydream... and look for snacks. This cream puff from Beard Papa's is pretty good. So many people are going to Labuan Bajo. The flight’s completely full. It's sunset by the time we're landing. Our hotel is walking distance from the airport.

04:20

Speaker A

We're staying here for one night as the boat tour starts early in the morning. It's nothing fancy, but it's clean and has everything we need. Good night!

04:37

Speaker A

We’re going on a 3-day, 2-night boat trip around the Komodo Islands. There are no hotels or land-based lodging on the islands, so a liveaboard is the best way to experience the area. There are going to be 10 other people on the boat.

05:06

Speaker A

Our driver picked us up at 8 a.m. to head to the harbour. We're staying on a Phinisi - a traditional Indonesian wooden sailing boat. But now they've been fitted with modern amenities for the tourists. The living room. We're staying on the top deck.

06:13

Speaker A

Home for the next 3 days. The bathroom is pretty basic. There's a large lounging area at the back and a grassy beanbag area for stargazing or sun lounging. It's a 2-hour sail to our first stop where we'll do some snorkelling.

06:55

Speaker A

The Komodo National Park is made up of 29 islands. We'll just be visiting around 8-9 islands on this trip. Playing Big 2, which is one of my favourite card games. It's a bit lonely with just us two, though... maybe we should have asked the other couple to join us.

07:20

Speaker A

It's snorkelling time! The water is so clear and blue. It doesn’t look like there’s much from up here, though...

07:38

Speaker A

But when you dive below... snorkelling here is just incredible. It's a whole different world underneath us. Our guide also took lots of photos and videos of us on his GoPro. What a spread! The food on board is surprisingly good.

09:21

Speaker A

We're going to that white sandy beach next. The island is so flat. But look at the water...

09:50

Speaker A

So this is what crystal-clear means. This place is picture-perfect. It's time to head back. :( We are definitely fed well here. Our last stop of the day is the iconic Padar Island. It was a photo here that sparked my interest in visiting the Komodo Islands.

11:34

Speaker A

From the dock, it takes about 30 minutes to reach the top where you'll get to see three different-colored beaches all at once. I see the white beach first. The path is relatively easy. Pink beach spotted and black beach.

12:30

Speaker A

The view at golden hour is pure magic. As the sun sets on one side, the moon appears on the other. It's a moonlit journey back home. Dinner did not disappoint. It's so peaceful in the morning. I slept so well last night.

14:09

Speaker A

Maybe because of the gentle rocking of the boat. Today's agenda: Komodo dragons, Pink beach, and fruit bats migration!

14:28

Speaker A

Our first stop is Komodo Island. It's a small fishing village. The mosque is the most eye-catching building of the village. This is where we will hopefully see some wild Komodo dragons. Komodo dragons are the largest lizards on Earth; they can grow up to 3m long.

15:12

Speaker A

Spot our first sighting! Wow, they are big (and wrinkly). There's another one hidden behind the bushes. There's another one hidden behind the bushes. They camouflage well. Their bites are venomous and have proteins to prevent blood clotting. The rangers have sticks just in case they get too close.

16:17

Speaker A

Komodo dragons are territorial and tend to live alone. So they will fight if they encounter one another, and it was over in a few seconds. I wonder how long they are going to stay like that. That was cool that we caught a fight.

17:10

Speaker A

Breakfast feels like a reward after the hike. There's an acai bowl for everyone and pancakes. 🥞 We're cruising to our next location. Let's do some snorkelling and paddle boarding here. This is my first time on a beach that's pink; the blush hues are so pretty.

18:12

Speaker A

Our guide is flying a drone. The shots are so cool. True pink sand beaches are rare. Apparently, there are only 15 in the world as it requires specific conditions to form. So I guess today is not just a normal beach day!

18:46

Speaker A

A wild boar spotted... The rest of the day we spent chilling on the boat and eating. Lunch today was the best meal yet, and then around 4 p.m. we were served snack time again. Pretty large portion for a snack.

19:45

Speaker A

We're docked next to Kalong Island for sunset. Around sunset to dusk, thousands of fruit bats will take flight at Kalong Island. They leave the mangroves of Kalong Island to search for food at night. Those thick trees surrounding the islands are mangroves.

20:21

Speaker A

It's sunset time, but no signs of bats yet. As with nature, the timing is always unpredictable. The crew are starting to prepare our BBQ dinner. The fishes were caught yesterday. It's getting dark but still no bats. By the time they came out, it was too dark for my camera to capture.

21:34

Speaker A

Filming under low light is the only thing I don't like about the iPhone. BBQ dinner is served. I'm still quite full from snack time, to be honest. The island is small but very busy. We'll be hiking up that hill this morning.

22:16

Speaker A

You can snorkel with baby sharks in the shallow waters here. You can even spot the sharks from above. We went in and saw at least a dozen baby sharks. The island is small but very busy. There's a queue to hike up the viewpoint too.

23:17

Speaker A

The path is slippery and not easy. But the view from above is beautiful. Heading down is a problem though...

23:51

Speaker A

Our trip is coming to an end, but not without one last meal on board. I hope you've enjoyed this trip to the Komodo Islands with me. See you in the next one!
