# Export a transcript: TXT, PDF, SRT, VTT, JSON

Take the text out of SozAI as a document, subtitles or data. This page lists which format each app offers and what ends up inside the file.

## The short answer

In the SozAI app for iPhone, Android, iPad and Mac you can export a transcript as PDF, TXT, SRT, VTT or JSON, or copy the text. On web.sozai.app you can download TXT (with or without timecodes and speaker names), SRT and VTT, copy all the text, or download several recordings as one TXT from the library. There is no DOCX, Word or Markdown export in any SozAI app, and no PDF or JSON on the web. Quizzes and flashcards are not exported from the apps; for Moodle, Anki or Quizlet files, use SozAI's free quiz and flashcard tools on the site.

## Formats and what is inside

The same transcript gives different files depending on where you export it. This is what each one contains today.

| Format | Phone app (iPhone, Android) | Mac and iPad app | Web | Timestamps | Speaker names |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| PDF | Yes | Yes | No | Yes | Yes (phone app) |
| TXT | Yes | Yes | Yes | App: no, plain text. Web: optional | App: "Name: text" lines once speakers have names. Web: optional |
| SRT | Yes | Yes | Yes, for the original text | Yes | No |
| VTT | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes (phone app); web: optional, as voice tags |
| JSON | Yes | Yes | No | Yes | Yes (phone app) |
| Copy text | Yes | Yes | Yes ("Copy all text") | As shown | As shown |
| Several recordings as one TXT | No | No | Yes, from the library | No | No |

SRT and VTT need a transcript with timings, so the app hides them for documents that have none. On the web, SRT is offered for the original text only: while a translation is shown, export VTT or TXT instead. A TXT from the app drops the speaker names when a translation is on screen.

## What the files look like

A TXT from the web with both options on starts with the recording's title, then one paragraph per fragment, with the time and the speaker in front:

`Weekly planning`

`[00:00] Anna: Let's start with the October numbers.`

`[01:12] Speaker B: I can send the report on Friday.`

Anna has a name because someone set it; the second voice has not been named yet, so it keeps its letter. In a recording longer than an hour the time gets hours as well, as in `[01:02:03]`. Turn off both options and you get the bare text, one paragraph per fragment.

The same lines in a VTT from the web become numbered cues with start and end times, and the name moves into a voice tag:

`00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:20.000`

`<v Speaker B>I can send the report on Friday.`

Players that understand voice tags can show the name; the others simply show the line.

## Which format to pick

**Subtitles for a video.** SRT is the subtitle file most video editors and video sites accept, and SozAI's carries only times and text. If you want the speaker's name on screen, use VTT, which keeps names as voice tags.

**A document to send or print.** PDF from the app keeps the timestamps and the speaker names together. On a Mac or iPad it also includes the summary when the recording has one.

**Editing in Word or Google Docs.** Export TXT and open it there. On the web, tick "With speaker names" and "With timecodes" first if you want them in the document. There is no DOCX file, but a TXT opens in any word processor.

**Your own scripts or analysis.** JSON from the app holds the transcript in segments with their times and speakers, which a script or a spreadsheet import can read.

**Quick quoting.** Copy the text and paste it where you need it.

## How to export on the web

1. Open the recording on web.sozai.app.
2. Press **Export**.
3. For a text file, set **With timecodes** and **With speaker names** the way you want them, then choose **Download text · TXT**.
4. For subtitles, choose **Subtitles · SRT** or **Subtitles · VTT**.
5. To paste the text somewhere, choose **Copy all text**. **Copy the notes** copies the AI notes instead.

To take out many transcripts at once, select them in the library and download their text as one TXT file. If you name the speakers before exporting, the names go into the file; [speaker identification](https://sozai.app/speaker-identification/) shows how.

## Quizzes and flashcards: export from the site tools

Inside the app and on web.sozai.app, quizzes and flashcards are for studying in SozAI; neither has an export button. When you need them in another system, the free tools on sozai.app produce the files:

- [Quiz generator](https://sozai.app/tools/quiz-generator/): a test of 5, 10 or 20 questions, downloaded as Moodle GIFT or CSV, or printed with a separate answer key.
- [AI flashcard generator](https://sozai.app/tools/flashcard-maker/): 10, 20 or 30 cards, exported as CSV for Anki or as a tab-separated TXT that Quizlet imports.
- [Flashcard maker](https://sozai.app/tools/flashcard-maker/): type or paste your own cards, then export or print them. Nothing leaves your browser.

The usual way in is to copy a transcript from SozAI and paste it into the generator. The two AI generators send the text you paste to an AI model to write the questions, so keep confidential material out of them. For studying inside the app instead, see [quizzes and flashcards](https://sozai.app/quizzes-and-flashcards/).

## When SozAI is not a fit

- You need a .docx file straight out of the app, with formatting. SozAI exports TXT, which Word opens, but no DOCX.
- You want Markdown for Notion or Obsidian. There is no Markdown export; paste the copied text instead.
- You need PDF or JSON from a computer browser. Those two come from the SozAI app only, not from the web.
- You want SRT subtitles that name the speakers. SRT never includes names; VTT does.
- You need to correct the words before exporting on a computer. Text editing is in the phone app; the web and the Mac and iPad app export the text as it is.

Exporting is free on every plan. The [web version](https://sozai.app/web-version/) covers recording and uploading in the browser, and [pricing](https://sozai.app/pricing/) lists the free 30 minutes and Premium.

Answers

## Frequently asked questions

Can I export a SozAI transcript to Word?

Not as a .docx file. Export TXT from the app or the web and open it in Word or Google Docs; on the web you can include timecodes and speaker names in that TXT first. For a fixed, printable layout, the app's PDF export is the closer match.

Does SozAI export SRT subtitles?

Yes. Every SozAI app and the web export SRT, with timings and text. SRT has no speaker names; if you need them, export VTT. On the web, SRT is available for the original text, not while a translation is shown.

What is the difference between SRT and VTT in SozAI?

Both are subtitle files with timings. SozAI's SRT holds only times and text, while its VTT can also carry speaker names as voice tags. Most video tools take SRT; pick VTT when the web player or editor you use reads it and you want names.

Can I export a transcript as PDF on the web?

No. The web version downloads TXT, SRT and VTT and copies text. PDF and JSON come from the SozAI app on a phone, an iPad or a Mac. It uses the same account, so a recording made on the web is already there.

Can I export quizzes or flashcards to Moodle, Anki or Quizlet?

Not from the app. The free quiz generator on sozai.app exports Moodle GIFT and CSV and prints a test with its answer key, and the flashcard generator exports CSV for Anki and a tab-separated TXT for Quizlet. Paste the transcript into the tool to get them.

How do I export many transcripts at once?

Use the library on web.sozai.app. Select the recordings you want and download their text as one TXT file. The apps export one recording at a time.

Is exporting part of the free plan?

Yes. Every format is available on the free plan, which includes 30 minutes of transcription once per account. Premium adds transcription time, not export features.

Turn your next recording into text

Record, upload a file or paste a link. You get the transcript, speakers and a summary back.
