## The short answer

Google Meet makes a transcript only on paid Google Workspace editions: Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Starter, Standard and Plus, Education Plus, the Teaching and Learning Upgrade and Workspace Individual. It works in eight languages, someone has to start it from a computer or the Android app, and the result is a Google Doc in the organizer’s Drive, in the “Google Meet” folder, linked from the Calendar event. A free Gmail account gets no transcript, and neither does any Google One plan, including the ones that can record. If you have a recording but no transcript, download it from the organizer’s Drive and transcribe it with SozAI in any of 99 languages, with speaker labels. For the next call, the SozAI web version can record the Meet tab in Chrome or Edge.

## Does Google Meet transcribe meetings? What you get on each plan

A transcript is a Google Doc of what was said, a recording is a video in Drive, and “Take notes for me” is a summary written by Gemini. Each has its own list of plans, and a plan that records may still have no transcript.

| Plan | Record the meeting | Transcript (Google Doc) | Gemini “Take notes for me” |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Free personal Google account | No | No | No |
| Google One Premium, 2 TB or more | Yes | No | No |
| Google AI Pro or AI Ultra (personal) | Yes | No | Yes |
| Workspace Business Starter | No | No | No |
| Business Standard, Business Plus | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Enterprise Starter | Yes | Yes | No |
| Essentials, Enterprise Essentials | Yes | No | No |
| Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Workspace Individual | Yes | Yes | No |
| Education Fundamentals, Education Standard | No | No | No |
| Teaching and Learning Upgrade | Yes, for license holders | Yes | No |
| Education Plus | Yes; the recording page says staff license in one place, students too in another | Yes, but off by default for student licenses | Only with the Google AI Pro for Education add-on |

On a work or school account the admin has the last word. Recording has to be turned on for your account, and transcripts, which are on by default, can be switched off for the whole organization or one department.

| Question | What Google’s help pages say |
| --- | --- |
| Live captions or a transcript | Live captions are free on every account, in 88 language variants (most marked beta), and only the person who turned them on sees them. They are not saved, unless whoever records picks “Record captions”, which adds them to the video. The transcript is the saved document. |
| Transcript languages | English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish |
| Who can start it | With “Host management” on, only the host and co-hosts. With it off, anyone from the host’s organization. An admin can require every participant to consent first (off by default). |
| Admin switch | Admin console, Google Meet, Meet video settings, “Meeting transcripts”. The admin page says Business Standard can’t turn it off. |
| Devices | A computer or the Meet app on Android. The page lists no iPhone or iPad. |
| What is in it | Spoken words only, no chat. The admin page says it shows who said what and lists the attendees. |
| Where it is saved | The organizer’s Drive, folder “Google Meet”, one subfolder per meeting. Older files moved to “Legacy Meet Recordings” (July 2026 on the transcript page, September 2026 on the notes page; the admin page still says “Meet Recordings”). |
| Who can open it | An email with the link goes to the host and co-hosts, and to whoever started it. It is attached to the Calendar event for invitees in the host’s organization; with more than 200 invitees, only the hosts and the person who started it get it. |
| How long it is kept | No expiry on the help pages. It is a Drive file, so your organization’s Drive or Vault retention rules decide. |
| Format and timing | A Google Doc, usually ready within a few hours, sometimes up to 24. It can’t be paused; each restart makes a separate file. |

Checked against Google’s help pages on 31 October 2026: [Use Transcripts with Google Meet](https://support.google.com/meet/answer/12849897?hl=en), [Premium Meet features by edition](https://support.google.com/meet/answer/10459644?hl=en), [Record a video meeting](https://support.google.com/meet/answer/9308681?hl=en) and [Turn meeting transcription on or off](https://support.google.com/a/answer/12076932?hl=en) (for admins). Where they disagree we say so; the admin page, for one, lists fewer editions than the other two.

## How to get the built-in transcript

1. Join from a computer, or the Meet app on Android, with an account whose edition has transcripts.
2. At the bottom right, click Meeting tools > Transcribe > Start transcription, then confirm with Start. A Transcripts icon appears for everyone in the call.
3. To have it start on its own, when you create the meeting go to Video call options > Meeting records and select “Transcribe the meeting”. It waits until the host or a co-host joins on the web.
4. To stop, click Meeting tools > Transcribing > Stop transcription. It also stops when everyone leaves.
5. Afterwards, open the link in the email, the attachment in the Calendar event, or the meeting’s subfolder under “Google Meet” in the organizer’s Drive.

Google’s [transcripts article](https://support.google.com/meet/answer/12849897?hl=en) has the long version, including the Android menus.

## When there is no transcript, and what to do

### Your plan has no transcripts

Free accounts, Business Starter and every Google One plan lack them. Google One 2 TB and Google AI Pro can still record, so look for a video in the organizer’s Drive and upload it to SozAI. On a free account nothing was saved, so record the next call yourself, as described below.

### Nobody pressed Transcribe

Transcripts are switched on for the organization but don’t start by themselves in each meeting, unless the host set them to. If the meeting was recorded, the video is in the organizer’s Drive, and that file is all you need.

### You were a guest from another company

The Calendar attachment opens for invitees in the host’s organization. The admin page says all invitees get edit access when there are fewer than 200, which doesn’t match the user page. If the link asks you to request access, ask the organizer for the transcript or the recording.

### Your admin turned transcripts off

This is common in schools, where student licenses start with transcripts off. Ask for the recording, or record your side of the next call, with everyone’s agreement.

### The meeting wasn’t in one of the eight languages

A meeting in Russian or Arabic gets no Meet transcript, even if live captions covered it during the call. Upload the recording instead; SozAI detects the language by itself. It transcribes each file in one language, so if the meeting switched halfway, split the file at the switch.

### Everyone joined from an iPhone or iPad

Google lists only computers and Android for transcripts and recording. Someone on a laptop has to start it.

### The organizer’s Drive was full

Transcripts and recordings need free space in both the organizer’s Drive and the organization’s. Without it neither is saved, and only a recording made another way can help.

### Retention deleted it

Your organization’s retention rules can remove Meet files for good. A copy someone downloaded earlier isn’t touched by them, so ask around.

## Transcribe a Google Meet recording with SozAI

1. Find the video. It sits in the organizer’s Drive, in the “Google Meet” folder and that meeting’s subfolder; older ones are in “Legacy Meet Recordings”. Attendees get a shortcut in their own Drive. The email and the Calendar event link to it too. Select the file and choose More > Download.
2. Try a piece in the box at the top of this page. It transcribes the first 5 minutes of a file for free, with no account. It takes files up to about 30 MB on a computer (less on a phone) in MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG/OPUS, AAC, FLAC, WEBM and MP4. A Meet video is usually bigger, so use the box to check how your audio comes out.
3. For the whole meeting, open [web.sozai.app](https://web.sozai.app/) and press Upload, or use the SozAI app (iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac). Files can be up to 500 MB. A one-hour file is usually transcribed 1 to 2 minutes after it uploads.
4. Read and export. Each voice gets a label (Speaker A, Speaker B) with timestamps, and you can rename the labels in the phone app and on the web. Export PDF, TXT, SRT, VTT or JSON from the app, or TXT, SRT and VTT from the web ([what each file contains](https://sozai.app/transcript-export/)).

## Record the next Google Meet call without a bot

Meet runs in a browser, which makes this easier than with desktop meeting apps. Nothing joins the call and nothing asks for your calendar. The full guide is on [meeting notes without a bot](https://sozai.app/meeting-notes/without-a-bot/); here is how it applies to Meet.

In Chrome or Edge on a computer, Windows included, open [web.sozai.app](https://web.sozai.app/) in a second tab and go to Record. Under “Audio source”, pick “Both” to get you and the others, or “Tab audio” for the call alone. Press “Start recording”, choose the Meet tab and turn on “Also share tab audio”. When the meeting ends, press “Done — transcribe”. You get a transcript with speaker labels, then notes. One recording stops by itself after 3 hours. In Safari or Firefox only your microphone is recorded.

![SozAI web recorder with the audio source switch set to Microphone, Tab audio or Both, and the minutes left](https://sozai.app/wp-content/themes/sozai/assets/images/screens/en/web-recording-lecture.webp)

On a Mac you can also use the Meeting mode of [SozAI for Mac](https://sozai.app/download/macos/) (macOS 14 or later). It records the Mac’s sound, so it hears Meet in any browser, Safari included. The text is made on the Mac and doesn’t use your minutes, but it has no speaker labels and no automatic notes, so for Meet the web version usually serves better.

A phone can’t capture a Meet call held in the Meet app, so move the call to a computer.

When Meet records or transcribes, it shows everyone an icon or a notice. A recording made on your side shows nothing in the meeting, so tell people at the start, stop if someone objects, and follow the recording rules where you and they are. We don’t give legal advice.

## From transcript to minutes

A transcript is the raw material. After a recording is transcribed, SozAI writes meeting notes from it: a summary, the decisions, tasks with an owner when someone named one, and open questions. A draft follow-up email comes with them. Notes need a one-time consent to AI processing. For a class held on Meet, the same recording can become study notes in the app, then flashcards to review. Examples are on the [meeting notes page](https://sozai.app/meeting-notes/).

## Built-in or SozAI

| | Meet transcript | Gemini “Take notes for me” | SozAI |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Plans | The paid Workspace editions in the table above | Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Google AI Pro and Ultra, and a few others; the organizer needs it | Any meeting: 30 minutes free once, then Premium |
| Languages | 8 | The same 8, one per meeting | 99, detected automatically, one per file |
| Speaker names | Who said what, by name (admin page) | Not a transcript; a summary | Speaker A, B; you rename them |
| Rights needed | Host or co-host, or anyone in the host’s organization if the admin allows | Organizer, or anyone in the host’s organization (hosts only with host controls); admin and smart features must allow it | None in Meet; you still need people’s agreement |
| A recording made without a transcript | No option on the help pages to transcribe it later | Doesn’t apply | Upload the file, up to 500 MB |
| Output | Google Doc | Google Doc with Summary, Decisions, Next steps, Details | App: PDF, TXT, SRT, VTT, JSON. Web: TXT, SRT, VTT |
| Extra step | None, it lands in Drive | None | Download and upload, or press record yourself |
| Where it is kept | Your organization’s Drive, under its rules | The same | Your SozAI account, on our servers |

Our view: if your organization’s edition has transcripts and you meet in one of the eight languages, use Google’s transcript. It costs no extra step and it has real names. SozAI is the answer when the transcript was never made, the plan doesn’t have it, the meeting was in another language, or you weren’t the one who could press the button. Google describes Gemini notes, including who receives them, on its [“Take notes for me” page](https://support.google.com/meet/answer/14754931?hl=en).

Answers

## Frequently asked questions

Can Google Meet transcribe for free?

No. Meet transcripts need a paid Google Workspace edition, such as Business Standard or Workspace Individual; free Gmail accounts and Google One plans don’t get them. Live captions are free on every account, but they vanish when the call ends.

Where is my Google Meet transcript saved?

In the organizer’s Google Drive, in the “Google Meet” folder and a subfolder for that meeting; older transcripts are in “Legacy Meet Recordings”. The host and co-hosts get an email with the link, as does whoever started it, and the transcript is attached to the Calendar event.

Why can’t I find Transcribe in Google Meet?

Usually the organization’s edition doesn’t include it, the admin switched it off, or “Host management” limits it to hosts and co-hosts. People outside the host’s organization aren’t on Google’s list of who can start it. The help page also offers it only on a computer or an Android device.

Can I transcribe a Google Meet recording that has no transcript?

Yes. Download the video from the organizer’s Drive (More > Download) and upload it at web.sozai.app or in the SozAI app, up to 500 MB, for a transcript with speaker labels in any of 99 languages. The box on this page previews the first 5 minutes of smaller files for free.

Can I get a Google Meet transcript without recording the meeting?

Yes, on editions that have transcripts: Transcribe is a separate button from Record and saves only the text. On other plans live captions show text during the call but keep nothing, so you need a recording of some kind, for example a SozAI recording of the Meet tab in Chrome or Edge.

Which languages does Google Meet transcription support?

Eight: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. Gemini’s “Take notes for me” uses the same eight, one language per meeting. For a meeting in any other language, transcribe the recording with SozAI, which detects 99 languages.

Can I transcribe Google Meet on my phone?

On Android, yes, in the Meet app under More, then Tools, then Transcribe, if the edition has transcripts. Google’s page doesn’t offer it on iPhone or iPad. SozAI can’t record a Meet call from a phone either; use a computer for that.

Does SozAI join my Google Meet call?

No. Nothing enters the meeting and SozAI doesn’t ask for your calendar. You record on your side, from the Meet tab in Chrome or Edge or with the Mac app, so tell the other people yourself.

Is Gemini “Take notes for me” the same as a transcript?

No. It writes a summary in a Google Doc, with sections such as Summary, Decisions and Next steps, and the organizer needs an edition or Google AI plan that includes it. For a word-for-word record, use Meet’s Transcribe, or SozAI with a recording.

Turn your next recording into text

Record, upload a file or paste a link. You get the transcript, speakers and a summary back.
